Chapter 52: Separated
Xiaoqi was very happy to see this. ’Meeting the quota this time shouldn’t be a problem.’
"Sister Qi, can I ask you a question?"
At this moment, Cloud Fish, with nothing better to do, asked out of curiosity.
"What is it?"
Xiaoqi looked at Cloud Fish in confusion.
"Are you interested in Long Ming?"
Cloud Fish followed up with a startling question.
Hearing this, He Zhong and Tang Ye both turned to look at Xiaoqi.
"Don’t be ridiculous."
Xiaoqi’s expression stiffened, and she replied irritably.
"Then why do you look out for him so much? And even took the initiative to have him join your team?"
"He’s my guest, so I’m just looking after him."
"Really?"
Cloud Fish wasn’t entirely convinced by Xiaoqi’s explanation.
Xiaoqi tapped Cloud Fish on the head.
"Don’t overthink things."
"Oh, okay."
Cloud Fish clutched her head.
Just then, a barrage of gunfire erupted from outside the hospital.
Startled, Xiaoqi and the others all turned to look outside.
"What’s happening?"
"No idea!"
...
The group began to murmur uneasily.
A combatant rushed over, shouting.
"Fall back! A horde of Corpse Monsters is closing in!"
"Everyone, notify your team members to stop their search and pull back immediately!"
The color drained from Xiaoqi’s face as she immediately commanded her team members.
"Yes!"
Alarmed, everyone sent people to notify their comrades.
Cloud Fish looked at Xiaoqi and said urgently.
"Sister Qi, Long Ming isn’t back yet."
"He Zhong, you go get him."
Xiaoqi immediately instructed He Zhong.
Hearing Xiaoqi, He Zhong immediately sprinted toward Inpatient Building 5, shouting at the top of his lungs.
"Long Ming, stop searching! The monsters are here! Fall back!"
Just then, Mira rushed over to Xiaoqi with her people.
"Xiaoqi, gather all your personnel and retreat with us. Now."
"Huh? We have to leave right now? Some of our people haven’t regrouped yet."
"There’s no time! The horde of Corpse Monsters is already here!"
"Understood! Everyone, fall back with the combat team!"
Xiaoqi then shouted through gritted teeth.
...
Meanwhile, in a stairwell of Building 5, Long Ming was relentlessly kicking a rusty iron door.
BANG!
The loud noise echoed relentlessly.
Long Ming stepped back, panting as he stared at the dented iron door, growing annoyed.
’All I needed was one look from the rooftop,’ he thought. ’But of course, the iron door is locked, and I can’t kick it open no matter how hard I try. And I don’t even have any tools.’
Just then, he thought he vaguely heard shouting and paused.
A moment later, the shouts of Johnny and his men echoed up the stairwell.
"Long Ming, fall back! The monsters are here!"
Hearing this, Long Ming didn’t retreat. Instead, he lifted his foot and resumed kicking the iron door relentlessly.
He trusted his gut. ’There has to be something on the roof, and it has to be good.’
CRACK!
The iron door burst open.
Elated, Long Ming immediately rushed onto the right side of the rooftop.
He immediately spotted a small, sharp-tipped metal supply pod embedded in the ground.
It was clear that because of the fog, no one else had noticed the airdrop land here.
But compared to the last one, this airdrop was tiny.
Long Ming scanned his surroundings. After confirming it was safe, he walked over and opened the supply pod.
CLICK!
The supply pod bloomed open like a flower bud, revealing an exquisite metal box.
Long Ming immediately picked it up. ’An invitation, an invitation...’ he prayed silently as he opened the box.
A single, cyan-colored injector came into view.
Long Ming was a bit surprised as he looked at the cyan injector. A notification popped up on his wristband.
Swiftness Injector
Effect: Drastically increases agility for one hour.
Long Ming glanced at the notification on his wristband, feeling a little disappointed.
’I was hoping for an invitation, or at least a Genetic Potion. But all I got was a Swiftness Injector.’
But Long Ming didn’t dwell on it. He simply used his wristband to scan it into his lockbox.
Just then, a barrage of gunfire erupted from below.
BANG! BANG!
Startled, Long Ming ran to the edge of the roof and looked down.
He saw a black mass of Corpse Monsters swarming into the hospital, while Mira led her people in a retreat from the hospital’s left flank.
Long Ming immediately ran towards the stairwell entrance.
In the stairwell, he ran right into Johnny and his four men.
"Why haven’t you left?"
Long Ming was surprised they had come up to find him.
"We came to get you! The monsters are here, let’s go!"
Johnny said to Long Ming.
"Go!"
Without another word, Long Ming followed Johnny’s group downstairs.
They quickly reached the ground floor, but as they rushed toward the entrance, they saw a massive horde of Corpse Monsters streaming past the doorway.
"Quick, back! Upstairs!"
His expression changing, Long Ming immediately led Johnny and the others on a dash for the 10th floor.
THUMP THUMP THUMP...
A few minutes later, Long Ming’s group made it back to the 10th floor, all of them panting for breath.
"Shh!"
Long Ming held a finger to his lips, signaling for silence.
Johnny and his four men immediately held their breath, trying their best not to make a sound.
Long Ming listened intently. After confirming no Corpse Monsters had followed them, he spoke to Johnny’s group.
"Alright, we’re clear."
Johnny and the others immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
"Brother Qiang, what do we do now?"
A shorter man with a mustache asked worriedly.
"Du Yin, let me catch my breath first."
Johnny replied, gasping for air.
"There’s nothing to think about. We have to wait for the horde to pass before we can leave. Going out now is suicide,"
Long Ming stated calmly to Johnny’s group.
"What? But won’t we be separated from the main force?"
A capable-looking woman with dark spots on her face, Wu Qing, asked nervously.
"We have no choice. You hide here. I’m going to the roof to take a look."
Long Ming gave the instruction and headed for the rooftop.
"Wu Qing, you guys wait here. I’ll go take a look too!"
Johnny hurriedly followed.
「On the rooftop.」
Long Ming and Johnny ran out from the iron door one after another.
"Hey, wait up!"
Johnny shouted, panting.
Long Ming turned his head and glanced at Johnny.
Johnny hurriedly shut his mouth.
Long Ming then crouched and crept to the left edge of the roof, cautiously peering over the side.
Johnny crept up beside him and also looked down.
Below, streams of Corpse Monsters were moving toward the hospital’s rear exit. The distance was a gray haze, impossible to see through.
"It’s no use. The fog is too thick. We can’t see which way the main force went!"
"Just because we can’t see doesn’t mean we can’t figure out their direction,"
Long Ming said calmly, listening to the distant gunfire.
"Huh? How?"
"The gunshots."
"Brilliant! We can use that to get our bearings and catch up with the main force!"
Johnny gave Long Ming a thumbs-up.
Even though the fog was thick and visibility was low, the sound of gunfire traveled just fine.
"Why would we chase them?"
Long Ming replied coolly.
"Huh? We’re not going after the main force?"
"Chasing them is too dangerous. We should head directly for the extraction point and wait for them there."
"Of course! You’re the one with the brains!"
It dawned on Johnny instantly.
"Alright, be quiet."
Long Ming took a deep breath, his eyes glued to the horde of Corpse Monsters below.
’If the main force doesn’t draw all of these Corpse Monsters away, and some are left behind in the hospital, we’re probably going to die here today.’
Time trickled by.
Half an hour passed in the blink of an eye. Down below, the Corpse Monsters had all but vanished.
Long Ming couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
"The horde has passed. Let’s go down."
"Right!"
Johnny immediately nodded in response.
