Chapter 130: Doormat

After reassuring her parents, Xu Mumu finally took out the things she had bought.

Xu Mumu bought some snacks for Li Caixia, and also some meat.

"Grandma, let’s have red braised pork for lunch today." Xu Mumu bought quite a bit of meat today, she said to Madam Chen with a smile.

"Alright, whatever you say." Madam Chen said helplessly. Recently, Xu Mumu has been buying a lot of things from the county town every day, almost buying meat every other day. She nearly guessed that she had earned some money.

"Grandma, you’re really great." Xu Mumu smiled even more happily. She’s bought a lot of meat recently, and Madam Chen has gotten used to it. Whatever they like to eat, she usually makes it.

Xu Mumu helped Madam Chen wash vegetables and started cooking. On the other side, Yuan Chengjie had urgent business to attend to and didn’t stay for lunch. After Yuan Chengjie left, Xu He brought over a piece of pork belly.

"Mom, these things are to help you nourish your body." Xu He handed the meat and some supplements to Madam Chen, keeping his head down, not daring to look at her.

"Hmph, that’s more like it." Madam Chen glanced at the things Xu He brought over and seemed satisfied.

"Grandma, second uncle is really filial." Xu Mumu said with a sweet smile. Her second uncle is just too honest; she feels like bullying him.

"Not really." Madam Chen said calmly. It’s only the second family that occasionally sends stuff over. The third family, don’t even mention them, just want to come back for benefits and never return otherwise. As for the fourth family, they also send things over occasionally, but since the old couple’s lives aren’t too well off either, they don’t demand much.

"Mom, we have things to do on our end, so we’ll head out first." Not being scolded by his mother, Xu He was already very satisfied, with a foolish smile on his face.

"Quickly go, looking at your silly face is annoying." She initially wanted to praise Xu He, but since he couldn’t say anything nice, she found him annoying.

Getting shooed away by his mom didn’t bother Xu He, in fact, he was in a good mood. Since the division of family, he knew his parents really cared for him, unlike what his daughter said.

After Xu He left, Xu Mumu looked somewhat helplessly at her grandma. The meat had been rubbed with salt and seasoning, directly marinated, while those supplements were put away to eat slowly over time.

"Grandma, don’t scold second uncle next time. He’s so filial, what if your scolding drives him away?"

"He dares? He crawled out of his mother’s belly, dares not be filial, I’ll report him," Madam Chen said assertively.

She didn’t dare say much about others. Even if other sons weren’t filial, the second son definitely wouldn’t. With his silly nature, she had him all figured out. It’d remain this way for life — utterly useless.

Other than being filial and honest, he doesn’t have other advantages.

Xu Mumu felt even more distressed. Great, grandma has quite the skill, knowing to report.

But Xu Mumu knew grandma wouldn’t do that, otherwise, how could the third family be jumping around alive and well?

"Mumu, your second uncle brought malted milk essence over, I’ll make a bowl for you to drink later." Just after scolding the second son, Madam Chen’s expression quickly softened, turning to Xu Mumu with loving kindness.

"Sure, let’s all drink together." Xu Mumu nodded with a smile. Good things should be eaten, otherwise, they’d spoil and it’d be a loss.

"Alright, there’s plenty. After lunch, we’ll each have a bowl." Madam Chen paused for a moment, then nodded. Now that the family’s resources were a bit better, she wasn’t being as stingy.

Moreover, Li Caixia is pregnant now and needs more nutritional supplements.

"That’s the way it should be." Xu Mumu said with a smile. The things she’s been doing lately are paying off; at least the family’s not as hostile as those in books, and seem much more peaceful.

The red braised pork at lunch received unanimous praise, though there wasn’t much meat, everyone was a bit unsatisfied.

"Really delicious, if only we could eat like this every day." Xu Hai said leisurely, after eating, sitting under his own eaves.

"Dreaming?" Madam Chen rolled her eyes.

"If we ate every day, Dad would definitely get tired of it." Xu Mumu said with a laugh.

"How could that be, I definitely wouldn’t get tired of it." Xu Hai narrowed his eyes slightly.

"Neither would I." Xu Minglei said earnestly.

"Wanting to eat meat every day isn’t difficult, just study well, then get a good job, once you have money, you can eat whatever you want." Xu Mumu said warmly. She felt that as long as she had the opportunity, she’d instill the idea of studying hard to the kids.

"Sister, I know." Xu Minglei nodded seriously. He already knew the benefits of good grades, like his sister, who gets scholarships for good results, learns more things, and discovers ways to earn money, like the termite mushrooms they make money from every day.

After resting, the kids came over, and Xu Mumu started teaching them.

Probably thinking of skipping grades, the kids studied even more seriously. Even when Xu Mumu taught Xu Wan alone, they crowded around to learn keenly.

Since they were willing to learn, Xu Mumu was naturally happy. Although this meant less time for them to play, the benefits for their future were immense.

So she preferred they endure some hardship now. At their age, their memory’s amazing, making learning these things easier.

The kids’ earnestness increased Xu Wan’s pressure.

"Big sister, am I too dumb, needing to learn many times to grasp something?" When Xu Mumu paused, Xu Wan almost cried, for she found herself far behind her younger siblings, the gap huge, making her very frustrated.

"That’s not true. The others just have a slightly better foundation than you. Don’t think about it, just focus on studying. Even if you need to learn multiple times, once you get it, what’s the harm?" Xu Mumu said with a smile. Xu Wan wasn’t dumb, just had a weak foundation. For now, she could barely keep up with Xu Mumu’s teaching.

"Big sister, what should I do?" The little girl seemed unsure.

"Remember what I taught, diligence makes up for lack of ability. Review what I’ve taught you repeatedly after you go back." Xu Mumu said seriously. Although she disliked the second family, she didn’t really have any grievances with Xu Wan, just seeing her as a pushover frustrated her. The kids didn’t like playing with Xu Wan, only Xu Jiaojiao was willing to play with her.

"Got it, big sister." Xu Wan nodded obediently, knowing her sister had told her to be more diligent.
