Chapter 273: Lily’s Despair Deepens

Lily Anderson lay restrained under Ethan Blackwood’s hold, no longer struggling. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably, blurring her vision.

"He’s our son... He can’t be gone. He just can’t..." Lily sobbed, repeating the exact words over and over as if saying them would somehow bring their son back to life.

Ethan released his grip and gently pulled her into a seated position on the bed. Wrapping his arms around her trembling frame, he brushed her tear-soaked cheeks with his large hand and said softly, "Lily, just pretend he never existed."

Pretend he never existed?

How could she?

The stack of parenting magazines on the shelf by the wall was still there—how often had she read through them? She had even ordered a pile of toys from those magazines.

Her belly had grown, undeniably real. She had fully experienced the process of pregnancy and felt every reaction and every flutter of life within her.

How could she possibly pretend that this child had never existed?

"He was our only son..." Lily said, her voice trembling as she leaned weakly against Ethan’s chest.

He was their son, and with her current health, she couldn’t conceive another child. He was their only child and legacy; there would never be another.

Their one and only child... was gone.

Lily’s body trembled even more violently, and Ethan held her tighter.

Ethan brought Lily to the cemetery where their son had been buried. The tombstone bore no inscription, only a simple bouquet of fresh flowers resting on its surface. Lily knelt, her hand trembling as she touched the cold, unmarked stone.

Their son...

Her fingers quivered as tears welled in her eyes. "Why? Why wouldn’t you even take a single photo of him?"

The baby was already gone, and she hadn’t even seen him once. Why hadn’t Ethan taken a photo so she could at least know what her son looked like?

"He’s gone. Seeing him would only make you grieve even more," Ethan said, crouching beside her. He moved the bouquet slightly, his dark eyes fixed on the tombstone. "You’ve thought of so many names. Tell me which one you like, and I’ll engrave it."

Engraved...

For some reason, hearing those words made Lily’s tears flow silently again.

She had thought of names to give her son a bright and promising identity and bless his future. She hadn’t chosen a name for engraving on a tombstone—unlike this...

"Stop crying," Ethan said, reaching to cup her face. His warm fingers lingered on her tear-streaked cheeks.

"I didn’t even get to see him, not even once... Ethan... how could you not let me see him? How could you..." Lily’s hand unconsciously dug into the dirt beneath the tombstone.

Seeing her actions, Ethan quickly grabbed her hand and said coldly, "Lily, stop this!"

What was she doing?

She wasn’t causing a scene; she just wanted to see her child. Even a photo, even his lifeless body—anything would do.

"You’ve seen enough. Let’s go home," Ethan said, his tone firm. He picked her up and carried her to the car, driving her back to the Blackwood family estate.

At the Blackwood estate, everyone seemed to know the tragic news already. When Lily arrived, the household staff and family members gathered at the entrance, but their faces were solemn and devoid of joy.

Even Tommy Blackwood, who was usually carefree and playful, stood at the doorway looking unusually somber as he watched her.

Ethan led Lily to the sitting room, where he guided her to sit on the couch. Tommy immediately followed, snatching a cup of tea from a servant and handing it to her with an uncharacteristically caring tone. "Here, drink some tea."

"Sorry, I’m a bit tired. I’ll head upstairs," Lily said softly, her voice lifeless as she stood and went to the stairs.

Ethan’s dark, brooding gaze followed her every step.

Tommy, still holding the cup, froze in place. After a moment, he roared, "Lily, losing the child doesn’t mean losing everything. He didn’t even have the chance to experience this world, so he wouldn’t have felt much pain or attachment when he left."

Lily’s body stiffened, trembling slightly.

"Shut your mouth!" Ethan growled, grabbing the television remote and hurling it at Tommy. "No one will mistake you for a mute if you don’t speak!"

Who gave him the right to salt the wound of his woman?!

"I was just trying to comfort her..." Tommy muttered, rubbing the bump on his forehead where the remote had hit him. Why was he getting attacked?

"Get back to your room!" Ethan barked, his voice cold and menacing. He stood and followed Lily upstairs.

The two adjacent rooms next to the master bedroom had been converted into nurseries—one for a boy and one for a girl. Lily pushed open the door to the boy’s room. Inside, the room was filled with innocent, childlike charm.

She had left ample space on one wall. Once the baby was born, it was meant to hold a family portrait.

Oh, that’s right—they were planning to leave this place. The portrait could still be hung up in their new home, which she had already envisioned decorating in the same way...

She had planned it all out.

Lily stood frozen, staring at the room as though trapped in a dream. She still couldn’t believe it.

The baby... was just gone.

The window was open, and the light blue curtains swayed gently in the breeze.

Lily’s fingers touched the wind chime hanging above the crib. It emitted a crisp, melodic sound, like a child’s laughter—soft and cheerful.

It was beautiful.

No sound in the world could compare to this.

She had only heard her baby cry faintly once. She hadn’t even had the chance to listen to his laughter...

She had thought she wouldn’t live to see him grow up, but now, she wouldn’t even be part of his childhood.

Before he was born, she had planned a play area for him. Even as a crawling infant, he would have toys to keep him entertained...

In the crib lay a baby journal, still blank except for ten words written on the first page:

Father: Ethan Blackwood

Mother: Lily Anderson

The door suddenly closed behind her. Without turning around, Lily knew it was Ethan who had entered. She flipped through the journal, saying, "I was going to start writing about the baby’s milestones the moment we got home from the hospital."

