Chapter 230: Making Money Again

Working on these account books took several days, and Chen Meili and the others weren’t familiar with them yet, so Xu Mumu still needed to guide them.

The shoe factory now only gives one day off a week, and Du Yu was waiting here when Xu Mumu got off work.

"Why are you here?" Xu Mumu looked at Du Yu with some confusion. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"You don’t want me to come?" Du Yu looked at Xu Mumu feeling wronged.

"No, I’m just curious, you actually came here again," Xu Mumu said with a smile.

"I just wanted to ask you if you want to stay in the dormitory. Isn’t it troublesome for you to go back and forth every day?" Du Yu asked, looking at Xu Mumu.

"No need, I won’t stay in the dormitory; it’s pretty good like this," Xu Mumu smiled and declined. Madam Chen made her two small cushions, one to sit on the stool and another to rest on for naps, both were quite soft, so Xu Mumu didn’t want to stay in the dormitory anymore.

"You’re not tired of going back and forth every day?" Du Yu looked at Xu Mumu speechlessly. The shoe factory was a bit tight on housing, and some people who had worked for years still hadn’t been allocated a room. A single dorm room for Xu Mumu was out of the question.

"No, it’s pretty similar to going to school every day. I’m quite used to it," Xu Mumu said calmly.

"Alright, suit yourself. My mom wants to invite you over for dinner," Du Yu glanced at Xu Mumu without insisting.

"Going for dinner again? No need. My brother is coming home today, so I need to go back home for dinner," Xu Mumu said with a smile. She had already had dinner twice at Du Yu’s house this week, and she felt embarrassed to go again.

"You’re right. By the way, are there any fish by the river on your side? My cousin and I want to go fishing," Du Yu asked. This week’s work had left him both tired and bored, so he had arranged with his cousin to go fishing.

"There should be fish, but the water level has dropped a bit, so there aren’t many fish left," Xu Mumu nodded. As the weather gradually warmed, the rice paddies had already been planted, and the water was slowly returning to the reservoir. The paddies just needed enough water to sustain them.

"It’s alright if there aren’t any fish; we’re just going to have fun anyway. The river near you is wider, and the reservoir is too far," Du Yu said with a smile.

"Then come over. Come to my house for lunch tomorrow. Earlier, my brother caught a muntjac in a trap, and the meat is smoked. We haven’t finished it yet, so you can come try some," Xu Mumu said with a smile.

"Muntjac? What is that? Is it tasty?" Du Yu’s eyes lit up; it was something he had never tried before. He was often envious of Xu Mumu because there was so much good food on the mountain.

"It’s quite good," Xu Mumu nodded with a smile.

"Then I’ll go find my cousin when I get back. Mumu, see you tomorrow morning," Du Yu said happily.

"Okay," Xu Mumu said with a smile.

After tidying up her things, Xu Mumu locked up the cabinets before leaving the office.

On her way back, Xu Mumu stopped by the State-operated restaurant to talk to Master Yang about the mushrooms. They had been growing more abundantly lately, so naturally, they needed to be sold.

After arranging to deliver them every morning, Xu Mumu went home contentedly with a box of braised pork.

Every day when Xu Mumu returned, she was warmly welcomed by the village women. You see, now that she had a job, many in the village were not as fortunate. Even though several had graduated high school, finding a job wasn’t easy, and many were idle at home.

She had encountered several who wanted to arrange a marriage for her, which left her both amused and exasperated. Ever since her mother set high standards for marrying off daughters and bringing brides in, the quality of potential matches for her and Xu Minghui had improved.

The Old Xu Family was now considered relatively well-off in the village, even though Li Caixia and her husband didn’t appear exceptional. Still, Xu Mumu and her brother were quite popular.

"Brother, you came back early," Mumu said when she returned and found Xu Minghui already home. Her little brother was on his shoulders, playing in the yard, laughing happily without a hint of fear.

"Just the usual. Sis, what did you buy this time?" Minghui seemed to catch a whiff of braised pork when he saw the food container she brought out.

"Braised pork, we’ll have it for dinner," Mumu smiled and said.

"Jiaojiao, from now on, you guys have to look for mushrooms every day. I’ve already talked to Master Yang, so I’ll take them to him when I go to work," Mumu said as she placed the container in the kitchen and smiled at Xu Jiaojiao.

"Big sis, we’ll definitely search carefully every day," Xu Jiaojiao said excitedly, thrilled to be able to earn money again.

"Sis, do we have to get up early to look for them every morning, like when you go to school?" Xu Minglei asked, looking a bit conflicted. Now that he was on break, he was thinking it might be nice to sleep in a bit.

"No, you can go during the day. I’ll deliver them the next day," Mumu said with a smile, pinching Xu Minglei’s cheek.

"That’s a relief," Xu Minglei said, visibly reassured. After all, only they knew how to find those mushrooms; Mumu taught them how to identify many edible fungi, and they always brought back a good haul.

Xu Minghui felt a bit envious. Although he hadn’t seen Mumu’s account books, he knew the kids had saved quite a bit of private money, even more than he had managed to save.

"Big sis, we can sell the dried mushrooms too; we’ve stored a lot," Xu Jiaojiao said happily. Their harvest over this period had been quite good; even before the break, they had been collecting mushrooms for months, and the dried amount was quite substantial.

"How much do you have?" Mumu asked, curious. Gathering mushrooms was mostly the kids’ task; she only occasionally helped pick a few.

"My dad weighed it. We have over twenty pounds dried," Xu Jiaojiao said proudly.

"Then I’ll take them to the black market tomorrow to sell," Mumu said after thinking for a moment. Truth be told, she didn’t need to go specifically to the black market anymore after meeting Qi Feng, nor did she need to worry about getting caught by patrols, so there wasn’t much risk.

Taking her little brother off Minghui’s shoulders, Mumu smiled as the little guy reached out his hands wanting her to hold him.

By evening, everyone from the Old Xu Family had returned home, making the house livelier.

With both Mumu and Minghui home, the family was happy to have another rest day tomorrow. Madam Chen went directly to fetch a piece of muntjac meat to stir-fry for a big bowl, which, despite mostly consisting of additional ingredients, still had the family excited.

In her room, Mumu returned the book from her bag to the shelf, knowing she had read it several times and that it was time to switch to a new one.
