Chapter 255: Well Done

After the college entrance exams, the days felt extremely torturous for the people in the brigade.

The results hadn’t come out yet, but the university applications had to be filled out first. Xu Mumu and Yin Yang both unhesitatingly chose Huaxia University, while Xu Minghui was a bit troubled. Xu Mumu roughly had an idea of Xu Minghui’s scores.

After discussing with Xu Minghui, Xu Mumu still applied for a local provincial university for him, just an ordinary university. With Xu Minghui’s score, it was only a bit above the passing line, and getting accepted into a good school wouldn’t be so easy.

Having applied for Huaxia University, Huo Qingze naturally also listed this school, and all his other choices were schools in the Imperial City. He was determined to go back to the Imperial City, not letting his father and stepmother off the hook.

On Xu Xue’s side, she was much more cautious. Although she felt she did well, she wasn’t as confident as Xu Mumu and didn’t think she could surpass Xu Mumu. When she learned Huo Qingze had applied for Huaxia University, she wanted to disregard everything and choose Huaxia University herself, but she didn’t dare. She couldn’t afford to gamble.

If she failed to get accepted, it would become the biggest joke.

After much hesitation, she chose the best local university after all.

Once the applications were submitted, the whole brigade seemed largely uninterested in the matter anymore, as the New Year was approaching and everyone was busy preparing New Year goods.

The intellectual youth were particularly concerned about the exam results, so none went home for the New Year this year but stayed in the brigade waiting for their scores.

Xu Mumu and Yin Yang kept running to the small town, looking for a suitable house, but unfortunately hadn’t found one so far; the houses were always inappropriate.

"Mumu, should we go check out the provincial city?" Yin Yang looked expectantly at Xu Mumu. If they went to the provincial city, it wouldn’t be possible for just him and Xu Mumu to return the same day, and the thought excited him so much he almost fainted.

"Let’s wait until after the New Year; it’s nearly New Year now, and prices might unpredictably go up." Xu Mumu shook her head, with just about ten days until New Year; a few days wouldn’t make much difference, and they might as well rest properly.

Back home, she would see her parents looking devastated every day. It seemed her brother was stirring up quite the trouble.

But these two held on, so Xu Mumu couldn’t be bothered to interfere; better to let her brother play the bad guy.

This year, the family bought a lot of meat to cure, and plenty of sausages, not quite as good as last year’s wild boar slaughter early on, but already quite nice.

"Mumu’s back. Were you tired from going to the county today?" Madam Chen asked gently.

"Not tired, just didn’t find a suitable house," Xu Mumu replied helplessly.

"If you didn’t find one, that’s fine. We have places to live," Madam Chen said with a smile.

"Grandma, after the New Year, I plan to check out the provincial city. It’s bigger, definitely easier to find a place than in the county." Xu Mumu shook her head with a smile, not giving her dad any excuse to slack; she had to push him to make progress.

"Provincial city?? Mumu, don’t. We might not afford a place in the county, let alone the provincial city..." Madam Chen took a deep breath. Though she didn’t finish her sentence, her meaning was clear; she didn’t want the family to live on debts while maintaining a facade of prosperity.

"Grandma, I’m really not short on money." Xu Mumu said with a mix as she had already collected payment from Huo Qingze twice, her little purse bulging; she was now a little wealthy lady.

She planned to contribute some for the house, determined to make her parents bring out their money.

"Couldn’t you make your dad earn the money himself? Keep yours as your dowry. With the background of the Yin Yang family, although it’s just him and his grandfather, with money in your hand, you won’t have to worry about being looked down upon after marriage." Madam Chen seriously said to Xu Mumu.

"Grandma, marriage is far off, at least until I graduate college. There are still several years. I have ways to make money." Xu Mumu felt warm in her heart; her grandma was really kind.

"You just care too much about your parents," Madam Chen said helplessly.

"They treat me well, so of course I will be filial to them, just like to you, Grandma," Xu Mumu sat by Madam Chen’s side.

"You need to be cautious and not let them become too demanding," Madam Chen shook her head.

"Don’t worry, Grandma. I know my limits," Xu Mumu smiled as she spoke. She’s no child and knows that her parents can’t be spoiled. With money, they might stray, so it’s better for them to stay poor.

"Alright, it’s fine if you’re aware," Madam Chen could say no more; she could only spoil her granddaughter. Anyway, with her and Old Xu keeping an eye on their son, no big trouble would arise.

The two didn’t talk about it anymore, instead preparing dinner.

"Grandma, did Third Uncle and his family say they’ll come back for the reunion this year?" Xu Mumu suddenly recalled her Third Uncle at the shoe factory. Ever since facing a lot of embarrassment back home, the couple hadn’t contacted people here and hadn’t asked about the elderly couple either.

"They didn’t say, better not think about them. A bunch of heartless people," as Madam Chen mentioned Xu He, a look of sadness flashed before turning into anger.

"Never mind if they don’t come back," Xu Mumu said indifferently, thinking it might cause more conflicts, especially between her mother and third aunt.

"I’m treating it like I never had this son," Madam Chen said harshly.

Xu Mumu didn’t say a word; she wouldn’t ask the third family to come back for the reunion just to please her grandparents, as that might only result in arguments.

But Madam Chen’s downcast mood soon lifted as Xu Minglei brought over the little brother; the little guy was the joy of the household.

Xu Mumu gave a thumbs-up to her little brother, signifying a great job.

Xu Minglei winked at his sister; he just didn’t want to hold the little brother anymore, as the little guy was too energetic, disliked being held constantly, and wanted to walk on his own. But his legs couldn’t yet support his body; he needed someone to hold him.

By now, he had no temper left for the little brother; he wasn’t cute at all.

Seeing the look of disdain in Xu Minglei’s eyes towards the little brother, the corner of Xu Mumu’s mouth twitched; the small brat indeed was rather troublesome.

"Grandma, you play with the little brother, I’ll get something for Grandpa," Xu Minglei quickly handed over the small bundle to Grandma, then ran away swiftly.

Old Xu was busy in the private plot, and Xu Minglei hurried over to help.

"This little rascal, dear grandson, have you been bothering your second brother?" Madam Chen pinched the little guy’s nose, looking at him dotingly.

"Grandma, let me hold him," Xu Mumu said with a smile, taking the little brother from Grandma’s arms, then holding him while walking on the ground.
