A Former Police Officer Who Died And Get A Second Life!-Chapter 38: The Silver Haired Beginner
A voice slipped out of him without thinking.
"Huh? Um, I’d like to register as an adventurer."
As the child looked at him as if asking why, he instead found himself wondering why not.
"Are you really sure about this?"
Without meaning to, he asked again, adding that if the child wanted to reconsider, now would be the time.
He didn’t know what circumstances had led the child to want to become an adventurer, but with that appearance, there were surely other jobs available.
However, his concern was in vain.
The child insisted that he wanted to become an adventurer and so the procedures began.
He handed over the required documents, along with the guild card, and the child looked slightly puzzled.
He wondered if the child was hesitant about drawing blood, but without much delay, the child pricked his finger with the needle that had been handed to him.
The flowing blood touched the card and a name surfaced.
It wasn’t anything unusual to him, but the child looked at it with clear fascination.
Eh, sixteen years old?!
So he was already an adult?
He had assumed the child was much younger, but apparently, he was legally an adult.
Still surprised, he went through the guild’s explanation and then his eyes turned toward the beastmen who appeared to be slaves accompanying the child.
"Um, is there any problem with having them help me?"
He had assumed the boy was the son of a wealthy household and bringing the slaves along just as part of some kind of pastime.
There were people like that from time to time.
They would register half-heartedly, leave the fighting to others, swoop in only for the best parts, and if things became dangerous, they would use their slaves as shields and run away themselves.
If they failed, they would lash out at those slaves around them and make unreasonable complaints, blaming the guild.
It’s troublesome people.
He wondered if this boy was the same, but judging from what he could see, the reactions were different.
The collars made it obvious that they were slaves, yet there was clear trust between them.
None of them showed a trace of displeasure; rather, they looked as if they were genuinely happy to be of help.
When he told them there was no problem, he was thanked.
Was that really something to be so happy about?
"...No. Please take care."
After returning only those words, the child headed straight toward the request board with a cheerful air.
His profile still retained a hint of childishness, yet when spoken to, he was composed, and even toward a guild employee like himself, he was very polite.
There was none of the condescending attitude toward others that nobles often had.
Not only did he speak cheerfully with his slaves, but he was also holding a very young slave in his arms. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Looking at that beautiful scene, he found himself wondering if he was the strange one for having looked down on beastmen simply because they were slaves.
Up until now, beastmen had never actually done anything to him.
He had only been taught that they were detestable beings.
But then, why did the child look so happy?
They looked almost like a family, and at that sight, he couldn’t help but feel envious.
If even slaves could have something like that, then maybe someone like him, a mere commoner, could too...
"...What a luck."
He was jealous.
Jealous of the beastmen who were being smiled at like that.
Jealous of the slave child being held in those arms.
Unaware that so many eyes were drawn to that scene, the people themselves simply accepted a request and headed off to gather medicinal herbs.
...
That day as well, he woke up in the morning, had breakfast, and headed toward the guild.
"Um, excuse me, but could you tell me if there’s anything a beginner adventurer should have?"
"......."
As usual, while accepting a medicinal herb gathering request, he asked the receptionist about what items were necessary.
He felt like he was being looked at with a somewhat pitying expression, but surprisingly, the receptionist answered quite readily.
He was glad it was a kind receptionist.
He had thought he might be told, Look it up yourself! but instead, the receptionist even carefully wrote everything down in a memo for him.
Feeling relieved, Qiong Xing left with a smile, but he did not realize that this response was special treatment meant only for him.
With his good looks and the way he treated everyone politely, Qiong Xing was cherished at the guild and becoming something of a soothing presence to everyone there.
"After gathering medicinal herbs today, let’s do a bit of shopping in town."
Unaware that he had become something like everyone’s idol, Qiong Xing headed out as usual to gather medicinal herbs together with the others.
"By the way, how are these medicinal herbs actually used?"
The question suddenly came to him, so he asked Elias, but it seemed that even Elias didn’t know the details.
Since they were called medicinal herbs, Qiong Xing had imagined something like aloe or mugwort, but apparently that wasn’t the case, they were used to make healing potions.
Then what exactly were those potions?
When he asked, he was told that drinking one would heal injuries, which sounded extremely suspicious.
Injuries healed just by drinking something?
And the higher-ranked ones could even reattach severed limbs?
No, no, no—what kind of fairy tale was that!?
If something like that existed, doctors wouldn’t be needed anymore, he said, only to be told that you couldn’t exactly bring doctors along on adventures.
I see. That made sense.
Being able to treat injuries on the spot was indeed a tremendous advantage.
On top of that, potions were apparently very expensive to begin with and beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Even rookie adventurers rarely owned any.
It seemed that they took on low-rank requests to earn money and raise their rank, and once they reached higher ranks, they would prepare the necessary weapons, armor, and healing potions.
