Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 262: Time For Action
Sun Gang stalked back and forth in the lavish sitting room of his private villa, fists clenched tightly at his sides. His face was contorted in a rictus of rage over the latest developments within the powerful Sun family.
First, it was his grandfather embracing Sun Lixia as a long-lost daughter and doting absurdly on her sons Li Chen and Li Xinjie. As if that insult wasn’t enough, now another alleged Sun son named Yang Bojun had arrived, angling to be named the heir to the family’s vast empire and legacy.
"This is unacceptable!" Sun Gang snarled, slamming his fist against the wall. "I am the true bloodson, the rightful heir! Not these newly-appeared bastards and their whelps!"
So consumed was he by his livid inner tirade that Sun Gang started violently when a rasping voice suddenly spoke from the shadows.
"Such anger...such delicious anger."
Sun Gang whirled to face the intruder, his wild eyes landing on a stooped, aged figure draped in flowing red robes. Despite his wizened features, there was an unmistakable aura of menace cloaking the old man.
"Master Kong..." Sun Gang exhaled roughly, struggling to rein in his flaring temper. "I did not hear you enter."
The man’s head tilted up, fixing Sun Gang with a chilling stare from those vibrant, unnatural green eyes. Sun Gang suppressed a shudder - those eyes always managed to unnerve him with their ethereal, almost bestial luminescence.
"It’s time for you to finish all of this," Master Kong intoned lowly. "You will lose everything if more Sun heirs keep appearing. Transfer of shares, of power...it is only a matter of time before you are left with nothing."
Sun Gang opened his mouth to protest, but the old man raised a gnarled hand to silence him.
"Your cousin, Li Chen...he has already obtained five of the sacred manual’s pages."
Sun Gang’s eyes flew wide in shock and fear. "What?! How did he manage to find them?"
A wheezing chuckle escaped Master Kong’s thin lips, the sound raising the hairs on the back of Sun Gang’s neck.
"Oh no, dear boy...he did not find the manual. It found him - as the true chosen successor should, selected by the 7 Fists manual itself."
The old man leveled his eerie gaze fully upon Sun Gang once more.
"Li Chen is the chosen one. Chosen not just by the most sacred martial arts manual...but by the God of War himself as the prophesied new Sun family master."
Sun Gang was speechless, numb horror gripping his entire body at those words.
"No...no, that cannot be!" he finally choked out in denial. "Chen is not even a full Sun - he is half Li! The manual would never choose an impure bloodline!"
Another low, rumbling chuckle escaped Master Kong’s withered frame.
"Does blood purity truly matter to one seeking enlightenment and warrior spirit?" he taunted lightly. "I suggest you secure that manual from that Li Chen by whatever means you deem necessary. Deliver it to me...or I may be forced to seek an audience with your newly legitimized ’uncle’ instead."
With a last pointed look, Master Kong melted back into the shadows, leaving Sun Gang to stew in tumultuous seas of fury, disbelief, and slowly calcifying determination. If the 7 Fists manual had indeed chosen Li Chen as the next Sun family master, then Sun Gang would simply have to take it from his cousin’s hands - by bloody force if needed.
That ancient text, that ultimate key to power, would be his. The Sun legacy belonged to Sun Gang and Sun Gang alone, no matter what twisted destiny or deific murmurings tried to decree otherwise.
Master Kong paused, letting his ominous words about seeking an audience with Sun Gang’s "uncle" hang heavy in the air. He studied Sun Gang’s contorted features with an inscrutable expression.
"Your esteemed grandfather is a formidable man, to be sure," Kong stated flatly. "His iron grasp on your family’s empire is unquestionable...for now."
Sun Gang’s head snapped up, eyes narrowing dangerously. "What are you implying, old man?" he growled.
A cruel smirk twisted Master Kong’s thin lips. "I’m simply acknowledging the transient nature of all things. Even legends as great as Old Master Sun cannot defy the laws of mortality forever."
He let the thinly veiled threat linger, allowing Sun Gang’s feverish imagination to run wild interpreting his meaning. After a protracted silence, Kong gave an unconcerned shrug.
