70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 54: Going Fishing After the Flood
Xu Mumu quickly found she couldn’t worry about the matters at home; the upcoming exams were waiting for her.
Though she’d already gone through high school once, she couldn’t guarantee she’d know everything. The exam questions usually focused on topics she was prone to make mistakes on.
After three days of exams, Xu Mumu noticed that her classmates were all deflated, their spirits low. She didn’t know how hard the previous exams were, but she found them quite smooth to handle.
"Mumu, two questions from the error book you showed me yesterday came up in the exam," Du Yu said excitedly. In the class, Du Yu was the only one with such high spirits.
He usually struggled with many questions, but this time he encountered familiar ones that he had only just memorized. How could he not be excited?
"Really? That’s great! Looks like you did well this time," Xu Mumu replied with a smile.
"I guess so," Du Yu said hesitantly, though he certainly had improved a bit.
"Mumu, I heard there’s a river near your village. My cousin and his friends plan to go fishing. Can they go fishing and have some fun in your area?" Du Yu shifted the topic, not wanting to dwell on the disheartening subject of studies anymore.
"Yes, there’s a river. I’ll ask Qing later; his dad is the team leader. If the leader doesn’t object, they can go," Xu Mumu said, knowing full well there was indeed a river, where the original owner drowned.
The original owner just didn’t stand firm, and Xu Xue didn’t hold on. Although it wasn’t Xu Xue’s fault, Xu Mumu still felt conflicted about Xu Xue and was unsure how to handle the matter.
"Alright, if it’s possible, I can come and play with you then," Du Yu said, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Xu Mumu.
"That river is quite deep, and I fell into the water before; it’s dangerous," Xu Mumu said seriously.
"No worries; my cousin and I can swim," Du Yu responded nonchalantly, though he was rather curious about Xu Mumu’s home.
Xu Mumu didn’t say much. As long as they didn’t jump into the water to play, it wasn’t too dangerous. But with the weather getting warmer and them being boys, she found it hard to believe they wouldn’t jump in for a swim.
Remembering the news she’d seen in a past life, many of those who drowned while swimming were good swimmers.
But things shouldn’t always be viewed pessimistically; perhaps they wouldn’t like swimming.
The river outside the team area connected to a reservoir. This time, they were also digging paddy fields, and the reservoir was releasing water, making the flow relatively calm, but the river was deep. Stones on the side were submerged, with the water level only half a meter from the bank.
With the reservoir releasing water, there were bound to be plenty of fish.
Thinking about this, Xu Mumu planned to check out the riverside in the evening to see if she could catch some fish to improve their meals.
Xu Mumu wasn’t patient enough for fishing, but her brother was an expert at catching fish. As for herself, she didn’t know if she could spear fish with a wooden fork.
"Mumu, Mumu, what are you thinking about, zoning out?" Xue Yan’s voice snapped Xu Mumu out of her thoughts.
"Ah?! It’s nothing, just some things on my mind. What’s up?" Xu Mumu asked curiously.
"Nothing, I just thought you might be worrying about the exams," Xue Yan said cautiously. Earlier, Xiao Mengqin and her few friends walked by and smiled provocatively at Xu Mumu, and she worried that Xu Mumu was affected by Xiao Mengqin.
Only heavens knew, Xu Mumu hadn’t even noticed Xiao Mengqin. She was thinking about improving their meals; she didn’t have time to focus on Xiao Mengqin.
At home, they kept eating coarse grain pancakes, or messy wild vegetable porridge, and occasionally she could have an egg. Xu Mumu really wanted to improve their meals.
"Mumu, I believe you can definitely top Xiao Mengqin in the exams," Du Yu said earnestly.
"Yes, yes, I believe in you too," Xue Yan nodded firmly, her bun-like face standing unwaveringly by Xu Mumu’s side.
"Even if you don’t, I’ll move to the back to sit with you," Du Yu said, patting Xu Mumu’s shoulder, appearing like a close buddy.
"Me too," Xue Yan glared at Du Yu. Why was this guy so annoying, stealing all the words she wanted to say?
Xu Mumu facepalmed, what did these two mean, was this their way of showing trust?
If they weren’t her friends, she would have wanted to give them a good beating.
After school in the evening, Xu Mumu asked Zhao Qing about whether they could fish by the river.
"Probably, I’ll ask my dad when I get back," Zhao Qing said hesitantly. Usually, there were small fish in the river caught by village kids. With the reservoir releasing water, there would surely be more fish. It was something he needed to check with his dad.
"Okay, it’s just Du Yu’s cousin, likely with a few others. Ask Mr. Zhao if it’s okay," Xu Mumu said with a smile. Though fish in the river weren’t forbidden from being caught, it was still meat, and getting involved with these things could be tricky.
Of course, Du Yu and Zhao Qing knew each other as Xu Mumu’s good friends, with her tutoring Du Yu weekly, and him attempting to find time to play with her on weekends.
Once home, Xu Mumu directly gave the youngsters a break, saying a word to Madam Chen before heading to the river with the kids in tow.
"Brother, teach me to catch fish too," Xu Minglei said, holding a bamboo basket, eagerly approaching his brother.
"I’ve taught you so many times and you still can’t learn, so foolish. I don’t want to teach you anymore; you guys should just play on the side." Xu Minghui said, looking at his mischievous younger brother with disdain. Despite being a troublemaker, he just couldn’t learn to catch fish, having only caught a crab once before.
"I’ll definitely learn this time," Xu Minglei said, a bit anxious.
"Minghui, if Minglei can’t learn, teach me. I’m sure I can learn it quickly," Tiedan chimed in.
"Go, go away. You all just play on the side." Xu Minghui promptly sent the two troublemakers away. What was there to learn with such deep water? These little guys were too small, and who knows what could happen.
"Sis, watch them, and you and Jiaojiao stay on the bank." Xu Minghui instructed as they reached the riverside, having vivid memories of his sister’s fall and not allowing Xu Mumu to enter the water again.
"Got it, brother," Xu Mumu said with a smile, holding a pointed stick she had specially asked Xu Hai to whittle for her.
