Chapter 49: County Factories Overview

"Aren’t you preparing for the exams too? Eat more to get some nutrition." Madam Chen said with a smile.

The pig offal has run out these past few days, so when cooking, she also cut a few slices of meat into the dishes, and the meat-enhanced flavor made the dishes much better than before.

"Thanks, grandma." Seeing Madam Chen’s eager eyes, Xu Mumu still ate the egg.

The living conditions of this family haven’t improved much, just a few more slices of meat in the dishes. Although everyone at home seems quite content, Xu Mumu is not satisfied.

She knows the direction of the future and knows which way to head in life. Even though she doesn’t know how to do business, isn’t there someone at home who does? At least Xu Mumu feels that Xu Minghui and her parents have this ability.

Doing business can’t be rushed; it has to wait until the current events are over, which is soon. It’s already 1976, and in two or three more years, buying and selling will be free, then will be the best chance.

Now, thinking about making money, Xu Mumu almost has a plan.

Her brother is too idle. Over this period, she has been cramming a lot of knowledge into him as if force-feeding ducks.

Doing this naturally has her purpose; she plans to send her brother to the factory to get some training, at least to learn some skills.

But in the county’s factories, the only person she knows is Du Yu. If she goes through Du Yu to get into the shoe factory, Xu Mumu isn’t planning to do that. Favors are something that should be used at critical times.

For Xu Minghui, she plans to wait until there’s some free time, then wander around the factories in the county to see where there are job openings, and then send Xu Minghui over. As long as he passes the exam and gets into the factory, even as a temporary worker, Mumu believes that with Xu Minghui’s abilities, he’ll definitely rise up.

On Saturday, after explaining some key points to Du Yu, she didn’t continue.

"Why did you stop?" He was eagerly listening when Mumu suddenly stopped. The closer it gets to the mid-term exams, the more anxious he becomes, wanting to see how much he has improved.

"I’ve covered almost everything that needed to be covered. The rest is up to your memory and understanding." Xu Mumu calmly said, "Oh, by the way, let me ask you something."

"What is it?" Du Yu put down the notebook in his hand and looked at Mumu curiously.

"What factories are there nearby that are hiring?"

"Why? Are you looking to work in a factory? No way, it’s much more comfortable to study, working in a factory is tiring." Du Yu’s eyebrows twitched, looking at Mumu, wondering if she’s having second thoughts. His dad did say that policies might change in the next few years, and he still wants Mumu to go for the college entrance exam.

"Not for me, I see my brother being too idle and plan to send him to work in a factory." Mumu said calmly. After all, at home, Xu Minghui is always slacking off; he might as well be sent to the factory.

"If it’s for your brother, I could speak to my dad, and he can just come to the shoe factory, enter any department easily." Du Yu sighed in relief and enthusiastically started recommending to Mumu.

"No need, I don’t want my brother to climb the ladder using our connections. I plan to put him in a new place where he can really hone his skills." Mumu stated calmly.

"Tsk tsk, you’re so hard on your brother, does he know?" Du Yu burst into laughter, indeed, Mumu is still the same Mumu.

"Just don’t tell him, right? And tell me about the situation in the county’s factories." Mumu remained calm, believing that even if Minghui knows it’s a trap, he’ll still fall into it.

"In our county, there are only five factories in total: our shoe factory, and others like the cotton spinning factory, the brick factory, the steel factory, and a small furniture factory."

"The shoe factory doesn’t need people for now, my dad is even planning on laying off some, the factory’s efficiency isn’t great, the steel factory is big and hard to get into, but they are hiring."

"The cotton spinning factory hires more women, for men they want movers, and I haven’t heard of them hiring lately. I’ll ask my mom tonight, she would know."

"As for the furniture factory, it’s just a small one and isn’t hiring, neither is the brick factory."

"So, meaning the only factory to possibly get into is the steel factory and maybe the cotton spinning factory." Mumu thought for a moment, silently calculating in her mind.

"My grandaunt works at the cotton spinning factory, I’ll have my mom ask about it for you." Du Yu said with a grin.

"Alright, I’ll trouble you then." Mumu said with a smile; compared to the steel factory, the cotton spinning factory would surely be less tiring to work at.

According to Mumu’s plan, it seems better to choose the cotton spinning factory, the work is relatively easier, and if he can be transferred to the sales department, that would be even better.

The steel factory would be laborious, though the pay is higher, the entry threshold is also higher.

"No worries, given our relationship, my mom would be happy to help." Du Yu patted Mumu’s shoulder, actually feeling quite happy that Mumu asked him for help. At least this makes their relationship even better.

Even though he has moved on from liking Mumu, he has few friends and wants to be friends with her.

Mumu felt a little embarrassed inside; this matter really needed Du Yu’s help, his family is in the county and knows more about the situation than she does.

Used to relying on herself for everything in the post-apocalyptic world, suddenly needing others’ help feels a bit uncomfortable for Mumu.

On the way back, Mumu didn’t mention finding a job for Minghui in the county; she just listened to him talk about what happened today.

In the afternoon, when Minghui went up the mountain, he caught a rabbit in a trap, and when he came to pick Mumu up, he sold the rabbit.

"Brother, next time we catch any game, let’s keep it for ourselves." Mumu said to Minghui.

"There’s still meat at home, it’s better to exchange it for money." Minghui said with a smile, having secretly saved two dollars while the rest could be kept by mom.

"Eventually the meat at home will run out." Mumu pursed her lips slightly; Li Caixia and Madam Chen are both reluctant to put meat in the dishes when cooking, only a few slices are added each time, and each person getting two slices is considered very good. It’s all because of poverty.

"Don’t worry, I know, as it gets warmer, in a few days, I’ll catch some fish to make fish soup." Minghui patted Mumu’s head, realizing that his sister also considers the family’s well-being.
