Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 151: You Ask Me How I Know?
"Then you’re probably too late," Nathan Fawcett said, rubbing it in. "He’s already moved out."
"Good," Anne Sutton said. "I’m glad he moved out! I certainly wasn’t going to plead his case. It’ll be even better when he gets out of the Fawcett Group."
Nathan Fawcett watched her and thought that, by the looks of it, she really had nothing to do with Charles Prescott.
"Go on in," he said. "Ian’s waiting for you."
"Stella Shields..."
"She’s not in there," Nathan Fawcett said. "You can go in. Don’t worry, no one is going to say anything to you."
"Even so, I don’t really want to go in," Anne Sutton said. "I can’t shake the feeling that you’re hiding something from me. If the child isn’t hers, then why would she tell me he was? All men are liars. I can’t believe a single word you say."
’Her gut told her this man was lying right to her face!’
’That’s why she couldn’t bring herself to believe him.’
Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. "If you won’t believe me, there’s nothing I can do. You can wait here if you want. I’ll go get Ian and bring him out."
With that, he walked through the door.
Anne Sutton stood at the entrance for a few seconds before following him in. Nathan Fawcett was getting Ian up. The boy had finished his IV drip, his fever had broken, and he was ready to be discharged from the hospital.
Nathan Fawcett was helping him get dressed.
When he saw Anne Sutton, his eyes lit up. "Anne."
Anne Sutton smiled, looking at the sweet boy.
Ian immediately pushed Nathan Fawcett away. "I want Anne to dress me," he said.
Nathan Fawcett: "..."
’This little rascal. Forgets all about his dad the second his mom’s here.’
Just then, someone walked over and stood in the doorway. "Mr. Linden."
Nathan Fawcett looked up and saw a hospital staff member.
He stepped outside.
Anne Sutton finished dressing Ian and led him out of the room. She saw Nathan Fawcett standing by the door, speaking with the hospital director.
The director looked at Nathan Fawcett and asked, "How has Dr. Linden been? I haven’t seen her in quite a while."
Everyone at the hospital knew that Ethan Linden was Dr. Anna Linden’s son, so they always took special care of him.
So, when the director heard he had brought his son in, he made a point of coming over to greet him personally.
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett replied, "She’s doing fine."
"I heard the young master was ill," the director said. "Is it serious?"
"His fever has broken."
The director turned and saw Anne Sutton standing there. His face filled with surprise. "Dr. Sutton, what are you..."
’A few years ago, Anne Sutton was with Nathan Fawcett. How is she with Ethan Linden now? It was all very confusing.’
Nathan Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton, then turned to the director and said, "She’s my girlfriend."
The director’s eyes widened when he heard this. "..."
’He clearly hadn’t expected that Anne Sutton, a widow, could manage to snag a wealthy young man like Ethan Linden.’
But when Anne Sutton heard Nathan Fawcett’s words, she didn’t feel the slightest bit happy. In fact...
’She wanted to clamp a hand over his mouth.’
It was one thing for him to say that at the company, where only people from the Fawcett Group would know.
But if everyone at the hospital found out she was the other woman, how could she ever show her face here again?
Anne Sutton quickly denied it. "No, we’re not close."
The director glanced at Ian, who was nestled in Anne Sutton’s arms. ’...not close?’ he thought.
Anne’s head throbbed with frustration. Her denial felt utterly feeble.
"Well, I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll leave you to it," the director said. "We should have dinner together sometime."
And with that, he walked away.
Anne Sutton shot Nathan Fawcett a glare.
Nathan Fawcett: "..."
Once they were in the elevator, Anne Sutton demanded, "Why did you have to say that nonsense in front of the director?"
"Nonsense?" Nathan Fawcett gave her a cool look. "What did I say?"
"That I’m your girlfriend?" Anne Sutton stared at him. "Now everyone at the hospital is going to think I’m the other woman! I can’t even imagine how they’ll gossip about me."
’They were all people she knew, but that didn’t mean they were all her friends. Plenty of them would love nothing more than to see her humiliated.’
’Getting mixed up with a man who had a wife and child... the thought made Anne’s stomach turn.’
Listening to her, Nathan Fawcett said, "You haven’t listened to a single thing I’ve told you."
"You’re full of lies. How am I supposed to know if you’re telling the truth?"
"..."
Nathan Fawcett didn’t bother explaining further.
The three of them returned to the Fawcett Residence. Anne Sutton went straight to the kitchen to make a meal for Ian.
She spoke only to Ian, completely ignoring Nathan Fawcett.
Nathan Fawcett sat on the sofa, watching her bustle about in the kitchen. He recalled how, back when he was sick, her cooking was the only thing he wanted to eat.
’It had been a long time since he’d tasted her cooking.’
Anne Sutton finished cooking and brought the food out. "Ian, come and eat."
Since Ian was still recovering, she had specially made some of his favorite dishes.
Ian came over right away, sat down, and asked Anne, "Can my daddy eat with us too?"
"Let the housekeeper make something for him," Anne Sutton said.
"And why can’t I eat?" Nathan Fawcett challenged her.
With that, he sat down in a chair right beside them.
Anne Sutton sat down and served herself and Ian some rice. She looked at the unabashed man and said, "I’m leaving after I finish eating."
"Leaving to go where?"
"I have my own home, you know."
"So you don’t plan on living here anymore?" Nathan Fawcett glanced around the house. "In that case, I might as well have Charles Prescott move back in. The space is just sitting empty, after all."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton looked at him in disbelief. "Are you saying that just to spite me?"
It had taken so much to get Charles Prescott out. Anne had even gone to check earlier today and found the place completely empty, with no trace of Charles or his father. And now he was threatening to let him move back in.
"You’re the one who made me angry first," Nathan Fawcett retorted. "It’s bad enough that you have this ambiguous relationship with Charles Prescott, but you’ve also forgotten everything you promised me. I wonder who it was that said she would be Ian’s mother and stay by my side."
"..." Anne Sutton shot him a look. "Fine. Then tell me. If Ian’s mother isn’t Stella Shields, who is she? I can’t be with you if you don’t tell me the truth."
Nathan Fawcett listened and said, "If you don’t believe me, we can get a DNA test done for Stella Shields and Ian. Just wait. I’ll have the results for you in a few days."
’He was so exasperated. The only way to get through to her was with hard evidence.’
Hearing him say that, it seemed he really wasn’t lying. "But then... why did Stella Shields say Ian was her child?"
"Go ask her. How should I know?"
His question left Anne speechless. She lowered her head and glanced at her phone, just as a news notification popped up. It was about Stella Shields being replaced as the female lead in her latest project.
Ever since Stella Shields had debuted in the entertainment industry, her career had been one smooth success after another. Nothing like this had ever happened to her.
To be replaced as the female lead now was quite a surprise.