Ethan silently took the journal from her hands and tossed it back into the crib.

"You too. Why didn’t you spend more time with our son?" Lily asked, lifting her gaze to meet his. She forced a smile, but it was stiff and unnatural. "Did he ever smile? Was he a fussy baby?"

After the baby was born, Ethan spent nearly all his time in her hospital room, leaving only when necessary. Why hadn’t he spent more time with their son?

"Lily, enough. I’ll give you today, but starting tomorrow, stop thinking about the baby," Ethan said, his voice calm but firm.

"Were you with him when he passed?" Lily continued to press, ignoring his words.

She kept reopening it like a wound despite his efforts to cover it for her. No matter how painful, how raw, or how much it bled, she refused to let it heal.

That was her stubbornness.

"..." Ethan walked to the window, gazing silently outside.

The answer was clear.

Their only son had passed away alone, without anyone by his side.

"Why didn’t you stay with him?" Lily asked.

"Lily! He’s gone! You need to let him go!" Ethan shouted abruptly, his voice echoing through the room.

Lily froze, staring at him with a pale face. For some reason, she felt an unfamiliar coldness emanating from him. He kept telling her to forget the baby, to let go of this memory...

Lily stared blankly at his face, her voice trembling as she asked, "Didn’t you say... you loved our son?"

"He’s gone! You need to forget him. Do you understand?!" Ethan roared, his tone icy and filled with an oppressive darkness.

Yet as he stood by the window bathed in sunlight, the warm light softened his features, making him look almost gentle.

Lily was startled, taking a step back.

"Ethan, is that all you know how to say?" she asked weakly.

"It’s for your good!"

"Our son is gone. I want to know more about him. Why won’t you tell me anything?!" she cried, her voice breaking. Was it wrong for her to want answers? Why did he keep repeating that she had to forget that their son was gone?

"Lily! Stop being so stubborn! The baby is gone. He’s not coming back!"

Ethan’s tone was even harsher than hers.

If not for the familiarity of his face, she might have thought the man standing before her wasn’t Ethan Blackwood but someone utterly detached from their son.

Someone who had no connection to their child. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"I don’t need you to remind me so many times."

Lily took one step after another backward, her mind in turmoil. She turned and stormed out of the room, rushing past a group of shocked servants and Tommy lounging on the couch.

"What’s going on?" Tommy asked, sipping his tea as he watched Ethan descend the stairs.

Ethan’s gaze followed Lily’s retreating figure. His expression was dark and grim, but he didn’t chase after her. Instead, he instructed one of the servants, "Assign someone to follow her! Make sure nothing happens to her!"

"Yes, Mr. Blackwood," the servant replied.

Tommy raised an eyebrow, smirking as he said, "And you said I don’t know how to talk. You managed to drive Lily off yourself."

"She’s my woman. It’s none of your business!" Ethan snapped coldly.

"Sure, sure. Only you get to upset her," Tommy said with a dramatic roll of his eyes.

"Tommy, I’m already furious! If you want a fight, step up!" Ethan growled, his eyes blazing with rage as he shot a fiery glare at his brother.

Tommy flinched, nearly dropping his teacup. "No way! Fighting, you would be asking for a beating!"

"Mr. Blackwood!" A maid suddenly rushed in, panic evident on her face. "Miss Anderson just drove off in a car!"

Drove off?!

Was she insane?! With the AuroraVirus in her system, she could have a flare-up at any moment!

"Shit!" Ethan cursed under his breath, darting out of the house. He jumped into his car and sped off in pursuit.

Lily’s mind was a chaotic storm as she climbed into a sports car and sped out of the Blackwood estate, tearing down the road.

Their son was gone.

He’s already gone! You have to forget him!

Forget him!

Ethan’s words replayed in her mind over and over again. He hadn’t said much, but every word was the same: their son was gone, and she needed to forget.

How could she forget? He was their only child; there would never be another. How could Ethan speak so coldly? How could he seem so indifferent?

He hadn’t even taken a single photo of the baby, hadn’t even been there to hold him as he left this world alone.

Lily’s thoughts spiraled into a tangled mess. Unable to control herself, she pressed harder on the accelerator, the car speeding faster and faster.

Suddenly, an elderly woman stepped into the road.

Lily’s eyes widened in shock, her pupils dilating as she slammed on the brakes. The tires screeched against the asphalt, emitting a piercing, grating sound.

Her heart pounded wildly in her chest, and her chaotic thoughts dissolved into a blank void.

The sports car came to a halt at the side of the road.

Lily stared down at her trembling hands, gripping the steering wheel. Slowly, she realized—what was she doing? She had the AuroraVirus, and she had gone out driving...

Collapsing against the steering wheel in despair, Lily’s mind raced with countless thoughts as if she had suddenly awakened from a daze.

Why had she run out like this?

Was it just because of Ethan’s words? He only wanted to spare her pain. How could she have been so quick to assume he was being cold...

Their child was gone. Ethan had waited an entire month before telling her. She couldn’t even imagine the torment he must have endured during that time.

The child was theirs. Ethan’s grief couldn’t have been any less than hers... How could she have been so selfish, running off like this, driving a car no less? She must have driven him out of his mind with worry.
