Chapter 36: Separation (Part 1)

Xu Mumu thought this matter would drag on for a while, but unexpectedly, the next morning, just as Xu Mumu was preparing to take a few kids for some exercise, Old Xu had already sent Xu Hai to invite the village leader and a few of the senior members of the community.

"Sis, are we going to split the family?" Xu Minglei leaned over to Xu Mumu, saying excitedly.

"Little rascal, is that any of your business?" Xu Mumu raised her eyebrows. It seemed like everyone in the family hoped for the division.

Xu Mumu’s gaze fell inside the main room, where grandma and grandpa probably felt the worst about it; after all, their sons were estranged.

Xu Mumu started teaching the small ones and dragged Xu Minghui along, believing that learning more is never wrong.

However, her brother’s lazy demeanor was somewhat irritating to her eyes.

"Elder sister, aunt and uncle are back." Xu Jiaojiao said excitedly.

Xu Qingxing was back with her family. She had returned alone the day before, knowing that something big was going to happen at home. However, the eldest aunt, who lived farther away, couldn’t make it back in time.

"Aunt, uncle." The children all greeted obediently, and Xu Mumu greeted them too. This aunt lived the best life among the brothers. Uncle Qin Liang worked in a state-run restaurant, in the kitchen, living quite comfortably.

"Mumu, come, take these sugar cakes and share them with your siblings." Xu Qingxing handed over the sugar cakes she had.

"Thank you, aunt." Xu Mumu nodded with a smile.

"Jiaojiao, can you help me look after your little brother?" Xu Qingxing said gently, placing her son in front of Xu Jiaojiao, feeling more assured with her neice than with Xu Mumu, knowing Mumu’s temperament well.

"Don’t worry, aunt, I’ll definitely take good care of Dongdong." The little girl said dutifully, as Qin Dongdong, only four years old, was quiet and well-behaved, and Xu Jiaojiao liked this brother a lot.

Xu Qingxing patted Xu Jiaojiao’s hair and, with Qin Liang, went into the main room.

Xu Mumu divided the sugar cakes; Xu Qingxing hadn’t brought much, and after dividing them among the children, there were only two pieces left. Xu Mumu smiled slightly - as she expected, it was always like this. Each time, aunt would bring back a little extra, leaving her with the remaining pieces after distribution.

"There are two more pieces here. I’ll assign you some homework later, and whoever gets the most correct answers gets to eat these two sugar cakes." Xu Mumu waved the two sugar cakes in her hand.

As expected, the children had been somewhat distracted before, but now their attention was completely focused on the lessons Xu Mumu was giving.

Soon enough, the village leader and his group arrived.

The village leader was Zhao Qing’s father, Zhao Guodong, who had come with a few of the senior members of the village to witness the family division.

Zhao Guodong looked at Xu Mumu reading with her younger siblings, showing a bit of surprise. Previously, he had his doubts about the good reputation Xu Mumu had outside, but now he felt this was a good girl, sensible too, explaining his son’s constant thoughts about her.

"Mr. Zhao, you’re here." Xu Mumu greeted them with a smile, and the elders all called out in acknowledgment.

"Yes, very good, very good, Mumu is a good girl." Zhao Guodong said with a smile.

"Where are your grandpa and grandma?" Zhao Guodong asked.

"Grandpa and grandma are in the main room. Mr. Zhao, you can go straight in, I’ll take my siblings to the room to study." Xu Mumu showed them the way.

As Zhao Guodong and his group entered the main room, Xu Mumu took the children to her room.

"Dongdong, take off your shoes and play on the bed, alright?" Xu Mumu gently told Qin Dongdong.

"Okay." The little guy said obediently, not causing any trouble, easy to manage.

Xu Mumu took off the little guy’s shoes and put him on the bed to play by himself.

Xu Mumu moved the nearby cabinet over for the children to use when writing.

In the main room, the atmosphere was tense, as Zhao Guodong surveyed the Old Xu Family members, finally focusing on Old Xu, "Mr. Xu, why are you considering dividing the family?"

"It’s all because of Laosan’s troublemaking." Xu Hai scoffed, looking down on the third son’s family, feeling grateful for listening to his daughter’s advice back then; otherwise, his family would be in debt too.

"Brother, just say less." Xu Qingxing was extremely frustrated; outsiders were present, yet her brother continued while their third brother and sister-in-law’s faces looked so upset.

"Guodong, as you can see, the kids have all grown up, the branches are spreading out, let’s just divide." Old Xu said tiredly. Ever since the thought of family division last night, he couldn’t sleep well.

"Dad, are you alright?" Xu Jiang looked at Old Xu with concern; the matter of dividing the family made Old Xu look much older.

He dared not discuss not dividing the family; in this household, his wife and daughters were all being wronged, and they wanted to divide the family the most, so he couldn’t just think about his father’s situation and ignore his own family’s needs.

Old Xu waved his hand, looking at his sons, feeling somewhat disappointed; they all wanted to divide the family. With everyone scattered, there seemed to be no point in holding on.

"Let’s start directly. The family has four sons. My wife and I will go with the eldest. There are 430 yuan in the family, divided into five parts. My wife and I will take one part, and you brothers will each take one. The house is an old one; the side you’re living on will be divided among you. When Laosan got married, it was agreed he’d live with the Lin Family and support Old Lin, so no house for you. The grain and other supplies will also be divided among five." Old Xu said, being as fair as he could.

It didn’t take long for Old Xu to arrange the things to be divided in the family.

"Dad, I’m the eldest, and Minghui is getting married. Our side should get more." Xu Hai was the first to voice dissatisfaction with Old Xu’s method of dividing the family.

"Big brother, you’re not the only one with a son." Xu He disagreed, as there had been talk about getting 200 yuan to help with his debt, but now with the division, he’d only get a few dozen yuan, and the grain wouldn’t sell for much money either.

"How is that possible? Minghui is the eldest grandson." Xu Hai angrily looked at Xu Laosan.

"Enough, no more arguing, it will be divided this way." Old Xu waved his hand weakly, feeling it was the last thing he could do for his sons. "Old Xu said tiredly.

"Mr. Xu, what about the matter of nursing care?" Zhao Guodong wrote things down while asking, wondering if the eldest brother would take care of the elder Xu couple while the other brothers wouldn’t contribute.
