Chapter 74: Yin Yang’s Purpose

"Why is Yin Zhiqing out wandering alone?" Xu Mumu curiously looked at Yin Yang. Yin Yang’s face was really good-looking, no wonder it attracted the attention of so many women.

"I’m not that close with them, so I can only come out by myself." Yin Yang made a helpless expression.

"Really? I thought Yin Zhiqing was quite popular." Xu Mumu was noncommittal. Yin Yang’s reputation in the village was pretty good.

"Mr. Xu is mistaken, they’re just ordinary friends." Yin Yang smiled.

"You have so many friends." Xu Mumu’s mouth twitched.

"Not too many, are we considered friends?" Yin Yang looked at the petite girl walking beside him, with a gentle smile in his eyes, unlike the fake smile he showed others.

"I guess so." Xu Mumu hesitated for a moment but then nodded. She didn’t have many friends, just Xue Yan, Du Yu, and Zhao Qing. As for others, she wasn’t that familiar with them, but she was relatively familiar with Yin Yang.

"Why do you want to be friends with my sister?" Xu Minglei looked warily at the young man in front of him, feeling that this Yin Zhiqing had some bad intentions.

"Your sister is so impressive. I want to be friends with her and get along. Isn’t that normal?" Yin Yang said with a smile.

"My sister is indeed impressive, didn’t expect you to have an eye for that." Xu Minglei said proudly.

Yin Yang’s mouth twitched, this boy was completely obsessed with his sister.

Xu Mumu smiled, not saying much more, and continued walking forward. She wanted to see what Yin Yang had to say.

"Mr. Xu, I heard you’re looking for high school study materials. I have some friends in the Imperial City, and I can get them to send you some, including exam papers from those schools there." Yin Yang’s clear voice sounded in her ear.

"Oh? And then?" Xu Mumu slightly raised an eyebrow, how did this boy know?

"I’m running low on grain, and I want to buy some from your family, paying the market price for both money and coupons. How about it?" Yin Yang curled his lips, not believing Xu Mumu would resist the temptation.

"My family can’t even feed ourselves, we won’t sell to you." Xu Minglei, the little guy, started lamenting pitifully. Outside, the little guy would never say how well they ate, always describing their days as miserable, all taught by Li Caixia.

"I can’t make this decision, I need to ask my grandparents at home." Xu Mumu pulled Xu Minglei, who was still trying to lament further, aside. To be honest, the conditions Yin Yang offered were tempting.

"Go ahead and ask, I’m waiting for your good news." The smile on Yin Yang’s face deepened.

They didn’t talk about it anymore, both tacitly shifted the topic.

After returning home, Xu Mumu told the matter to Old Xu.

"Mumu, what do you think? We aren’t short on food at the moment." Old Xu puffed on a tobacco leaf cigarette.

"Grandpa, I want those study materials. If our family runs out of food, I can go up the mountain a few more times and definitely catch something good." Xu Mumu said seriously. The Imperial City is the capital, and the education level there is surely much better than in our county.

"Just sell a little then, tell Yin Zhiqing we have to keep enough for ourselves, so we can’t sell him much." Old Xu took a puff and said. His impression of Yin Yang wasn’t bad. Yin Yang came to the village two years ago and was hardworking, unlike the other young educated people, who were all too delicate.

"Don’t worry, Grandpa, I understand." Xu Mumu smiled happily. She knew Grandpa was thinking of her. If they saved the grain for themselves, the family would surely store enough to not go hungry in the future. Having enough food put away ensured peace of mind, as the days of hunger scared everyone.

"Mumu has grown up." Old Xu sighed. He was glad his granddaughter wanted to study more.

Xu Mumu’s face turned slightly red, she was doing this for herself too.

When she went to class the next day, Xu Mumu noticed Xiao Mengqin sitting at the very back of the classroom. Xu Mumu raised an eyebrow; this girl wasn’t one to easily admit defeat.

"Mumu, Xiao Mengqin really went to sit at the back." Xue Yan said excitedly.

"I saw it, okay, let’s start the morning reading and study." Xu Mumu said lightly.

"I don’t want to study, I don’t understand anything. This is a new storybook my cousin sent me." Xue Yan waved the storybook in her hand. Seeing that Xu Mumu didn’t want to talk much about Xiao Mengqin, Xue Yan had to change the subject.

"Yanyan, don’t read novels now, learn a bit more, or you’ll regret it later." Xu Mumu seriously said to Xue Yan.

"Regret what, I might be going to work by the second half of the year." Xue Yan said indifferently. Once her uncle found her a job, she’d start working. Studying seemed pointless to her.

Xu Mumu pressed her lips together. It wasn’t the first time she’d reminded Xue Yan, but she gave up. It was useless; Xue Yan wasn’t interested in academics. Even with the college entrance exams, she probably wouldn’t want to take part.

Xu Mumu decided not to talk about studying in front of Xue Yan anymore. She’d reminded her twice; there was no point in saying it again.

Even Du Yu knew to be motivated. Recently, Du Yu studied quite diligently, and his midterm exam results improved significantly. Although her notes played a significant role, it was mainly because Du Yu was hardworking.

"Mumu, there’s some news. My dad asked me to pass it to you." During break, Du Yu called Xu Mumu outside.

"What news?" Xu Mumu asked curiously.

"It’s about your third uncle’s family. Your third aunt’s temporary worker position was sold, and a new person replaced her." Du Yu looked at Xu Mumu with some hesitation. After all, it was about Xu Mumu’s third uncle’s family.

"Just that? The position was theirs; if they want to sell it, let them." Xu Mumu said calmly. Her third uncle’s family was already burdened with debt. Selling the position wasn’t surprising.

"They only sold my third aunt’s position?" Xu Mumu asked.

"And your third aunt’s mother’s position. Her job was quite relaxed, but she was also a formal worker. My dad specifically asked and found out that was sold too." Du Yu said.

"Oh, well, they still have two jobs, they won’t starve. No need to worry. Our family is already separated; my third uncle is now an in-law of the Old Lin Family. Tell your father that as long as they don’t cause trouble, there’s no need to manage them. But if they do cause trouble, kicking them out of our family wouldn’t be an issue." Xu Mumu said coldly.

Her third uncle’s family refused to heed advice and was deceived. Even if they starved on the streets, Xu Mumu felt she wouldn’t be too bothered by it.
