Chapter 118: Questioning

"Wait! Wait! Wait!" Serena exclaimed the moment Liz went silent. "You’re telling me that someone’s being sent here?! Do they even have a say in all this?!"

Her mind was barely able to process that this whole thing had become a mission, let alone one that had someone picked out for her to help... She didn’t even want to think about the reward.

It was too tempting. Which was the point honestly.

"The priest does have a say in this and he agreed to it." Liz answered. "Quite happily too I must add."

Serena cringed at those words. "Really...?"

"I mean he did grow up training to be a priest of the Beast God and has now been given the divine duty of siring and raising the Beast God’s righthand men, so it’s not that strange." Liz mused. "Are you worried about his looks or something? You could choose another priest if you really want to... The Beast God just thought he was doing you the favor since you seem against the idea of having mates and cubs."

Serena was about to sarcastically ask what gave it away when she recalled that mission for the pregnancy pill. That sly god... No wonder he chose to find her a partner.

And while she had to admit it did make things easier, she still had her doubts about the whole arrangement. In fact, she’d rather just not do it all together.

However, that wasn’t going to work. As much as Serena hated it.

If she rejected this mission, it was all over. The Beast God would deem her useless and find someone else more willing to complete his missions. And she’d lose out on her only chance to get back at Mark.

"It’s not about looks or anything like that..." Serena finally sighed. "I’m just not sure if I can do this. That priest and I will be bound together as mates in the process... What if he changes his mind or something? Realizes he isn’t attracted to me."

Because once they were mated, that priest could never leave her. She could cut the bond between them, but that would only make him a rootless beastman if the severing of their bond didn’t kill him first.

Honestly, he was getting the short end of the stick in this whole situation. What would he even gain from this except the Beast God’s recognition? Was it even worth it?

"I don’t think you have to worry about that." Liz stated. "The priest knew what was at stake when he was offered this mission. He understood the risks and still made the choice to go through with it. You don’t have to worry about him."

Serena sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Can I put this decision on hold for now."

She knew she was probably going to land up agreeing to it, but her mind needed time to digest this all. Really think over if this was something she could go through with.

Or was it perhaps time to face the music and realize she had to give it all up.

"You have three days to accept or decline this mission." Liz replied. "But know this. If you refuse this mission, your soul will be removed from this world and another will take your place... And that’ll spell death for you."

"Got it." Serena nodded her head, already understanding what was at stake here. "I just need some time to really think this over."

"Understood." Liz murmured. "Let me know if you have any questions about the mission."

"I will..." Serena sighed. "Anyway... I have some other things that I want to go over with you."

"What are they?" Liz tilted its head.

"Your deal with the Beast God... What was it?" Serena asked.

She knew she was going on a tangent here, but she wanted to put everything together. She had the Beast God’s motives, but she still couldn’t understand Liz’s. Well, she had an inkling...

But it was better if she asked Liz directly.

"Oh..." Liz blinked twice, taking in her words before it said, "The moment when I died, I was filled with regret for leaving Kiro behind with no one to watch over him... And with Sarah’s bullying, I feared he wouldn’t last long in this world.

"The Beast God must’ve noticed my regrets as I was passing through his realm of death because he called upon my soul and offered a deal. He could use my physical body as an anchor and keep my soul. In exchange, he’ll make sure that my brother was taken care of and lived a good life."

Serena pursed her lips at this. "But why make the deal at all? Couldn’t the Beast God just use your dead body since your soul had passed on."

"Funny thing about that is I hadn’t completely passed on and the Beast God needed a body in a state of limbo? to place a new soul into it. A fully dead one would have you being a zombie... and that wasn’t really allowed." Liz explained. "Of course, to place a new soul into a body, you need the original soul’s consent. I don’t understand all of it, but according to the Beast God, divine law dictates he gets consent because of free will or something like that."

"Then how would that soul transfer pill work?" Serena suddenly asked.

She hadn’t thought about it before, but what if there were limits to it. The system did say she could get sent back to her home world, but now she was beginning to question it.

"It depends on where you’re going, but the Beast God would likely make a deal similar to me." Liz mused. "And if it’s getting sent back to your own body, the Beast God will probably just implant all these memories into your mind before you died since reviving your dead body will cause trouble for your creator god."

"Hold up... There’s a god in my world?! And how would reviving me cause more trouble?" Serena questioned. "Wasn’t taking my soul already enough? What’s returning it going to cause?"

Liz sighed. "All universes have a creator god that builds it into existence. Sometimes they create multiple gods like your world and this one. Though your creator god kind of just sleeps a lot, so let’s everyone do what they want. Doesn’t really seem to like interfering in mortal affairs."

Serena wasn’t sure how to feel about the fact that gods existed in her world. It seemed almost impossible, but considering she’d just met a god earlier today, impossibles were beginning to become possible.

"The Beast God had to make a deal with them to get your soul. Not sure what that was, but it has put the Beast God into a mini slumber to recover his power, so it must’ve been something big." Liz mused. "That being said, reviving your dead body isn’t a simple matter. You’re playing with Fate and that always gets messy."

"But going back in time and implanting memories isn’t?" Serena muttered dryly.

"Yeah. Since time isn’t linear for gods. That’s how they see the future and all that." Liz stated.

"Wait..." Serena frowned. "If the Beast God can see into the future, then how was he unable to stop all this from happening in the first place?"

"Remember that free will thing? It affects what the gods can see and even if they do see something bad, they can’t directly interfere." Liz answered. "Plus the future can go millions of different ways since choices of everything dictate what happens. The only constants are weather and seasons. Everything else can change in a second, so even for gods, it’s tiring to track."

So at the end of the day, everything was left up to her. The Beast God couldn’t interfere with the affairs of the beast world directly so would use pawns to do his dirty work basically.

Deals were made to get mortals to do things, bypassing that divine free will law. Which explained why most of her missions didn’t have a horrible condition for her rejecting them.

Because there were several ways to go about fulfilling that first mission - rapidly developing the beast world - so she could pick and choose as she wanted for the most part. However, the same couldn’t be said about the second mission hence the death threat basically.

"Alright I got it..." Serena finally said, her mind whirling with all this information.

She probably missed a few things, but at this point Serena was too tired to ask about anything else. Her mind was crammed full with so much that she hadn’t processed everything.

She needed some time to think over everything. Accept all these new truths about this world and hers. But at least now she knew the system’s true motives and what exactly she needed to do to get back home.

The question now was was she willing to do what it took to complete it or not.
