Chapter 119: Massacre

Alanna quickly shouted, "Watch out, Waldo!"

Waldo was standing at the front and didn’t see the attack from behind. It wasn’t that he was distracted, but rather the black shadow launched a surprise attack from his blind spot.

Alanna and Helen saw it first but couldn’t intervene in time. They couldn’t reach Waldo in time.

However, Waldo reacted swiftly upon hearing the shout. Instead of turning back instinctively, he immediately rolled to the side to evade the potential danger. He knew the threat must be coming from behind or the side, as he could see that the front was clear.

Alanna and Helen drew their weapons and prepared to counterattack. They couldn’t clearly see what the black entity was, but they could see the direction it came from. It was a zombie, but something seemed different. This one seemed to be a mutated or infected survivor, retaining some combat instincts and even using a weapon.

Their shots were evaded by the infected zombie, and it moved agilely, no less than an ordinary survivor. It appeared that the survivor before being infected must have had a high level.

Suddenly, the infected zombie tossed a bomb towards Waldo. He was thrown back by the explosion but thankfully, wearing the battle suit, he was unharmed. Alanna and Helen were relieved they were not too close to the explosion.

Annoyed that he got ambushed by a zombie, Waldo shouted, "Find cover quickly! The zombie has a gun!" Alanna and Helen, wearing only bulletproof vests and helmets, couldn’t withstand bullets, so they needed to seek shelter.

Following his orders, they quickly ran into a nearby store and went upstairs to find a good position with cover to shoot from.

Waldo decided to act. The infected zombie was very agile, dodging almost all the bullets. Waldo’s heavy machine gun couldn’t keep up with its speed. This type of heavy machine gun was better suited for dealing with a zombie horde.

Relying on his agility, he drew his critical hit katana and swung it like a throwing knife, sending it flying towards the infected zombie. If the katana had a soul, it would probably want to give Waldo a friendly salute. Throwing a knife requires speed, accuracy, and ruthlessness, and Waldo didn’t excel in any of those aspects.

However, his luck was good. The katana lodged directly into the infected zombie’s arm, pinning it to the wall. The zombie let out a loud roar, expressing both pain and summoning its companions.

Soon, there were zombies responding from all around.

Roar!

Roar!

Waldo stomped on the head of the mutated zombie, crushing its brain, and then pulled out his critical hit katana. Seeing the approaching horde of zombies not far away, he brought out the Gatling machine gun again. This was the perfect moment for the Gatling machine gun to shine.

Zombies didn’t fear death, but survivors did. There were only a few survivors who could stand firm against the surging zombie horde. Only when facing the zombie horde with a Gatling machine gun in hand would one truly feel the impact of death.

Waldo could feel it, but he didn’t retreat.

Thump, thump!

This wave of zombies was more overwhelming than any before. Adrenaline surged through Waldo’s body. Even with the battle suit on, he felt his palms getting sweaty.

Dak, dak, dak!

The Gatling machine gun erupted in a burst of flames, firing at the incoming zombies. Waldo was breathing heavily but also feeling excited. This was definitely more thrilling than killing people, he thought.

Alanna and Helen were not idle. From the elevated platform, they took advantage of their high ground to relieve the pressure on Waldo. They shot, threw grenades, and tossed Molotov cocktails. They used the fact that zombies couldn’t threaten them to create a safe zone for Waldo’s output.

At Waldo’s feet, empty shell casings clattered to the ground. The Gatling machine gun barrel turned red. When the bullets ran out, Waldo switched to the AK47 and fired a volley of bullets.

Empty clips were discarded as if they cost nothing.

However, even with such intense firepower, they couldn’t stop the zombie horde. Soon, Waldo was overwhelmed by the zombies.

Alanna was startled and wanted to rush downstairs immediately. However, Helen held her back. "You have to trust Waldo; he won’t go down that easily!"

Before she could finish speaking, the zombies surrounding Waldo were blown up by a grenade. Waldo had used it at just the right moment, shooting at the zombies around him to create some space.

Helen provided support quickly. The zombies around Waldo were knocked down, clearing a circle for him. He took out an item from his backpack, giving a thumbs-up to Alanna and Helen before pulling out a portable rocket launcher.

Whoosh!

Waldo fired a rocket directly ahead. The leading zombie tried instinctively to intercept the rocket but was dragged backward by its powerful force. Then, a small mushroom cloud exploded.

A powerful shockwave knocked down a group of zombies and Waldo.

Waldo was astonished. He never expected this weapon to be so powerful. He thought it might be like those RPGs on TV, which could only blow up a small mound. But this compact rocket was much stronger!

A massive explosion rang out in the sky over the old city. Survivors several kilometers away could hear it.

"Damn, who used such a terrifying weapon? What level of bomb was that? My ears are ringing, and it sounds like it’s still far away."

"It must be from the southeast. Well, let’s not go over there. It might be Saturn or another big team."

"Could it be 10086?"

"Possible."

"Then we definitely shouldn’t go there!"

Every day, there were many survivors who came to hunt in the old city area. Most of them were cautious, fearing to disturb a large horde of zombies. When they heard such a loud noise, they knew that it was some top-level survivor team dealing with a large zombie horde. As for who it was, there were only a few possibilities.

