Chapter 156: Elementary School Enrollment

The little ones felt a sense of emptiness in their hearts since they no longer went looking for mushrooms.

"Big sis, how are we going to make money in the future?" Xu Jiaojiao asked, feeling a bit melancholy.

"Besides looking for mushrooms, there are other ways. Your task now is to focus on your studies." Xu Mumu said gently, not wanting the children to lose sight of what’s important.

"Got it, big sis." Though Xu Jiaojiao still felt somewhat downcast, the thought of attending elementary school in the county cheered her up.

"Go read some books. I’m planning to give you a small test tomorrow, so don’t slack off." Xu Mumu said with a smile.

"Sis, this time I’m definitely going to get first place." Xu Minglei said seriously.

"Getting first place isn’t just about talking big." Xu Mumu smiled, not dampening his confidence. In fact, Xu Minglei was doing quite well, and there wasn’t much difference between the children’s grades. Even Xu Wan had caught up eventually.

She had already planned the test questions for the children, just waiting for the test tomorrow.

The next morning, the children came obediently, so well-behaved that even Tiedan was very serious.

Xu Mumu handed them the test papers she had prepared in advance. There weren’t any specific elementary school test papers, so she used her own exercise book to create the tests; the questions were written in her workbook.

Xu Mumu sat nearby, made herself a cup of tea, and started to read her physics book; she majored in science.

The children answered the questions quietly, each working on their own, without peeking at others’ answers.

Li Caixia was also watching with interest. Despite their shabby home, they managed to make things look quite official, almost resembling a real setup.

Since it was just a home test, Xu Mumu couldn’t set a strict time limit, so she let them take their time. Those who finished first gave her their papers.

Xu Mumu didn’t rush to grade the papers but planned to grade them all together once everyone finished.

The last to finish was Tiedan. Xu Mumu collected all the children’s work and let them go play while she began grading the papers.

The children didn’t go far, just playing hopscotch in the yard.

It didn’t take Xu Mumu long to finish grading the papers. She stretched, satisfied that the children did well, apart from a few careless mistakes here and there. Overall, they had grasped the knowledge, which pleased her greatly.

"Sis, have you finished grading? How did I do?" Xu Minglei looked at Xu Mumu expectantly.

"Here they are, take a look yourselves. Reflect on your mistakes, you all know how to do these questions, so I won’t explain them again." Xu Mumu said calmly.

These were all questions they’d practiced before, and Xu Mumu had explained them multiple times. If they still didn’t know how to do them, they’d deserve a rap on the knuckles.

"Got it, sis." The children nodded obediently and started reviewing their papers.

The best scorer was still Xu Jiaojiao, who got everything right without any mistakes. Xu Minglei copied a number wrong, while Tiedan and Xu Tao each got two wrong.

Xu Wan’s results also pleased Xu Mumu; she only made two minor mistakes.

The children had learned almost all of the elementary school material, and she believed they’d adjust well to life in the county’s elementary school.

Later in the day, Xu Hai came back. It was also Tian Fang’s wedding day, so Xu Hai had gone to the feast.

When Xu Hai returned, his face didn’t look very good.

"Dad, what’s wrong? Who upset you?" Xu Mumu asked curiously.

"What do you think? It was your eldest aunt’s family. You wouldn’t believe what they served; even the pigs in our brigade eat better." Xu Hai complained. He’d never seen a wedding banquet like this before, done just to collect gifts, yet too stingy to buy some meat, resulting in this kind of situation.

He always thought he was frugal, but the Old Tian Family had taught him a lesson.

"It’s not something the eldest girl there has control over, sigh." Old Xu sighed.

"Yeah, now when Big Sis looks at us brothers, her expressions aren’t friendly." Xu Hai scoffed.

Listening on the side, Xu Mumu wasn’t particularly concerned about this matter.

The start of the school term approached quickly. When it was time to register the children, members of the Old Xu Family each took one child. Liu Cuixia went too; she was there to register Tiedan.

The elementary school in the county was much bigger than the one in their village, and the children couldn’t stop looking around, overwhelmed.

Guided by Xu Mumu, they soon reached the registration area.

"What did you say? All of them are enrolling in fifth grade?" Qin, from the guidance office, looked at the children speechlessly. He had assumed they were enrolling in second or third grade.

"Yes, they’ve learned almost all the elementary content. If you’d like, you can test them, and if they do well, I hope you can place them in fifth grade." Xu Mumu replied with a smile.

These little ones were a bit of a headache; each wanted to enroll in fifth grade.

Luckily, they’d learned most of the elementary syllabus.

"Alright then, I have some end-of-fourth-grade exams here, let them take these." Qin said, a bit reluctantly. If not for the recommendation letter from a county leader, he wouldn’t have considered letting these kids join fifth grade straight away.

"No problem, thank you, Qin." Xu Mumu nodded with a smile.

Qin waved dismissively and then had them wait outside while he arranged for the tests, separating the children for the exam.

When the children saw the exam papers, they were confused. Why were the county elementary school’s questions so easy? Used to the slightly challenging questions Xu Mumu gave them, these seemed way too simple.

They completed the exam quickly, and Director Qin was left in disbelief while grading – were these really answered by those kids?

Huh, they’re all correct. How’s that possible?

The more he looked, the more astonished Director Qin became. If he hadn’t seen them take the test, he’d have suspected they’d copied answers.

"You all studied up to fourth grade at the village school?" Director Qin called the children over.

"No, I and Tiedan studied third grade; the others haven’t attended school." Xu Minglei replied calmly, sneaking a glance at the papers, spotting his own at the top with all correct answers.

"Teacher, our big sister taught us; she teaches us every day." Little Xu Jiaojiao said, her fear gone and pride evident in her posture.

"Really? Can you solve this problem?" Director Qin took out another question from his drawer and presented it to the children.

"I can." Xu Jiaojiao immediately raised her hand, explaining how she would solve it.

Director Qin was now truly convinced the children were genuinely capable. He taught fifth grade himself, and that question covered a fifth-grade topic, yet these kids knew how to solve it.

"Alright, bring them in. They can all enroll in fifth grade." Director Qin said reluctantly.

Successfully registering the children made them very happy.
