Chapter 304: Dispelling the Idea

After breakfast, my little brother was clamoring to go out, so Xu Mumu voluntarily took up the task of taking him out to play, and Yin Yang went along too.

The neighborhood here hadn’t changed much from before, it still looked the same. The little guy was being led by Xu Mumu, always trying to break free and run away.

"Where do you want to go?" Xu Mumu asked with a headache. Unfortunately, the little guy didn’t understand her words and directly dragged Xu Mumu forward.

Dragged by the little guy, they arrived at a shabby house where several elderly women were chatting.

"Ah, Fengfeng is here." One of the women saw little Xu Mingfeng and cheerfully waved him over.

"Hello, everyone." Xu Mumu greeted the people. These must be the people with whom Grandma usually brings the little guy to play.

"What a pretty young lady you are, you must be Madam Chen’s granddaughter." The others also looked over curiously. Although they hadn’t met Xu Mumu, her name was well-known; every time Madam Chen came to chat, she would brag about her granddaughter.

Initially curious and envious, now it’s just become the norm.

Seeing Xu Mumu holding Xu Mingfeng’s hand now, this little guy isn’t shy but doesn’t warm up to just anyone. His closeness to this girl clearly marks her as family.

"I’m Xu Mumu, hello, grannies." Xu Mumu greeted them with a bright smile. These people seemed to speak gently, not the mean kind, a testament to Grandma’s good judgment.

If they were the gossiping annoying type, Madam Chen wouldn’t associate with them.

The little guy, seeing familiar faces, happily ran back and forth in front of them.

Xu Mumu and the others stayed and chatted with the people for a while. Xu Mumu was almost overwhelmed as these people were not only immensely curious about her but also about Yin Yang; they were just shy of asking about their ancestors.

"Those people are just too enthusiastic." Xu Mumu wiped the sweat off her forehead, it was only summer, and she already felt hot.

"Here, wipe it off." Yin Yang handed a handkerchief to Xu Mumu.

"These people are terrifying." Xu Mumu said with a headache.

After touring around outside with her little brother for a bit, they returned, even though the little guy was still quite reluctant.

"Why are you back so soon?" Madam Chen had just finished tidying up the house when she saw Xu Mumu and the others return.

"It’s not much fun outside." Xu Mumu said calmly.

"Then play at home. Mumu, come over here, help me understand what this means." Li Caixia waved a textbook and gestured for Xu Mumu to come over.

Xu Mumu went over and glanced at what her mom was learning; she had learned quite a bit, even taking notes.

Even though Xu Minghui was there to teach her, she didn’t absorb much of it.

Xu Mumu was more patient, carefully explaining until she truly understood before stopping.

"My daughter is still the best, look at how you teach, I don’t understand a word." Li Caixia just praised Xu Mumu and then turned to slap Xu Minghui on the back.

"You just weren’t listening closely, how can you blame me for that?" Xu Minghui was speechless; with so many kids at home, he’s fallen out of favor.

"It’s clearly because you teach poorly." Li Caixia glared at her son.

The house was lively, and once Xu Mumu felt they had learned enough, she brought up the idea of installing a telephone with Li Caixia and Xu Hai.

As soon as Xu Mumu brought it up, Li Caixia and Xu Hai fell silent. A telephone was something the family really couldn’t afford to install.

"Sweetheart, we don’t have the money." Li Caixia said with a headache.

"You can save up slowly if you’re short on money. I’ll contribute a part, don’t you want to talk to me every day on the phone?" Xu Mumu said with a smile, having anticipated that they might refuse.

"Sweetheart, saving for a year wouldn’t even be enough." Xu Hai gulped, knowing his daughter has expensive tastes. It’s fortunate she has money on her own, but still, it pains them as they have none, and when they do have a little saved, she’s on it. It’s really hard to save any money.

"Exactly, we have to save up for your brother’s wedding too." Li Caixia immediately nodded.

"My brother doesn’t even have a girlfriend; the wedding is a long way off." Xu Mumu glanced at her brother.

"And what about you? We have to save for your dowry too, no phones can’t be installed." Li Caixia thought about the money needed everywhere and her heart ached.

"Mom, I don’t plan to get married anytime soon." Xu Mumu said helplessly. She had a large sum of money at hand, which she couldn’t just leave idle, might as well use it.

"Still, it won’t work. If we install a phone, we’ll have no money left. What if something happens at home and we have no money?" Li Caixia and Xu Hai firmly resisted.

"Mumu, auntie has a point. Things like phones can wait." Yin Yang pondered and then tried to dissuade Xu Mumu a bit, as Xu Hai and Li Caixia didn’t have much money; installing a phone would mostly have to be covered by Xu Mumu, and she wouldn’t agree if he offered to pay.

The Xu Family has a kid, two elderly people, and several students. It’s crucial to keep some money on hand.

"Alright then, Dad, let’s get a phone next year, how about that." Xu Mumu said reluctantly. Even if they don’t get a phone now, they should have a goal, can’t just let them be slackers.

"We’ll talk about it next year; who knows, we might not even save enough then."

"Then you all need to work hard." Xu Mumu glanced at her dad. He’s the kind who is content with little money. The most ambitious ones in the family are her mom and brother.

"Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to watch your dad and have him work hard." Li Caixia said with a cheerful smile, relieved that her daughter was no longer insisting, and her purse was safe.

"Why can’t you work hard and have me do it?" Xu Hai lay on the table, reluctant to move. He regretted it; coming to the city was just too exhausting.

"You’re the head of the family, it’s your job to support everyone." Li Caixia said confidently.

"Fine, fine, fine." Xu Hai said weakly, looking at the whole family and feeling downhearted. If he had known earlier, he would only have had one child, having a daughter would be enough, daughters are more promising, so even moving to the city wouldn’t be so hard.

Xu Mumu found the couple amusing, feeling sympathy for her dad. Although they couldn’t get a phone immediately, she wasn’t too disappointed; waiting a bit more would be fine. When her parents have more money, she could give it to them later.

"You’re such grown-ups but still let the kids watch the drama, aren’t you ashamed?" Madam Chen glared at the couple with eyes full of disdain.
