Chapter 175: Signs of Miscarriage

Her friend had always been there for her, embodying the phrase "a friend in need is a friend indeed." But right now, Lily didn’t want to trouble anyone or inconvenience them.

"Okay, okay, I won’t buy anything else. Just don’t go looking for another place to live." Sophia Bennett quickly said, then sniffed the air. "Wow, something smells amazing... Lily, if you really move out, I won’t get to eat your cooking anymore."

"Go wash your hands and come eat."

"Okay." Sophia went to wash her hands.

Lily tidied up the large bags Sophia had brought in. Suddenly, Sophia’s voice came from the bathroom, "That Alex came to our office today, asking your uncle where you’ve been staying... Your uncle didn’t see him."

"And then?"

"Then... he looked so deeply in love and pitiful, so handsome that I couldn’t resist... I ended up giving him this address. You’re not mad at me, are you, Lily?"

No wonder Alex had found her here.

Sophia had always been weak to good looks.

"How did it go?" Sophia asked eagerly, wiping her hands as she returned, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Did Alex come to see you?"

"Yes," Lily nodded.

"What did you two do? What did you do!?" Sophia’s eyes sparkled even more. The forbidden, scandalous romance between siblings was too enticing to resist.

The gleam in Sophia’s eyes left Lily speechless.

Sophia’s mind really did work in unusual ways.

"Nothing much," Lily didn’t elaborate. If Sophia knew Alex and Ethan had gotten into a fight at the stairs, she’d be even more excited...

That night, Lily was abruptly woken up by sharp pain. Her abdomen hurt so much that cold sweat broke out on her face...

Click—

Lily winced through the pain and turned on the light. She felt a warm, sticky sensation between her legs. When she looked at the bedsheets, she saw blood—fresh blood, much more than what would be typical for her period, and the pain was excruciating.

It seemed like her health was getting worse... She couldn’t keep ignoring it.

Lily quietly dressed and slipped out of the apartment, not wanting to disturb her sleeping friend. She forced herself to walk down the stairs, and in the middle of the night, she hailed a taxi to the nearest hospital.

Throughout the ride, waves of pain pulsed through her abdomen. Lily bit her lip hard, wiping the cold sweat from her forehead. Her face was ice cold...

When she arrived at the hospital, the emergency room doctor directed her to the gynecology department. Lily immediately sensed something was wrong—why would they send her to gynecology?

In the quiet of the night, inside the gynecology department—

The kind-looking female doctor asked her a few questions and then instructed her to lie on the examination table. After pressing on Lily’s abdomen, the doctor’s expression darkened with concern.

Lily’s face was covered in cold sweat. "Doctor, what’s wrong with me?"

Why was the doctor frowning?

Had she developed a severe illness? But her previous checkups had been fine, aside from vomiting twice. It couldn’t be that serious, right?

Lily’s mind started to spiral into confusion.

"Did you come here alone?" the doctor asked, still frowning. She pulled back the curtain and told Lily to get dressed. Then, she walked to her desk to write out a diagnosis.

"Yes," Lily nodded. What did coming alone have to do with anything? Was it bad news?

The doctor continued writing without saying a word, and Lily grew more anxious. "Doctor, am I okay?"

"Okay?" The doctor, a woman in her fifties, shot her a cold glance. "You’re showing signs of a miscarriage, and you think that’s okay? What do you call something serious then?!"

Lily’s eyes widened in shock, her voice shaky, "What did you say?!"

Miscarriage?!

What did she mean by miscarriage? Only pregnant women could miscarry! How could she be having a miscarriage?

Was she... pregnant?!

How was that possible...

"You didn’t know you’re four weeks pregnant?" The doctor’s expression grew colder as she scolded Lily. "You young people are so reckless, playing around without a care for your health!"

Lily sat there quietly, letting the doctor chastise her, but inside, her thoughts were in chaos.

She was four weeks pregnant. She had a child?!

Miscarriage...

What did that mean?

Just the thought of the word sent her a wave of cold fear. Did that mean her baby was already...

"Am I..." Lily placed a trembling hand on her flat stomach, her lips quivering as she asked, "Have I already..."

Had she already lost the baby...

"There are just signs of a miscarriage. If you don’t start taking better care of yourself, you won’t be able to keep this baby." The doctor shook her head.

Hearing that, Lily let out a sigh of relief without even realizing it herself.

The doctor finished writing the diagnosis and handed it to her. "You need to be admitted for a week of observation. Where’s your husband? You’re so young—don’t tell me you’re not married yet. Where’s your boyfriend? He should be here taking care of you!"

Assuming Lily was one of those reckless, irresponsible young women, the doctor gave her a lengthy lecture about self-care and responsibility for nearly half an hour...

She threw out one theory after another. Lily’s mind was too overwhelmed to really process it all.

"If you’re not married, are you planning to keep the baby?" the doctor suddenly asked, considering another possibility.

"Not keep the baby?" Lily asked, still in a daze.

She had just been told she was pregnant, and now she was being asked whether she wanted to keep the baby?!

