70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 190: Watching the Dragon Dance in the County Town
"Let’s go." Xu Mumu nodded, surprised that Zhao Qian and the others actually went to the county town to have fun.
Since there was nothing else to do, going to the county town seemed like a good idea. Xu Mumu greeted Madam Chen and the others, and then went with Xu Jiaojiao and a few others towards the county town.
It’s New Year’s day, and the village was very lively. Many children were picking up unlit firecrackers from the night before to play with, even though it was dangerous, they just loved playing with them.
Zhao Qian and the others were already waiting under the locust tree outside the village, everyone here was from the village, and Zhao Qing was there too.
Xu Mumu greeted them with a smile, as if she didn’t notice the unusual expression on Zhao Qing’s face at all.
To Zhao Qing, Xu Mumu only considered him a friend, she didn’t want to lead him on.
Zhao Qing had been working for half a year, and his demeanor had become more mature. He used to look quite refined, the change was really significant.
Seeing Zhao Qing reminded her of Xue Yan, she hadn’t seen Xue Yan in a long time. Entering society really can change a lot of people.
"Qian, Qing, Meizi." Xu Mumu greeted them.
Zhao Qian and the others wanted to go to the county town to watch a dragon dance. Tiedan, seeing his cousin wanting to go, naturally wanted to go too, and even called his small friends to join.
"Mumu, why don’t you usually come out to play? It’s been a long time since I saw you playing in the village." Zhao Qian said with a smile. Zhao Qian was a bit older than Xu Mumu, had been starting to look for a match since the beginning of the year, but still hadn’t found one, mainly feeling it’s hard to find someone just right for her.
"I usually stay at home reading books, and occasionally teach my younger brothers and sisters, so I don’t have much time to go out." Xu Mumu replied with a smile. The original owner’s proud nature didn’t get along well with the girls in the village.
Ever since she arrived, she’s become a bit of a homebody. Of course, she still had a strong presence in the brigade, thanks to having a mom who loved to brag. Any small thing at home would be exaggerated tenfold when spread around.
Zhao Qian looked at Xu Mumu with some envy. She naturally knew about Xu Mumu teaching her younger siblings, even Tiedan was among those taught. The Xu Family’s children could all go to the county town to study, envied by all the children in the brigade.
"Mumu, what do you usually study in class?" Liu Meizi asked curiously, noting Xu Mumu seemed to have changed a lot, no longer having the air of arrogance she used to have when looking at them, appearing much more approachable.
Xu Mumu simply shared some school anecdotes with them. Liu Meizi had never gone to school, her family was quite poor. She had a good relationship with Zhao Qian and was about the same age as her, but she was already engaged and would marry shortly after the new year.
Zhao Qing remained somewhat silent on the way, glancing at Xu Mumu several times, but she was mostly talking with the other girls, seemingly not noticing him at all.
The more it was like this, the more bitter Zhao Qing felt inside. Realizing that Xu Mumu truly didn’t like him left him feeling very downcast.
Upon arriving in the county town, if not for Xu Mumu stopping a few children, they would have probably just run off to play by themselves. Having already studied in the county town for a semester, the children were quite familiar with it.
"Big sister, big sister, over there, the dragon dance is by our school." Xu Jiaojiao said excitedly.
"Let’s go, let’s go, over there." Zhao Qian said with a smile. The Xu Family really had changed a lot.
That originally skinny little girl had put on some weight, the Xu Family’s life seemed pretty good indeed.
They quickly arrived at the dragon dance area, where many people had gathered. The dragon may have looked a bit rough but that didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm.
Xu Mumu and the others stood not far away watching. This area was close to the elementary school, with a large open space outside where many from the county town came to see the dragon dance.
After watching the dragon dance for a while, the children wanted to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy something. Before leaving, they had taken a bit of money from what they had saved with her.
"Let’s go to the supply and marketing cooperative." Zhao Qian didn’t mind where, she just wanted to check if there was anything she could buy there. She hadn’t brought much money herself and couldn’t afford much.
The children chattered happily along the way.
"Mumu, didn’t your third uncle’s family come back for the New Year?" Liu Meizi asked curiously.
"Nope, they have their own family now." Xu Mumu replied with a faint smile. The Old Lin Family had a lot of unresolved issues, and she looked down on her third uncle a bit.
"Did your third uncle really become a live-in son-in-law at your third aunt’s place?" Liu Meizi asked gossipy, seemingly oblivious to any social cues or inappropriate questions.
As soon as Liu Meizi finished, Zhao Qian quickly pulled her aside: "Mumu, Meizi didn’t mean any harm." Zhao Qian said awkwardly looking at Xu Mumu.
"I know, our family’s split now, where third uncle spends the New Year is their own business." Xu Mumu said flatly, not as warmly as before.
Upon arriving at the supply and marketing cooperative, it was open today and quite busy, with many people coming to buy things. It’s the only time of the year they can afford a little luxury.
Xu Mumu led the children inside, advising them not to run around or touch things unnecessarily.
Seeing that the children listened to her, Xu Mumu felt relieved. The little ones had changed a lot under her guidance, which made her very satisfied.
Xu Mumu looked at the variety of goods, foods, and utilities within the cooperative without finding anything she wanted to buy.
Whenever Xu Minghui went out of town, he would bring back things, often much cheaper than getting them locally.
Though outsiders thought their family lived well, only their own knew it was really quite good. Others were on two meals a day, often not having enough.
While the Xu Family had three meals a day, though often adding lots of random stuff like sweet potatoes and pumpkins to the rice, everyone still got enough to eat.
She had also made quite a bit of money from her work, allowing regular meat purchases, bettering their living standards even above the brigade leader’s family.
Xu Mumu calmly set back the clam oil she was holding, having already received a box from Xu Minghui, which she used occasionally.
Being young, her skin was fair and tender, not needing that kind of maintenance yet, which could wait for a few more years.
Beside her, Zhao Qian was a bit troubled, wanting to buy the clam oil box, but if she did, she couldn’t buy anything else.
