Chapter 226: Visiting the Du Family

"Du Yu and I are classmates, and we get along well." Xu Mumu smiled slightly and continued with her work.

"Wow, Mumu, what do you mean by drawing this?" Looking at the tables and numbers Xu Mumu had drawn, Chen Meili’s attention was instantly captured.

"It’s a secret." Xu Mumu smiled faintly. Although the method of drawing the tables was easy to explain, she didn’t want to talk about it for now. She needed to show Qin Jie first.

"Alright, so this is what Director Qin asked you to organize?" Chen Meili asked curiously. She only had a middle school education, and the work assigned to her here wasn’t difficult and was pretty easy to get the hang of.

"Yes." Xu Mumu nodded with a smile and closed the account book in her hand, then went to pour a cup of hot water.

"Chen, would you like some water?" Xu Mumu brought over the kettle.

"I’d like some." A woman in her thirties smiled at Xu Mumu. Her name was Tian Shulan, and she had been working here for several years.

"Thank you." Tian Shulan smiled back at Xu Mumu.

"You’re welcome." Xu Mumu shook her head.

No one else wanted any; they were still busy with their work, so Xu Mumu didn’t disturb them.

Xu Mumu tidied up her spot and filed all the documents she needed to work on in her drawer, which conveniently had a lock.

It was soon time to get off work, and Du Yu came over early to wait. As soon as Xu Mumu finished, she headed home with Du Yu.

While heading to the Du Family’s home, Xu He, who was also getting off work to go home for dinner, happened to see Du Yu leading Xu Mumu in that direction.

Xu He frowned. Why was Xu Mumu here at the shoe factory again? She hadn’t visited the factory much in the past six months, which relieved him a lot. Mainly, he didn’t want the people from the Old Xu Family to know about his situation at the shoe factory.

Now that he was earning a bit more, he worried his parents would demand more money for their support. His mother and eldest brother would definitely do such a thing.

Anyway, the main house was responsible for supporting them, so if he gave more money, it would end up in the main house’s hands.

Luckily, Xu Mumu hadn’t seen Xu He and didn’t know his thoughts. If she did, she would definitely criticize him. She didn’t think much of his salary—this shoe factory couldn’t compare to the transport team that Xu Minghui worked for. The official workers here only made about forty yuan a month, as Du Yu had told her.

Although not every article she submitted was selected, the manuscript fees she received were not small. Even though Xu Minghui only brought back half of his salary, it still wasn’t insignificant. Combined with the things taken after returning from that cave, Xu He’s earnings weren’t even something the family would consider.

When the landlord’s items were confiscated by the police, they were rewarded with several dozen yuan, without any public commendation, mainly because the items found there were sensitive—weaponry that couldn’t be left outside.

Strictly speaking, the only ones truly poor in the family were in the third house.

Even Xu Xue’s monthly earnings were probably much higher than Xu He’s salary. She had seen it with her own eyes—the second house’s Kangkang drank high-end baby formula, and the things they used were also excellent.

When Xu Mumu arrived at Du Yu’s house, Du Yu’s parents had already returned. In the kitchen, Qin Jie was cooking, while Du Zhen was in the living room reading the newspaper.

"Dad, the work you arranged for me is so tiring." As soon as he got home, Du Yu collapsed into a deck chair, unwilling to move. He was exhausted. He never knew work could be this tiring. If he didn’t see the others doing the same, or even more work, he might suspect his dad was deliberately giving him a hard time.

"And you’re tired already. You kid just lack exercise. Why aren’t others complaining?" Du Zhen put down the newspaper. His son really lacked exercise.

As their only child, his wife had always pampered Du Yu, raising him almost like a little girl, which resulted in this lazy demeanor. Fortunately, he wasn’t spoiled beyond repair, or else he wouldn’t know whom to cry to.

"Why don’t you look at how muscular they are compared to me?" Du Yu said weakly. His dad had it good, getting to sit in an office & call the shots, occasionally attending meetings, living the life.

"Dad, make me a team leader. I see the team leaders look much more comfortable." Du Yu turned over, looking at his dad expectantly.

"You want to be a team leader, huh?" Du Zhen smiled.

"Uh-huh." Du Yu nodded quickly.

"Ha, work hard yourself." Du Zhen chuckled coldly, thinking his son was getting ahead of himself. Does he not know his own abilities? He can’t do a thing and wants to be in charge. Even if he wanted to appoint him, no one would respect him.

"I knew it would turn out like this." Du Yu muttered, lying back on the deck chair.

Xu Mumu was amused. It was obvious that Du Zhen meant well for Du Yu, but the guy just didn’t get it. Even though grassroots jobs were tiring, they were also good for personal growth.

"Mumu, it’s your first day at work, how are you finding it?" Du Zhen, uninterested in talking with Du Yu, turned to inquire about Xu Mumu.

"Pretty good, it’s not too hard." Xu Mumu said with a smile.

"Mumu, what did you do at work today?" Du Yu asked Xu Mumu.

"Mrs. Qin asked me to organize some account books." Xu Mumu had nothing to hide.

"Ah, that’s not hard? My mom used to bring those home for me to help organize, and it gave me a headache." When Du Yu said this, his entire face scrunched up. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

"It’s not so bad. I just needed to redo some tables, and I was done by the afternoon." Xu Mumu replied with a smile.

"What kind of tables?" Du Zhen grew interested. Although tables had been used before, they weren’t widely adopted, so the factory still relied on the old bookkeeping methods.

Xu Mumu briefly explained the tables she had drawn and how to draw them.

Du Zhen was very interested. Such methods did exist, but with no one in the factory to teach, everyone knew the method but not the tricks behind it.

Moreover, many in the factory had taken over their relatives’ jobs without much formal education.

Du Yu watched his dad and Xu Mumu chat away, feeling frustrated. What’s there to talk about, and in such detail too?

Luckily, not long after, Qin Jie came out with the dishes and called Du Yu to help with the rice.

The lunch Qin Jie made was very rich—four dishes and a soup. The dishes looked very appetizing, and she had used the chicken mushrooms she sent over to make egg drop soup, Du Yu’s favorite.

As soon as the soup was served, Du Yu scooped two spoonfuls into his bowl to eat with his rice.

"Finally, I get to eat this again. This mushroom is really delicious." Du Yu closed his eyes in enjoyment. This mushroom was his absolute favorite.
