Chapter 106: Encountering My Cousin in the County Town

Xu Mumu hadn’t been back for long when she saw Xu Xue return, looking rather downcast.

Xu Mumu pressed her lips together without saying anything; Xu Xue wasn’t a child anymore, and how she dealt with it was her own business.

The next morning, Xu Minghui set off with the family’s hopes on his back, carrying a big bag, and headed to the county town with Xu Mumu.

"Bro, do a good job," Xu Mumu said, patting Xu Minghui on the shoulder. It was such a good job, and she didn’t want him to aim too high.

"Don’t worry, I’ll do my best. When I get my salary, I’ll buy you some nice clothes." Xu Minghui responded with a smile.

"Alright, I want the most expensive ones. Bro, you really need to work hard." Xu Mumu grinned, not believing how he was already thinking about spending his salary before even starting work.

"No problem," Xu Minghui replied confidently.

"Okay, don’t forget what I asked you to do," Xu Mumu said, giving her brother a resigned look. Her expectations for Xu Minghui weren’t high; she just wished he’d be honest and spend some time on those textbooks.

"I’ve got it all in mind," Xu Minghui replied, feeling a headache coming on, thinking his sister was addicted to being a teacher.

If he dared not to study, just thinking about his sister’s terrifying strength, Xu Minghui felt subdued.

Back at school, with Xu Minghui’s job settled, Xu Mumu wasn’t as worried as before. Seeing her lazy brother at home every day gave her a headache, and she hoped he’d learn something worthwhile at work.

"Mumu, who knew your brother was quite impressive," Du Yu said, approaching Xu Mumu after class.

"What happened, what happened?" Xue Yan asked curiously; she already knew that Xu Mumu had asked Du Yu to help her brother find a job.

Du Yu, having heard about Xu Minghui’s performance from his father, began to narrate animatedly as if he had been there in person.

Even Xu Mumu listened with interest, surprised that Du Yu had such a talent.

"Wow, really?" Xue Yan’s eyes sparkled. Having never experienced such things, she was naturally curious.

"Of course it’s true. My dad took him there and even watched the interview. My dad said that if the transport team didn’t choose Mumu’s brother, he would hire him at our shoe factory." Du Yu explained with a smile. His dad really did have some such ideas.

"Du Yu, what kind of meat do you like? I’ll go up the hill over the weekend," Xu Mumu said, looking at Du Yu gratefully.

"You’re going hunting?" Du Yu asked brightly, his interest piqued. He had seen Xu Mumu’s archery skills and, truth be told, wanted to join.

"Just going to have a look," Xu Mumu replied with a smile.

"Can I follow you?" Du Yu asked expectantly.

"The mountains are dangerous; it’s not a good time now," Xu Mumu refused outright. After encountering Guoshan Peak, which shouldn’t have been there, the family had forbidden the kids from venturing into the mountains, allowing them only at the outskirts to gather some wild vegetables.

"Why?" Du Yu asked, looking at Xu Mumu with a mournful expression.

"Just the other day, we ran into a huge snake and wild boars on the outskirts. Do you think you can handle wild boars or defeat a snake over five meters long?" Xu Mumu rolled her eyes. With Du Yu’s small build, he’d probably not even outrun a wild boar.

"Are you pulling my leg? A snake over five meters long, how big is that?" Du Yu’s eyes widened.

"Pretty big. My younger siblings almost became its meal, so just stay at home and forget about coming with me to the mountains," Xu Mumu said calmly.

She didn’t have much to offer, so bringing some game from the mountains to Du Yu’s family was a good enough gesture.

"Wow, I fear snakes the most, so I’d better not go," Du Yu said, shrinking his neck. Even for skinny little snakes, he would distance himself, let alone a huge one like Xu Mumu described. Just imagining the length gave him goosebumps.

"Mumu, tell us about your snake encounter. You haven’t shared that before," Xue Yan asked, curious despite her own fear of snakes.

"Yes, yes," Du Yu nodded, wanting to know more.

Xu Mumu gave a brief account. Truth be told, apart from the mutated snakes she saw during the apocalypse, which were larger, she hadn’t seen such a big snake before; it must have lived for many years to grow that size.

When class started, Du Yu and Xue Yan were still intrigued, fascinated by the tales Xu Mumu shared.

"Mumu, when the holidays come, I want to visit your home too," Xue Yan whispered during the lesson.

"Sure," Xu Mumu nodded, eyeing the novel on Xue Yan’s desk with a bit of a headache.

Forget it, she had reminded Xue Yan several times already, but she just wouldn’t listen.

After school, as Xu Mumu was heading back with Zhao Qing and the others, she suddenly spotted a familiar face—it was her cousin Su Xiu.

Su Xiu was walking with a man. She seemed to blush slightly at something he said.

"Mumu, what are you looking at?" Du Yu turned to follow Xu Mumu’s gaze.

"My cousin," Xu Mumu smiled, drawing Su Xiu’s attention with their conversation.

"Xu Mumu, what are you doing here?" Su Xiu gave Xu Mumu a glare.

"Cousin, I just finished school and was about to go home," Xu Mumu smiled, her gaze sweeping over the man beside Su Xiu. He had a decent look, wearing a Zhongshan suit; when he noticed Xu Mumu looking at him, he gave a polite smile.

"Cousin, aren’t you going to introduce this brother to me?" Xu Mumu asked with a grin.

"This is my boyfriend, Meng Shaohua. Shaohua, this is my cousin, Xu Mumu." Though not thrilled to see Xu Mumu, Su Xiu still introduced them.

"Hello, I’ve heard Xiuxiu mention her cousin before," Meng Shaohua said, somewhat embarrassed. Being quite shy and faced with her family’s relatives, he felt his face heat up.

"Really? My cousin actually mentioned me? Are you headed home too?" Xu Mumu smiled, glancing at Su Xiu. She was confident that even if her cousin had mentioned her, it likely wasn’t in a flattering light.

"Yes, Shaohua is on leave today, and my mom is waiting for us to come back for dinner. You should head home too and don’t mix with unsavory crowds," Su Xiu said, shooting a glare at Xu Mumu.

"These are my friends, Cousin, you should head back early, so Aunt doesn’t worry about you," Xu Mumu replied, her smile fading a bit.
