Chapter 237: Guilty Conscience

After clarifying things with Master Yang and their group, the dishes soon arrived. Master Yang’s cooking skills were excellent, and these dishes looked, smelled, and tasted amazing. Xu Mumu really liked them.

"Secretary Xu, dig in." Secretary Liu, despite feeling pained, warmly invited Xu Mumu to start eating.

"Secretary Liu, you should eat too. These are truly delicious." Xu Mumu smiled at Secretary Liu, implying she noticed his reluctance.

"I’m eating, I’m eating." Secretary Liu replied with a smile and quickly started eating. Even though he was the one treating, he couldn’t let himself lose out and had to eat more.

"Secretary Xu, how do you know Minister Cai?" Secretary Liu asked nonchalantly while eating.

"Oh, that. The dam at our rural reservoir broke. He came down to assess the situation, and I happened to be there, so I met him once." Xu Mumu’s eyes flickered, but she remained calm while speaking.

"I see, you have pretty good luck." Secretary Liu smiled, not entirely believing Xu Mumu’s explanation.

After spending the whole morning learning about her, he felt this girl wasn’t as simple as she seemed and wasn’t easy to handle. So far, he hadn’t gotten much useful information from her.

"Indeed, I’m quite lucky." Xu Mumu smiled.

The two chatted while eating, with Secretary Liu doing most of the questioning. Xu Mumu only needed to answer. If she couldn’t answer, she skillfully changed the subject.

Xu Mumu was quite satisfied with the meal, though when Secretary Liu went to settle the bill, seeing his pained expression nearly twist his face made her feel even better.

When they returned to the footwear factory, it was still early, so Xu Mumu took a short nap at her desk.

When work resumed, Qin Jie inquired about Xu Mumu’s lunch outing.

Xu Mumu didn’t hide anything from Qin Jie about what Secretary Liu asked.

"Well done. I bet Secretary Liu won’t want to invite you to lunch again." Qin Jie laughed.

"Isn’t that just perfect?" Xu Mumu laughed too.

"By the way, are you going to do the same with Secretary Qiu?" Qin Jie asked, looking at Xu Mumu.

"We’ll see when the time comes." Xu Mumu smirked, hoping Secretary Qiu knew better.

Qin Jie nodded, reassured that Xu Mumu had it under control, and didn’t press further.

With Qin Jie’s support, working days for Xu Mumu were quite relaxed.

Soon, it was the end of the month, and Xu Mumu went to collect her salary with Chen Meili.

She received over thirty yuan, with an extra ten yuan as a bonus from Qin Jie, along with some coupons. This being her first time earning coupons, Xu Mumu felt quite pleased.

With her salary in hand and a couple of days off, Xu Mumu packed her things, ready to go home.

But shortly after leaving, she ran into Qiu Lin.

"Secretary Xu, long time no see." Qiu Lin greeted Xu Mumu with a gentle smile.

"Secretary Qiu, where are you headed?" Xu Mumu smiled faintly.

"Just got back from a rural visit. Oh, I promised to treat you to a meal last time. How about today?" Qiu Lin’s smile grew friendlier as he looked at Xu Mumu.

Xu Mumu was attractive and employed, and since Qiu Lin wasn’t married, he naturally had an interest in her.

"Shouldn’t you go back and drop off your documents first?" Noting Qiu Lin’s files, Xu Mumu appeared very understanding.

"They’re not important documents, no big deal to carry them around." Qiu Lin smiled, valuing the date over the files.

"Alright then, let’s go. I was just heading to the state-run restaurant." Xu Mumu said with a smile, planning to buy some treats for her family.

"Mumu." As they were about to head to the state-run restaurant, Xu Mumu heard someone calling her from behind.

She turned around and was a bit flustered to see Yin Yang.

"Yin Yang, why are you in town?" Slightly flustered, Xu Mumu couldn’t quite meet Yin Yang’s bright eyes.

"I’m here to get medicine for my grandpa. What about you two?" Yin Yang pursed his lips, looking a bit hurt, puzzled by who this person was. He had seen Xu Mumu smiling brightly at this guy as soon as he arrived.

Feeling a pang of jealousy rising inside, he couldn’t help but step in.

"This is Secretary Qiu from the cotton mill. Secretary Qiu, this is my friend Yin Yang." Xu Mumu introduced them with a smile, "We’re going to the state-run restaurant for a meal. Would you like to join us? It’s my treat. I just got paid today."

Looking at Yin Yang, Xu Mumu hoped he wouldn’t misunderstand, intending to placate him first.

"Your friend is my friend, let’s go. My treat." Qiu Lin regarded Yin Yang. With a man’s intuition, he was certain this guy had feelings for Xu Mumu and had been hostile since he arrived.

"Hello, Secretary Qiu." Yin Yang sized up Qiu Lin, finding him average-looking, older, and not as handsome as himself, so he slightly lowered his guard.

"Are you from the same brigade as Secretary Xu?" Qiu Lin held a friendly demeanor towards Yin Yang, impressed by his looks. He had never seen such a handsome man before; his attire wasn’t something just anyone could afford, making him a formidable rival if he pursued Xu Mumu.

"Yes, Yin Yang is a young intellectual from our brigade." Xu Mumu said with a smile.

"Mumu, if you’re going to eat, it would be intrusive for me to join. How about I wait for you there, and we can head back together later?" Yin Yang hesitated, not wanting Xu Mumu to dine with this person.

"That’s not okay; you should come too." Xu Mumu looked at Yin Yang with a bit of exasperation as he pulled a stunt again.

"Alright then."

Xu Mumu couldn’t help but twitch her mouth; this guy always had to play hard to get.

What was a duo turned into a trio, with Yin Yang constantly keeping Xu Mumu engaged in conversation, leaving Qiu Lin no room to speak with her.

Qiu Lin’s face faltered slightly; this guy was so annoying, yet Xu Mumu didn’t seem to notice his unease. Every opportunity Yin Yang seized to divert Xu Mumu’s attention was timed perfectly, much to his annoyance.

At the state-run restaurant, Yin Yang immediately sat next to Xu Mumu. On her other side were some things he had bought, taking up the space, so Qiu Lin had to sit across from Xu Mumu.

"Mumu, look at the menu and see what you like." Yin Yang handed the menu to Xu Mumu.

Xu Mumu gave a faint smile at Yin Yang, knowing this trip had utterly ignored Qiu Lin, which probably offended him too. She casually picked out two dishes.

Yin Yang took back the menu without hesitation and ordered two big and relatively expensive dishes.
