Chapter 97: Bruised

When Xu Hai and Xu Po, the brothers, arrived and saw the large snake, they gasped in shock, covered in cold sweat from fear.

Although they didn’t know how the snake was killed, if they had encountered such a large snake, they certainly wouldn’t have survived. This serpent was so big, clearly an adult, and could easily swallow one or two people whole.

"Oh my goodness, my daughters, are you all alright?" Xu Hai looked worriedly at Xu Mumu and her siblings, carefully checking the two mischievous boys. Xu Minghui had several surface injuries, and since his daughter was a grown woman, he didn’t check her.

"Dad, don’t worry. I just got hit a little. Once we get home, I’ll have Mom apply some safflower oil." Xu Mumu said with a smile. The feeling of surviving a disaster was something she hadn’t experienced in a long time.

"Minghui, carry your sister. She’s injured, and I’ll help with the snake along with the fourth brother." Xu Hai was distressed; a boy’s skin is rough and thick, so surface wounds aren’t a big deal, but their daughter, whom they had raised with care, was injured, and it pained him terribly.

"Dad, I’m fine, I can walk." Xu Mumu said helplessly, finding it exaggerated how her father acted as if she was severely injured. Once they get back, having her little brother help support her would be enough. She estimated there was some bruising on her back.

"No, you’re injured, and the mountain paths are treacherous. What if you fall? Scars aren’t pretty on a girl." Xu Hai added one last thing. He knew his daughter cared about her appearance.

"Minglei can help me. Brother is also injured." Xu Mumu shook her head, as Xu Minghui had a long cut on his leg. Although it wasn’t deep, he had already applied some crushed mugwort to it, and the bleeding had stopped by now.

"Alright then, Jiaojiao, Little Tao, keep an eye on your sister. If Mumu falls, see how I deal with you." Xu Hai said, not forgetting to threaten the two young ones.

"Uncle, we will definitely look after big sister." Xu Jiaojiao said earnestly.

"I will too." Xu Tao’s voice was low. He was still shaken from fear, knowing if his big sister hadn’t saved him, he would have been swallowed by the snake.

Xu Po was also very grateful to Xu Mumu. On the way there, Xu Jiaojiao had already recounted what happened. Without Xu Mumu’s intervention, he wouldn’t know where to cry over the loss of his son.

On the way back, Xu Hai and Xu Po were discussing the plans to sell the snake.

"Dad, selling the snake means selling just the venom sac and gallbladder. Let’s keep the meat and eat it gradually." The snake was more than five meters long and quite thick, probably weighing over a hundred pounds. Xu Hai and his companions found it quite heavy to carry.

"We can’t consume that much. The weather’s hot, and it’ll spoil. Better to sell it. If Mumu wants meat, I’ll buy you pork once we sell the snake." Xu Hai said while carrying the snake.

"Where are you planning to sell it?" Xu Mumu asked, interested in going along, though her back hurt badly. She estimated there was bruising which needed to be treated with safflower oil by her mom.

"The pharmacy is buying, and it’s expensive, you know. You’re really capable, daughter." Xu Hai said excitedly, knowing the snake was valuable.

"Can the snake meat be processed at a national restaurant?" Xu Mumu asked curiously.

"You want to sell it separately?" Xu Hai asked.

"Dad, the venom fangs, venom sac, and gallbladder are the valuable parts. Those buying snakes generally only want these. As for the meat, instead of eating it, why not sell it to the national restaurant? I remember Uncle works at a national restaurant. When you go to the county, quietly ask him about it." Xu Mumu said with a mischievous grin.

For the first time, she felt her aunt married well. Although Uncle was just an ordinary worker at the national restaurant, having someone there made things easier.

"Alright." Xu Hai nodded in agreement, believing his daughter’s assessment that it’s valuable to ensure it’s not undersold.

At the mountain’s base, Xu Hai and Xu Po, along with Xu Minghui, took a shortcut to the county. Xu Minghui strongly insisted on going, claiming he knew people and worried his father might get cheated.

Knowing her brother was clever, Xu Mumu agreed. She understood her brother was the type who could talk with anyone and wouldn’t easily suffer a loss.

Upon reaching home, Xu Xue and her sister were busy in the kitchen. Seeing Xu Mumu return, seemingly injured and looking disheveled, they noticed something was amiss.

Xu Xue’s eyes flickered with an understanding. Everything except the eldest branch’s situation was unchanged in this life. This made her pay more attention to Xu Mumu, as the eldest branch’s transformations were entirely because of her, though the rest of the family remained as annoying as before.

Noticing Xu Xue’s scrutiny, Xu Mumu didn’t mind. If she wanted to observe, let her; there wouldn’t be much to discover.

"Big sister, does your back hurt?" Xu Jiaojiao helped Xu Mumu to the bed, not daring to have her lie down, but rather having her lie on her stomach.

"Of course it hurts. Jiaojiao, help me call Mom back. I can’t find where she placed the safflower oil." Xu Mumu sighed. The pain was real, quite unlike her past life when she had thicker skin and a tough constitution. In this household, she was a delicate girl.

"Got it, big sister." The young girl quickly ran out.

Probably her own mother was like a mouse, hiding things so well. Although her parents’ room was small, it was packed with little treasures.

Upon hearing her daughter was injured, Li Caixia immediately put down her work, not caring about earning work points. Madam Chen was worried too, but not as impulsively as Li Caixia. She called Xu Jiaojiao over to inquire further, feeling a bit more relieved to know there was no severe issue.

Even so, thoughts of her granddaughter preoccupied her work. After Li Caixia and the others left, any motivation to work seemed to dissipate.

As soon as Li Caixia got home, she hurried to Xu Mumu’s room. Upon discovering the injury was on her daughter’s back, she shooed the boys out.

"Oh dear, daughter, what on earth happened? How did you get hurt so badly with bruising beneath the skin?" Li Caixia was extremely worried. Seeing her daughter’s severe injury changed her complexion, "No, we must go to the clinic now to get some medicine."