"But I’m certain a man of your...ambition...need not worry about such eventualities. Not if you recover the path to ascendancy laid out in the 7 Fists pages from your usurping cousin’s hands."
Sun Gang clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white. "And if I cannot pry them from Li Chen? What then?"
The smirk returned to Master Kong’s lined face. "Then perhaps a stalemate ends with a blade slipped silently between the ribs of an old man no longer capable of keeping both eyes open."
The implication hung in the air like a suffocating fog. Sun Gang swallowed hard, unable to meet the old man’s chilling emerald stare.
With a last inscrutable look, Master Kong turned and retreated into the shadows once more, his wheezing breaths fading into the distance.
Left alone, Sun Gang paced the room in a spiraling vortex of dark thoughts. Was the decrepit old bastard really insinuating they hasten Grandfather’s demise if need be? The mere notion of such an unforgivable act of violence against the family patriarch curdled Sun Gang’s blood.
And yet...the temptation of unfettered control of the Sun family legacy glittered like a perverse siren call. If Grandfather did pass, and Sun Gang did not possess the sacred 7 Fists manual by then, he could potentially be locked out of inheriting the empire. Especially if these newly "recognized" relatives continued worming their way into his grandfather’s graces.
As Sun Gang descended deeper into the recesses of his blackest ambitions, visions of stained steel and a final, dying rasp from the old man flitted through his furious mind’s eye. He quickly banished them, straightening his shoulders in grim determination.
One way or another, he vowed silently, the path to total Sun family dominance would be his to command - at any cost. Even if it meant removing any obstacles, no matter how longstanding or revered, from his path to absolute victory.
Sun Gang remained rooted in the center of the sitting room long after Master Kong’s ominous presence had faded away. His chest heaved with harsh breaths as he wrestled with the harrowing implications the old devil had laid before him.
How dare that twisted relic even insinuate... Sun Gang cut off his own thought process, unwilling to directly confront the poisonous suggestions regarding his revered Grandpa Sun’s future that now lurked in the shadowed recesses of his mind.
The great patriarch would live for many more years by the grace of the ancestors, Sun Gang told himself sternly. He was haler and more tenacious than men half his age. Any perceived threats to Grandpa Sun’s iron rule over their family’s empire were merely the ramblings of a deranged old mystic grasping at straws.
And yet, the treacherous seed had been planted.
What if, some dark part of Sun Gang’s psyche wondered, the unthinkable did occur? What if Grandpa Sun did meet an untimely demise as Master Kong so coldly predicted? Where would that leave the recognized chain of succession and the future of their vast holdings?
His father, Sun Weilong had no fortitude to command the family’s full might as the undisputed new Sun patriarch. And with these newly emerging "relatives" nipping at Sun Gang’s heels, seeking to undermine his birthright...
A muscle ticked sharply in Sun Gang’s clenched jaw as his fists coiled so tightly, his nails drew beads of blood from his calloused palms. All his years of training, of sacrifice, of unquestioning loyalty and ruthless brilliance would be for naught if that addlepated fossil’s words rang true. He would be cut off, left with nothing, while the ungrateful parasites reaped the full rewards.
The injustice of it all flooded Sun Gang’s senses in a crimson haze of rage. He was the natural choice, the most cunning and capable heir to carry on Grandpa Sun’s legacy! Not these usurping upstart bastard sons sniffing around for undeserved scraps of fortune and power.
If it took removing any who stood in his way, by whatever means necessary, to claim his rightful mantle as the absolute master of the Sun family empire...then so be it. Master Kong’s vile insinuations no longer seemed so far outside the realm of possibility for a man as determined as Sun Gang.
His path was clear now. He would obtain those missing 7 Fists Manual from Li Chen’s hands. Then, through the mastery of that ancient manual’s profound power, Sun Gang would force the issue and seize control of the Sun family’s dominance by any method required.
Whether Grandpa Sun still drew breath by that point or not.
With a resolute squaring of his powerful shoulders, Sun Gang turned and exited the sitting room, already mentally plotting his next move to demolish any obstacles between himself and total victory - no matter what form those obstacles may unfortunately take.
