Chapter 234: County Meeting

Early the next morning, Xu Mumu set off with her things.

When she arrived at the county town, it was still early. Xu Mumu first went to Qi Feng’s place; many of those in their circle were early risers for business.

"Why are you here again?" Qi Feng, seeing Xu Mumu, wasn’t so afraid anymore. After all, this little girl wouldn’t beat them up without reason, and they hadn’t provoked her.

"I’m selling you guys some stuff." Xu Mumu took out the dried mushrooms, not minding Qi Feng’s disdain.

"Do you have any more dried mushrooms?" Qi Feng hesitated upon seeing what Xu Mumu took out. These were good items and could fetch a good price once sold.

"There’s this much left at home; I’ll bring you more tomorrow." Xu Mumu said calmly. The kids were considerate, worried she couldn’t carry everything, so they split the dried mushrooms into two parts to deliver separately.

"Isn’t there any more? We really need it." Qi Feng looked at Xu Mumu.

"There’s no more." Xu Mumu felt speechless, "Hurry up and count the money, I’m in a rush to get to work." Xu Mumu almost rolled her eyes; these mushrooms weren’t that easy to gather. After collecting a huge pile, only a tiny bit remained after drying. The ratio was too low. If these dried mushrooms weren’t so profitable, the kids wouldn’t have bothered.

"Alright, alright, so what’s that in your other hand? Are you selling that too?" he asked, looking at the small basket in Xu Mumu’s other hand.

"This isn’t for you guys; I’m taking it to the state-run restaurant." Xu Mumu looked at Qi Feng with a half-smile. This guy wanted her prized chicken mushrooms, but she wasn’t going to sell them cheaply to Qi Feng.

"You’ve managed to get your business even into the state-run restaurant, huh? You’re really something." Qi Feng’s eyes nearly popped out. If he didn’t know Xu Mumu was just an ordinary village girl, he’d suspect she had some connections, daring to openly do business with the state-run restaurant.

"It’s okay." Xu Mumu said lightly.

After getting more than twenty yuan from Qi Feng, Xu Mumu headed towards the state-run restaurant with the chicken mushrooms.

The state-run restaurant opened early; Xu Mumu skillfully headed to the back door to get in.

"Mumu, you’re finally here." Master Yang was overjoyed to see Xu Mumu.

"Good morning, Master Yang." Xu Mumu said with a bright smile, then handed over the basket in her hand.

"They’re really fresh, not bad at all. Kid, have you had breakfast? We have porridge and steamed buns here. Your uncle said you work in a shoe factory, have something to eat before going to work." Master Yang looked satisfied at the chicken mushrooms in the basket.

"No need, I had breakfast before coming." Xu Mumu smiled and refused; it was obvious Master Yang wanted to give her free food. People were coming in for breakfast, so if she got caught, reported, it’d be a disaster.

"Alright, then wait a minute, I’ll have someone weigh them." Master Yang didn’t insist. With these mushrooms, the state-run restaurant’s business would be even better, although the restaurant had never done badly.

Xu Mumu nodded and strolled around the kitchen. Master Yang still slipped her a big white steamed bun.

"You’re so thin, my daughter is about your age but much sturdier." Master Yang said with a smile.

"Thank you, Master Yang." Xu Mumu’s mouth twitched, imagining a female version of Master Yang—it sent a shiver down her spine.

Master Yang was chubby and looked gentle, but he was a bit short, and when he smiled, he resembled the Maitreya Buddha.

After getting the money, Xu Mumu didn’t linger; she left the basket there with plans to pick it up in the evening and then headed to the shoe factory munching on the steamed bun.

She wasn’t late arriving; Chen Meili and a few others were there, except for Qin Jie who hadn’t arrived yet.

"Oh dear, it’s time to work again; I haven’t rested enough." Chen Meili stretched and was reluctant to move.

"Dream on about resting enough." A middle-aged woman said with a smile.

"I also want a good rest." Someone else chimed in. Though relations in the office weren’t particularly great, there was no conflict, and interactions were rather bland.

Before long, Qin Jie arrived bustling in with her leather shoes, her steps hurried.

"Mumu, tidy up, follow me to the county government for a meeting later." Qin Jie told Xu Mumu, then began looking for materials in her drawer.

"Got it, Mrs. Qin." Xu Mumu nodded, quickly gathered her things. Last time she had to teach the office staff to make spreadsheets, so she didn’t go to the meeting with Qin Jie, making this her first time going along.

Sitting in the factory’s old car, since coming to this world, it was her first time riding a four-wheel vehicle. The inside was well-kept and looked decent. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Sitting in the car, Qin Jie briefly told Xu Mumu about the upcoming meeting.

Listening to Qin Jie, along with the account books she had read this past week, Xu Mumu had a rough idea of the shoe factory’s situation.

Among the county’s few factories, besides the small furniture factory, the shoe factory ranked at the bottom. It had no good machinery, a small scale, and resources were quite scarce.

Today’s meeting Qin Jie was taking her to was about solving the issue of food shortages.

The shoe factory may not be that big, but food was still insufficient; with over a hundred people, and many families, the factory’s burden was considerable.

With a basic understanding, Xu Mumu had a rough plan in mind; it would depend on Qin Jie’s skill to secure food.

Arriving at the county government, Xu Mumu followed Qin Jie inside. The number of people attending the meeting was quite large, as Qin Jie had briefly mentioned; it was people from various major factories in the county.

"Are you from the shoe factory? Hello, I’m Qiu Lin, Minister Lin’s secretary from the cotton mill." A scholarly-looking man approached Xu Mumu; Qiu Lin had seen Qin Jie a few times, naturally recognizing her.

Qin Jie usually didn’t bring a secretary to meetings, but this time she did.

Following Qin Jie inside, Qiu Lin immediately noticed her. This little girl wasn’t very old and was quite pretty, fitting his preferences, so he came forward to strike up a conversation.

"Hello, I’m Xu Mumu, Director Qin’s secretary. As a new secretary, there’s much I don’t know, so please help point out any mistakes." Xu Mumu smiled at Qiu Lin, intending to build good relationships with these people, as they were potential connections.

"Mr. Xu, you’re too modest. Since we’re more experienced, helping out is only natural." A slightly plump man in a suit smiled, although his smile was somewhat lecherous.
