86 D-Day. Sunset Inn vs Walk Shop (III)

I know what you might be thinking.

Wang's presentation is the best option. If you and I were judges, we would have chosen the deal with Walk Shop.

I agree.

But that was Wang's mistake. Agreeing to this joint presentation.

My plan was getting closer and closer to completion. If the system would act in the way I believe it would, I will win this deal and stamp Elsa Klarsson. All I needed to do was something I'd already done once before.

Make Wang Tae Bin into a fool.

Fortunately, he'd given me the opportunity to do so.

There we were, standing side by side behind our respective podiums, facing the Eidolon board.

The panel included Justin Kale, Marcus Hale and three other board members. All people I knew personally and was on good terms with.

I adjusted the microphone in front of me, glancing at Wang. He had the same smug expression on his face that made it look like a toy made for punching.

Even though he tried to hide it, I could see the apprehension in his eyes. He thought he'd won but he also knew that I wasn't going to make this easy for him.

The moderator stepped forward. "Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We'll now begin the Q and A session for the Adaptive AI partnership proposal."

She gestured at us. "Both Mr. Voss and Mr. Wang will answer questions posed by the Eidolon board. Responses should be brief and to the point. Let's begin."

She nodded to Justin, who leaned forward with the smirk of a man enjoying a good show. If this was the colosseum, Justin was the emperor watching the fights.

"Mr. Voss, Mr. Wang, thank you for your presentations. My first question is for both of you. Why should Eidolon choose your proposal over the other?"

Wang pounced first, flashing his signature insufferable grin. I could see the frown that came over the face of Marcus Hale, indicating that he wasn't too fond of Wang.

Maybe because we'd found evidence of Marcus's bribery and forwarded it to Justin. I had to close that door to ensure that the fight would be on my terms. Not Wang's.

"Eidolon is in the business of innovation and my vision integrates Adaptive AI across industries, from e-commerce to healthcare, from education to entertainment." Wang said enthusiastically.

"The potential is limitless. By partnering with Walk Shop, Eidolon will become synonymous with everyday technology, expanding its reach to billions of users globally. No other proposal offers this level of ubiquity."

The audience murmured approvingly and I could almost see Wang puff up from the praise.

I stepped up, waiting for the noise to settle before speaking. "While ubiquity sounds tempting, it's a double-edged sword."

I paused, garnering the interest of the audience with my opening statement.

"My proposal focuses on depth, not breadth. By using Adaptive AI in a specific area like hospitality, we can unlock its full potential."

"With Sunset Inn, Eidolon can set the gold standard for how AI is used. Starting small and focused ensures success while trying to do too much too quickly risks failure. Run the numbers if you will. Controlled specialization wins over reckless expansion any time and any day."

This time, the murmurs were thoughtful but I could tell they weren't sold. That's okay. The big guns were coming.

Marcus Hale spoke up this time. "One of the important topics on AI today is data security and privacy. Can both of you elaborate on how your plans address growing consumer concerns about this topic?"

Wang jumped in again like an overeager puppy, not knowing that he was digging the grave he would be buried in.

"At Walk Shop, our AI operates within ethical guidelines and is built to comply with the strictest global regulations. To make sure this doesn't happen, we've partnered with leading cybersecurity firms to prevent any data breaches."

A nice and safe answer but unfortunately for Wang, it was exactly what I'd been waiting for.

"With all due respect to Mr. Wang," I gestured to him like he'd just said something stupid, "Walk Shop's track record doesn't exactly inspire confidence."

It was as if the room held its breath in anticipation.

"Let's not forget the ransomware attack just a few weeks ago, which exposed the private information of millions of users. The breach not only caused immense reputational damage but also halved Walk Shop's valuation. In fact, there are rumors of stolen PathFinder code. If Walk Shop couldn't protect its own users, how can Eidolon trust it with Adaptive AI?"

It was as if Wang's smile dried out and stiffened on his face. He opened his mouth to defend his company.

"That attack was an anomaly-"

"An anomaly that cost your company billions." I interrupted him. "Eidolon deserves a partner that not only prioritizes security but has a proven track record of maintaining it."

"At Sunset Inn, we've implemented industry leading protocols and our controlled environment allows us to anticipate and address any vulnerabilities before scaling up."

Wang defended himself but it was a lost cause. I could see the wheels turning in the heads of the audience.

What if the attackers had left a backdoor into Walk Shop's systems. They'd gotten in before. Who said they couldn't get in again?

This time, the question was from one of the two women seated at the table.

"Both of you have pitched the use of AI to enhance user experience. But we all know the public sentiment around AI nowadays. How will your proposals address concerns about algorithmic bias and consumer manipulation?"

This time, I spoke first. "Thank you for the question. Algorithmic bias is a critical issue, and it's why I've emphasized exclusivity and control in my proposal."

"By focusing Adaptive AI on hospitality, we're creating a tightly regulated environment where the AI can be tested, refined, and perfected without risking widespread consumer mistrust. The hospitality industry is, in fact, the perfect domain to build trust in AI."

I glanced at Wang, daring him to challenge me. He took the bait.

"While Mr. Voss makes a fair point," he said, "his approach limits Adaptive AI's potential. Walk Shop's AI operates across multiple sectors, gathering diverse data to reduce bias and enhance predictive accuracy. Eidolon can lead the charge in proving that AI can be trusted across all industries."

I nodded, pretending to agree before delivering my counterpunch. "And yet, oversaturation is exactly the problem."

"Consumers are already grappling with AI fatigue and there's a growing distrust in systems that invade every aspect of their lives."

"Pushing an omnipresent AI risks alienating the very users you're trying to attract. Sunset Inn offers a safer, smarter approach. A gradual integration that builds trust instead of overwhelming users."

Justin smirked at Wang's discomfort, but I wasn't done.

"Predictive AI is powerful." I continued. "But unchecked, it becomes manipulative. Consumers don't want to feel controlled. They want to feel understood. By refining Adaptive AI in hospitality first, Eidolon avoids the backlash of being seen as a tech overlord."

"Sunset Inn is proposing an exclusivity deal that will last five years. Isn't that enough time to show users the potential of AI without being branded as Big Brother?"

The session continued but by this point, I knew I'd influenced the opinion of the people that mattered. The people who sat on the board.

Justin Kale was smart. He knew exactly what I was talking about and it was this exact same point that I would be hammering throughout the session.

Would he take the risky path of trying to influence the world all at once with a product that sounded like the villain in an apocalypse story or would he take the best path of choosing the perfect sandbox to test out the vision?

Only time will tell.
