70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 128: Fried Small Fish
When frying small fish, Xu Mumu and Xu Minglei were both in the kitchen watching closely. The rice shrimp were thrown into the pot along with the small fish, while the crabs were placed in the stove by Xu Minglei, ready to be roasted.
"Grandma, it smells so good, why isn’t it ready yet?" Xu Minglei had swallowed several times already; it smelled even better than the crispy meat fried at home during the New Year—he really wanted to eat.
"What’s the rush? Wait a bit longer." Madam Chen said calmly. With so much deep-frying, of course it smelled good.
Using so much oil at once, Madam Chen felt a pang of heartache. She wouldn’t fry again next time.
After staring for another two minutes, Madam Chen scooped up the fried small fish with a slotted spoon, carefully poured the oil into a bowl to use for the next meal.
There was still some oil left in the pot, so she mixed some cornmeal, made a few cakes, and stuck them in the pot.
"Wow, sis, it’s delicious, smells so good and is crispy." Xu Minglei pinched a small piece of fish segment and put it in his mouth, exclaiming in surprise.
"Hmm, it really is good. Bring a piece to mom." Xu Mumu nodded with a smile.
The fried small fish that evening was welcomed by the whole family, Xu Mumu even put some in a small bowl to send over to Fourth room.
"Oh, Minghui has been traveling with the convoy for over half a month now, why isn’t he back yet?" Xu Hai said with a hint of longing for his son while gnawing on a corn cake.
"Minghui is still young; it’s good for him to get more experience out there." Old Xu said calmly, though he also missed his eldest grandson.
"Exactly, my son is going to make a lot of money." Li Caixia said proudly. Nowadays, whenever she goes out to chat with her girlfriends, she stands tall, thanks to her accomplished son and daughter.
Listening to their conversation, Xu Mumu didn’t interrupt. Her brother would return when the time was right, and she had given him tasks to do no matter where he was.
Her brother indeed yearned for the outside world; he wanted to explore, which was pretty good too.
Shortly after dinner, the door to the yard was knocked—it was Yin Yang.
Yin Yang came over to buy grains again. He didn’t come empty-handed, bringing a few bright and attractive oranges that looked deliciously sweet.
Seeing Yin Yang, Madam Chen warmly invited him in.
"Madam Chen, sorry to trouble you again. These are oranges my friend gave me, please try them; they taste quite nice." Yin Yang handed the bag of oranges to Madam Chen, with a gentle smile on his face.
"You, just come. Why bring anything?" Madam Chen accepted the oranges, her old face smiling with wrinkles.
"These aren’t anything valuable, Madam Chen, just don’t mind them." Yin Yang said, his smile kind.
"Oh, no, we don’t mind. Mumu already mentioned you wanted to buy some grain, we do have some coarse grains." Madam Chen said, smiling happily. Yin Zhiqing was really a good person, and during the busy farming season, she planned to ask the team leader for a lighter task for him.
Although there were orange trees in the countryside, they were completely different from the large, red ones Yin Yang brought. Usually, these oranges were red tangerines that could only be eaten after the autumn harvest. No one knew what variety the oranges Yin Yang brought were; they smelled fragrant—more aromatic than red tangerines.
"Well, sorry to trouble you, Madam Chen." Yin Yang said, casting a glance at Xu Mumu who was washing her face in the yard. Xu Mumu smiled at him and went to supervise her little brother washing his face.
There was no well at home, so using water wasn’t convenient. Xu Mumu’s family drank water from the old ancient well at the team threshing ground. Naturally, the job of carrying water fell to her father, Xu Hai, who was currently the only able-bodied worker in the family.
The water from the old well was very sweet, cool when fetched, and very refreshing to drink.
"Mumu, do you think Yin Zhiqing is wealthy? Every time he comes to our house, he brings something. He must have even more good stuff. Mumu, you two are friends, maybe you could get some good stuff from him." Li Caixia said, her eyes shining as she suggested to Xu Mumu.
Xu Mumu was speechless. Was her mom serious? Didn’t she know how important a girl’s reputation was these days? Had she gone silly during pregnancy?
"Mom, do you want to take a bath? I can heat some water for you." Xu Mumu asked, feeling a headache and trying to change the subject. She didn’t want to know her mom’s bottom line.
"There’s still water in the pot, I’ll have your dad bring a basin over later. You can use it if you want to bathe first; I’ll have your dad heat more later." Li Caixia said, thinking her daughter’s cleanliness was inherited from her own mother-in-law.
"Alright, I’ll tidy up and go take a bath." Xu Mumu nodded. She didn’t mind however her mom bossed her dad around—they enjoyed it.
After a while, Madam Chen had packed a bag of goods for Yin Yang, who readily paid for it.
Yin Yang was so generous that Madam Chen worried he might not manage with these goods, so she directed her son to help deliver them to the Zhiqing point.
After her bath, Xu Mumu felt a lot of the heat wash away, cooling her down. The weather was getting hotter; only the evenings were somewhat bearable.
She lay on the bed, fanning herself with a rush fan, and gazed at the starry sky outside through the window. There were so many stars in the sky—such clean starry skies couldn’t be seen in the post-apocalyptic era, which was filled with pollution, except for the sun; the world seemed enveloped in a scarlet pungent atmosphere, and the sky was always gloomy.
Xu Mumu missed her phone a bit; pity it was only ’76 now, and the large cell phones hadn’t entered Hua Country yet. She really missed her smartphone.
In this place with no entertainment, she could only go to bed and wake up early every day.
Unable to fall asleep, Xu Mumu began to think about future plans.
Once the policies opened, she would encourage her family to start a business. Her brother seemed very enthusiastic and interested in business.
As for herself, she was neither surprised nor overly interested in business; her last incarnation was preparing to join a decent company, enjoying a nine-to-five lifestyle, but hadn’t anticipated the apocalypse coming so quickly.
This lifetime, she might consider a different direction. The country was in need of talent, and she knew a lot from the future. In her previous incarnation, she studied materials chemistry; thinking of her smartphone made her feel a bit eager.
