Chapter 340: Helping Out at Liu Laizi’s House

Everyone else obediently shut their mouths; Madam Chen’s outburst was really frightening, better not to provoke her.

Old Xu actually knew the grudges involved, but didn’t see the need to tell the younger ones. These were after all trivial old matters, not important at all.

When Xu He and his brother arrived at Liu Laizi’s house, a few people were already helping to clean up.

Liu Laizi’s house had collapsed, and Old Lady Xin had been dragged out from the wreckage, covered in mud and some rotten straw. She looked so frail, as if she could collapse at any moment. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"Why are you still stunned, quickly send her to the clinic." Zhao Guodong saw the two people who dragged Old Lady Xin out still in shock when he arrived with Xu He and his brother.

"My house, my food, captain, quickly help me dig out my grain, don’t let it get ruined." When Old Lady Xin saw Zhao Guodong, she immediately perked up a bit, tears streaming down. There was no money at home, and only a little grain; now that the house had collapsed, how could they possibly live like this?

"Got it, got it, quickly go to the clinic. What if you fall ill?" Zhao Guodong was utterly frustrated.

"Where’s Liu Laizi?" After Old Lady Xin was sent to the clinic, as Zhao Guodong helped tidy up the place, he realized that he’d been there for a while and hadn’t seen Liu Laizi at all.

"Liu Laizi hasn’t returned. I’m the one who notified you." Zhao Ming said helplessly. He lived not far from Liu Laizi’s house and was the first to notice the house collapse.

Zhao Guodong felt utterly disgusted; dammit, what kind of person was Liu Laizi, letting his own mother’s life or death go unattended while fooling around elsewhere.

Good thing Liu Laizi wasn’t his son, otherwise he’d be the first to beat him to death.

Despite Liu Laizi not returning, a few people still helped to clean up his house. There wasn’t much usable; the bedding was filthy, pots and pans mostly broken, only the iron pot was usable, while the earthen bowls had long been smashed by collapsing beams.

As for the grain at Liu Laizi’s house, apart from two bags of sweet potatoes, there was only some cornmeal and bran left, most of which had been soaked. The remaining stuff was wet and probably inedible even after drying.

Zhao Guodong sighed lightly looking at the things salvaged. Damn, what kind of situation was this? Was the team really supposed to support Liu Laizi and his mother? Clearly impossible, wasn’t it? In her youth, Old Lady Xin offended quite a few people, and Liu Laizi was who he was; no one was willing to help them, leaving it to him, the team leader.

Zhao Guodong felt utterly exhausted; why was being the team leader so difficult? The two little bags of sweet potatoes probably wouldn’t last long either, and eventually, he would have to bring over a bag of sweet potatoes from home, which would not escape his wife’s complaints.

As for Liu Laizi’s house, they’d have to rebuild it, and it was uncertain how many people the team could call to help.

Once Liu Laizi returned, he would definitely have the team take turns offering him advice. They couldn’t let Liu Laizi live like this any longer; the team had no obligation to support them.

When Xu He and the others returned, Qian Ying and Sun Huiping had already heated water and left it in the kitchen. The brothers were filthy all over, which particularly displeased Madam Chen.

"Did that old hag die?" Madam Chen intended to revel in Old Lady Xin’s misfortune. If she didn’t die, once the rain stopped, she’d take her grandson over every day to make fun of her.

"No, she’s been sent to the clinic now, but her house collapsed. They had a hard enough time already, and now it’ll be even harder," Xu He, the kindest in the Old Xu Family, spoke up.

"Get out of here; it’s better if they can’t get by." Madam Chen swung a broom at Xu He, insisting that this foolish son couldn’t have come from her. Looking back, she thought she should have drowned him in the urinal when he was born to avoid all her current frustrations. To her, he seemed born solely to torment her.

Xu Mumu’s mouth twitched. The Liu Laizi household wouldn’t necessarily fall apart. Zhao Guodong, the team leader, would provide some relief when he couldn’t bear it. Zhao was a genuinely good leader, which was why he was so respected and remained the team leader of the Red River Team.

"Mom, the team leader wants us to go help rebuild Liu Laizi’s house once the weather clears. The walls have all collapsed," Xu Po said, already feeling a headache coming on. He didn’t really want to help, but since the team leader personally asked, he couldn’t avoid getting involved with Liu Laizi.

"Why go? We’re not going. Once the weather clears, go up the mountain to gather firewood. Our house leaks when it rains too, get something to fix our roof," Madam Chen rolled her eyes. Helping out Liu Laizi? Dream on.

"Mom, our roof is fine," Xu He replied straightforwardly. At least the second house only had a small leak easily fixed with a basin, needing just a few bundles of straw to patch it up.

"I said it’s broken, so it’s broken," Madam Chen swept at Xu He again, utterly infuriated.

"Yes, mom’s right. Our roof is leaking too, definitely needs fixing. Even the beams are rotting a bit and need replacing," Xu Po agreed with his mother. He wasn’t planning to move to the city; they didn’t have that much money and probably couldn’t find work there. Assuming no unforeseen events, he hoped to live in this house till he was old, so he needed to take care of it.

Xu Xue watched silently; seeing her grandma hit her dad was unpleasant, but she remained quiet. If a bit of hitting and scolding might wake her dad up, as she hoped, she’d be all for it.

The beams had been used for decades and really did need replacing. This was the perfect opportunity.

Madam Chen was very pleased with her fourth child’s sensibility. That foolish son was hopeless, living in vain, not even as good as those two little girls. She couldn’t even be bothered to deal with him anymore.

Old Xu remained silent on the side; after all, Madam Chen made many of the household decisions.

Discussing how to arrange things, Xu Mumu had no objection. Doing volunteer work for others was pointless when there was plenty of work needing doing at home.

The heavy rain lasted three to four days. Liu Laizi hadn’t returned during this time, leaving Old Lady Xin alone at the clinic. If not for Madam Chu’s kindness in giving her food daily, who knows how she would’ve managed?

The house had collapsed, but Old Lady Xin was luckily only slightly injured with some bruising and a cold; nothing too serious.