Lily placed a hand on her abdomen, feeling a bit lost, unable to think clearly.

"Yes, if you don’t want the baby, it’s best to decide early. Don’t wait until your belly’s bigger—it’ll make things harder on you later."

"I’ll think about it."

Lily didn’t give a definitive answer. Her mind was in turmoil. She had just learned she was pregnant, and now she was being asked to decide...

Everything was coming at her so fast that she could hardly handle it all...

"Alright, go ahead and get admitted. Call your boyfriend to come and stay with you. You’re only four weeks in and already showing signs of miscarriage. If you’re not careful, you’ll lose the baby."

After a series of tests and treatments and another round of doctor scolding, Lily was finally allowed to leave.

She was placed in a regular hospital room. Lying on the bed, her abdomen still ached slightly, but it was much better than before.

The other patients were already asleep, but Lily lay awake, her mind racing.

A baby. She was carrying Ethan Blackwood’s baby.

No wonder she had been nauseous even when her stomach wasn’t upset—that was a typical symptom of pregnancy.

Sophia had joked about her being pregnant, and Lily had confidently said she wasn’t...

Wait, she had just had a complete checkup recently. Pregnancy can usually be detected as early as two weeks, so why hadn’t the report mentioned it?

Alex had also had her checked by a doctor, and they hadn’t mentioned pregnancy either.

Had they missed it, or... had they all been keeping it from her?!

It had already been four weeks, and she was only now finding out she was pregnant...

Lying on her side, Lily placed her hand over her flat stomach. It was still completely flat, and there was no sign of anything growing inside... but there was a child in there.

"If you’re not married, are you planning to keep the baby?"

"If you’re not keeping the baby, it’s best to decide early."

Am I going to keep this baby?

Should she keep this baby? Her life was a mess right now; her health wasn’t great, and she didn’t even have a job... How could she take care of a child?

And the baby was Ethan Blackwood’s.

Should she tell him? After all, it was his child, too. Ethan had the right to know, and whether to keep the baby or not should be a joint decision.

Ethan would definitely want the baby. He had already said before that he wanted a child.

But suppose she told him, with his personality. In that case, he’d immediately drag her back to the Blackwood estate and never let her leave. And she didn’t want to lose her freedom again.

Should she tell him or not? Should she keep the baby or not? Given the chaotic state of her life, was it even appropriate to bring a child into the world?

All these conflicting thoughts swirled around in her mind, and Lily spent the entire night wide awake. By the time the doctor made her rounds in the morning, she still hadn’t decided.

Tell him or don’t tell him?

Keep the baby or don’t keep the baby?

Even though she had just found out she was pregnant, she didn’t feel any joy. She didn’t even know if this child should be brought into the world...

With her current circumstances, could she provide a good life for this child?

After a few routine checks, the doctor called her into the office and handed her a black-and-white photo, pointing to a tiny dot on it. "This is your baby. Right now, it’s only the size of an apple seed."

Lily’s hand shook as she took the photo, and it slipped from her fingers onto the desk. "Baby?"

"Yes, your baby, not a monster. No need to look so scared," the doctor said with a hint of sarcasm, pointing again to the tiny dot. "If you take good care of yourself, this apple seed will grow into a healthy baby."

Your baby, not a monster.

Lily’s lips trembled as she retook the photo, staring at the tiny dot. It was so small...

A baby.

This was her and Ethan’s child?! This tiny dot would grow inside her, little by little...

Lily’s finger lightly traced the small dot in the picture, her thoughts scattered. Would the baby look like her or like Ethan? Ethan was handsome, but if the baby inherited his bad temper, that would be a problem...

"Well? The more you look at it, the cuter it seems, right?"

The doctor’s voice snapped Lily out of her thoughts.

She was shocked by her own thinking... She hadn’t even decided whether to keep the baby and here she was, wondering what the baby would look like?!

What was wrong with her...

"Where’s your boyfriend? Why hasn’t he shown up yet?" the doctor suddenly asked, annoyed. "Is he really letting you stay in the hospital alone? Did you bring your clothes?"

"I’ll go back and pack my things today," Lily quickly replied, obedient.

The doctor was strict and loved to lecture, but her words were full of concern. She was a good doctor, and after seeing that Lily was alone, she spent the entire morning giving her detailed instructions on how to take care of herself.

"You’re going to pack your things?" The doctor’s face darkened. "Is your boyfriend neglecting you? I told you, young women like you don’t know how to judge men properly. A few sweet words, and you’re ready to jump into bed with them without self-respect..."

The doctor spent another half an hour lecturing her before finally letting her go.

Lily left the office, her mind filled with the doctor’s scolding. She glanced again at the photo in her hand. The baby was only the size of an apple seed.

Was the baby going to be a boy or a girl?

It would be nice if the child had an outgoing, cheerful personality. If they took after her, they’d be too quiet, and if they took after Ethan, they’d be too troublesome...

As she passed by a window, Lily saw her reflection. Her lips were curved into a smile, her eyes bright, and her face soft and gentle. She had thought she wasn’t feeling any joy, but it turned out she was happy.
