70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 67: Uncle Liu
"Just had a meal, don’t feel like having snacks, you guys share." Xu Mumu said with a smile.
After resting at home for a while, Xu Mumu took a few kids and walked towards the locust tree at the village entrance.
"These siblings, always following behind Mumu." Sun Huiping watched her two kids follow Xu Mumu and was at a loss for words. Letting her kids follow Xu Mumu might be a good thing, the changes in them recently have been quite significant.
"Isn’t it just fine? They’ve done their tasks at home, and they can learn more with Mumu. Look at our Jiaojiao, she’s changed a lot, not like she was before." Xu Po said calmly. His niece is in high school after all, learning more with Xu Mumu can make things easier for her in school.
"That’s true. By the way, honey, once the brigade’s land is all dug up, I plan to visit my parents’ home." Sun Huiping decided not to worry about it anymore, like Xu Po said, they aren’t very educated, having their kids learn more from Xu Mumu is a good thing.
"How about I accompany you when you go?" Xu Po suggested. There are quite a few people in the brigade, finishing the digging of the paddy fields would only take at most ten days.
"No need, I’ll just go see them myself." Sun Huiping shook her head. Her parents’ place is a mess, better not let Xu Po see those troubling affairs.
Her parents treated her nicely, but her younger brother was a bit unreliable, and her sister-in-law was even more immature. Recently, she heard that her sister-in-law coaxed their parents into selling most of the grain at home to fund her brother’s factory job entry fee.
Sun Huiping was exasperated. Her parents spoiled her brother with no limits, and with more than half a year left for the next ration share, and having sold off most of the grain already, how could they be so crazy? How would they make it through the latter half of the year?
Sun Huiping also mentioned these issues to Xu Po. If her parents truly couldn’t get through the situation, their family would need to provide some support.
But when it came to her brother and sister-in-law, Sun Huiping was at a loss.
Xu Mumu and the kids arrived under the locust tree, where a few village elders were sitting in the sun, weaving baskets with strips of bamboo.
"Sir Xu, Sir Zhao, Uncle Liu." Xu Mumu courteously greeted the elders, who were of higher seniority in the village.
Sir Xu was the elder brother of Xu Mumu’s grandfather, Sir Zhao was Zhao Qing’s grandfather, and Uncle Liu was a retired veteran from the village, with a leg that had become lame, although no one dared to question his status in the village.
"What brings Mumu to play around here?" Sir Xu greeted Xu Mumu with a kind smile. Their family only had one child per generation, but Old Xu’s family had several children per household. Sir Xu was quite envious and treated his grand-nieces and nephews kindly.
"Today my friends are coming to our village to play, so we’re waiting for them here." Xu Mumu didn’t hide anything.
"Uncle Liu, last time you were telling us a story that you didn’t finish, could you continue it?" Xu Minglei eagerly approached Uncle Liu, his chubby face full of admiration.
"Who said I didn’t finish? I completed it by the next day. It was you who didn’t come back." Uncle Liu spoke robustly, despite his age, he was in good health.
"Tiedan and I didn’t hear it, could you tell us again, Uncle Liu? I haven’t eaten my peach crisp; you can have it." Xu Minglei offered, reluctantly taking the peach crisp out of his bag.
"Then I’ll take it." Uncle Liu took the peach crisp without a hint of politeness.
"Go ahead." Xu Minglei reluctantly consented, even as his eyes fixed on the peach crisp.
"Tsk tsk, it’s just a peach crisp. I’ve eaten all kinds of things before, here, I’ll tell the story this time; if you don’t remember it, it’s on you." Uncle Liu’s eyes twinkled with humor, masking a look of disdain, as he slyly stuffed the peach crisp into Xu Minglei’s mouth when he wasn’t looking.
"I knew you were the best, Uncle Liu. Other than my sister, I like you the best." Xu Minglei’s eyes sparkled, the peach crisp was crunchy and sweet, tasting wonderful. Uncle Liu hadn’t eaten his treat, making the little boy happy to flatter him.
Uncle Liu never married after retiring. He did like kids, often carrying some candy in his pocket to amuse them.
Although Uncle Liu had a mischievous streak, the village children liked him and the stories he told.
Xu Mumu also sat nearby, listening as Uncle Liu spoke of his challenging past and experiences. His humorous and engaging storytelling easily drew in his audience; even Xu Mumu was entertained.
By the time Du Yu and the others arrived, the story was nearly finished. The kids were still wanting more.
"Uncle Liu, when will you tell another story? We’ll be the first to hear it." Xu Minglei eagerly asked Uncle Liu.
"There’re not that many stories to tell. I’ll see when I’m in a good mood." Uncle Liu cast a casual glance at Xu Minglei. This kid used to be quite a handful, but lately, even Tiedan had become more mature.
Uncle Liu’s gaze fixed on Xu Mumu. Her tutoring of the younger kids had already spread throughout the village, thanks to Li Caixia’s big mouth. Everyone knew how sensible Xu Mumu was.
"Uncle Liu, Sir Xu, Sir Zhao, we’re going to head off now." Xu Mumu said with a smile, noticing Uncle Liu observing her with an appraising look. Mumu didn’t mind, she was perfectly fine with letting him look.
"Mumu, how long have you been here?" Du Yu asked a bit bashfully; it was already close to two o’clock.
"Not too long." Xu Mumu replied with a light smile. Looking at the group with Du Yu were three other boys; they all seemed decent, from reasonably well-off families.
"Tsk tsk, cousin, aren’t you going to introduce us?" Qin Hao asked with a grin, his gaze sweeping over Xu Mumu’s face. She really was quite pretty, no wonder his cousin frequently mentioned her, even his aunt spoke highly of her.
"Oh right, I almost forgot, this is my cousin Qin Hao, and these are his friends, this is Li Jieming, and this is Lin Chao." Du Yu said, scratching his head in embarrassment as he introduced them to Xu Mumu.