After being knocked over by the shockwave, Waldo quickly stood up and pulled out his critical hit katana. He was full of energy and not affected by carrying the Gatling machine gun for a long time. Instead, his muscles were stimulated, and he felt a strong sense of fighting spirit. Killing zombies was effortless, and he had no psychological burden.

Waldo hacked faster and faster, as if he had lost all reason, transforming into a war machine that only knew slaughter and showed no signs of stopping. In an instant, he severed a zombie’s head, and the next moment, he had cut another zombie in half from top to bottom.

Alanna and Helen were encouraged and yelled fiercely while shooting these damn zombies. The three of them were resisting a horde of zombies on their own. In the eyes of other survivors, it was simply unbelievable and a fantasy. However, Waldo, Alanna, and Helen managed to do it. They wiped out a large zombie horde.

They didn’t get any supplies because it was an unexpected event. However, a massive amount of experience was accumulated by the three of them. They used up a lot of resources, even emptying both rocket launcher rounds. Nevertheless, it was worth it. During this process, Helen successfully reached level ten.

Normally, when one reaches level ten, they would receive a system notification to unlock their awakened ability. But this time, with the "Blessing of the Gods," Helen experienced something different.

"Congratulations, survivor! You have reached level ten and can now unlock your awakened ability!"

Then, Helen’s body started to emit a faint green light, which came from the "Blessing of the Gods." Without taking it out of her backpack, a pale green light enveloped Helen.

"Awakening ability in progress!"

At this point, Waldo had already reunited with Alanna and Helen. He took off his battle suit helmet, trying not to breathe heavily, afraid that it would affect Helen. Still, looking at Helen now with the ethereal green light surrounding her, it felt somewhat surreal.

"Ding! Awakening ability success! Congratulations, survivor!"

The green light gradually dissipated from Helen’s body as she slowly opened her eyes, her expression full of joy. Reaching level ten had significantly enhanced her physical functions. Her most direct experience was her previously slightly myopic vision being restored to a perfect state.

More importantly, she successfully awakened her ability. The smile on Helen’s face made Waldo and Alanna have some guesses but still not entirely sure. After all, even with the "Blessing of the Gods," it only increased the probability of awakening the ability and didn’t guarantee it.

To confirm, Waldo hurriedly asked, "Helen, did you awaken your ability? You look so happy!"

Alanna laughed on the side, saying, "You, Waldo, are even more nervous than Helen after she reached level ten!"

"You must have the luck of a goddess, Helen. I believe you must have awakened your ability, right?"

"You’re right on the money. I did successfully awaken my ability. I didn’t let the Blessing down," Helen said with a smile. She knew that the main purpose of this trip to the old city area was to level up. Reaching level ten and possibly acquiring an ability were vital for the team.

Although Helen didn’t say it aloud, she was very eager for this outcome. She had been quite anxious about it before.

No one could say for sure whether she would awaken her ability. If she had bad luck, all her anticipation would be in vain, and she felt guilty towards Waldo and Alanna. Moreover, Waldo’s fearless confrontation with the large zombie horde just now made Helen feel both distressed and remorseful.

Even after reaching level ten and entering the awakened ability phase, Helen was still nervous and worried. Fortunately, as Alanna had said, the goddess of luck was still on her side, and she successfully awakened her ability.

Helen then demonstrated her newfound ability.

[Beast Taming] - the ability to control animals.

The introduction was simple and straightforward without further elaboration.

"Is that it?" Waldo was somewhat puzzled. He understood the meaning of "Beast Taming" from the words themselves, but the problem was, what were the limitations of this ability? How many animals could she control? What was considered a "beast"?

Waldo frowned and asked, "Helen, how do you use this ability?"

Helen herself was also puzzled and didn’t fully understand the specific mechanism of [Beast Taming]. After pondering for a while, she said, "In my system introduction, I was taught how to use [Beast Taming], but there isn’t much information about the specific targets and limitations."

Then, Helen activated her ability. A faint green light emanated from her hands, forming a ring in front of her. It looked like those summoners in games. As long as Helen held a book in her hand and opened the ring, she would become a summoner.

Waldo thought carefully. Whether in games or movies, summoners were usually powerful characters. Helen awakening the [Beast Taming] ability must mean that it was quite impressive. Moreover, the less detailed the explanation, the higher the potential for development, just like Waldo’s [Stealth] ability, which had no description at all.

Waldo smiled and said, "It’s alright. We have time later to experiment and discover the scope and limitations of this ability."

Helen nodded in agreement. "Alright then, let’s go back! If we delay until night, the zombies might come out again, and we need some rest too."

"Yeah, we’ve been shooting all day, and my shoulders are sore. We should get a good sleep when we get back," Alanna said lazily while stretching.

Helen smiled and pinched Alanna’s cheek. "You’ve worked hard. Let’s go back now." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Waldo smiled and took out the armored vehicle. At that moment, he was secretly annoyed with himself for forgetting about the armored vehicle again. He could have just driven the vehicle into the zombie horde and continuously fired, saving a lot of effort. Having too many supplies could also be a trouble.
