A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 138: A Proper Chat (2)
"Show me what?" Theo asked, finally finding his voice.
He was still in shock, unable to believe what was happening. But he also couldn’t deny that he was just having a strange dream. The pain in his arm told him this was all real.
Lix shifted into a kitten and said, "As you can see I’m no ordinary animal, but rather one sent by the Beast God. I’ve been sent here to give Serena missions."
As the system spoke, it kept shifting into different animals before going back to its snake form once more. Silence filled the air as Liz finished speaking, only the crackling and popping of the fire making any sound.
There was more to explain, but Serena wanted to give Theo a moment to process this all. Because it was a lot to process.
Finally Theo sighed, "Alright so let’s go with this whole Beast God messenger thing... Why Serena? Don’t get me wrong or anything, but wouldn’t a priest be a better fit for this. I mean they spend their whole lives dedicated to the Beast God... Surely one of them would’ve done what you needed."
"Nope they’re all useless." Liz said. "Well, except for that one... But the rest don’t have what the Beast God requires."
"And that would be...?" Theo asked.
"Knowledge." Serena sighed, shifting Liz onto one hand before retrieving one of her leather-bound books. She then held it out. "I have knowledge which is not from this world."
She was still on the edge about revealing that she was a soul from another universe, so was compromising this way. If Theo could handle this... Then perhaps one day she’d tell him about her past life.
Theo took the book from her hand, opening it to see the writing. He couldn’t read, that was something only priests and high ranking beastmen had the privilege of, but he could tell the writing style was different from what he had seen before.
"W-where..." Theo started, not even sure what to ask.
Where had she gotten this? What was that language? How did she know how to read? Was it because of that weird shapeshifting animal? Liz was it? The questions just kept piling up by the second.
"It’s called a book and contains ancient knowledge written in a language called English." Serena explained, taking the book back from Theo. "I learnt how to read and write by accident."
It was vague, but everything she had said was the truth. Most of the book’s knowledge was considered ancient knowledge by her world’s standards. There was very little that was modern.
Additionally, her learning to read and write was a bit of a fluke really. Of course, if Theo questioned her more, then she would have to explain more about her past life.
And she wasn’t sure if she was ready for that just yet. She wanted to take this all slowly. One major truth at a time.
"I have several more of these hidden away thanks to a power that the Beast God gave me." Serena stated, sending the book back to her subspace. "One of my missions is to spread all this knowledge across the world and improve the lives of beastmen."
Theo could barely focus on her words, shocked by her ability to make things appear and disappear. However, they did make everything suddenly click into place.
"The safety gear and running around to do strange things..." Theo muttered under his breath. "They were all for these missions of yours... But didn’t you say you couldn’t tell me about that."
It made sense that way, but he still couldn’t understand why a priest couldn’t do this. That was literally their reason for existing. Why make a beastwoman do such difficult tasks?
Had the Beast God gone crazy?
"That’s on me." Liz lied. "But I lifted the ban because it was messing with the Beast God’s plans. Things will be easier if you know the truth. However, you can’t go blabbing this all to others. Otherwise, the Beast God will strike you with lightning."
"Liz..." Serena called out, despite knowing that the system was covering for her. "I don’t think Theo will tell anyone."
"Yeah... And even if I did, who would believe me?" Theo sighed. "I’d probably get labeled as crazy."
Serena stiffened at those words, her breath becoming shallow for a moment. Liz noticed her sudden shift and quickly added, "Fine. Now onto the priest stuff."
"I take it that is another mission." Theo mused.
"You’re right." Serena nodded her head, blinking back to reality. "Along with spreading this knowledge, I need to take a priest mate to create children."
"WHAT?!" Theo cried out in shock.
"Keep it down!" Serena hissed, glancing at the hut. "Kiro’s busy sleeping. I don’t need him to wake up right now!"
"Right sorry..." Theo muttered, running a hand through his hair. "But what in the Beast God’s name, Serena?!"
"Why are you getting upset?" Serena retorted. "That’s the whole reason beastwomen have multiple mates. To have kids."
"That’s not my issue..." Theo murmured, face heating up. "I mean why a priest? Couldn’t... you know... have completed this mission with me? Why bring some random beastman into this?"
"Well isn’t that cute..." Liz stated before Serena could make sense of Theo’s words. "But sadly that won’t work. The children will contain the souls of divine beings meant to serve the Beast God. Thus they cannot just be any ordinary beastman. They require divine power to be flowing through their veins.
"And as we both know, you need to be from a certain clan and receive at least two decades of special training before you can even hold divine power and become a priest. Serena doesn’t have the luxury of time to fulfill all this even if the Beast God blessed her with divine power, so it must come from the father instead."
"I see..." Theo murmured, pressing his lips together.
He wasn’t sure how to feel about this. He knew there was a logical reason for Serena needing to be with a priest, but he also couldn’t help but feel jealous about it.
"Yeah so as you can see my hand was forced with this one." Serena sighed. "I’m not exactly keen on the whole priest mate thing, but I can’t reject the Beast God. Otherwise, I die."
"You what...?" Theo paled at her words.
There was no way she had just said that last part. He had to have misheard what she said.
"It’s a do or die type of mission." Serena stated. "That’s why I’m going along with it. However, if you feel you don’t want to get involved with me anymore, then that’s fine. We can end things on a good-"
"I don’t want to end things." Theo interrupted. "But I think I need time to process this all..."
Despite acting like he was pretty calm, for most of this conversation anyway, Theo was actually freaking out inside. And he was just barely keeping it together.
He still had so many questions, but he didn’t know where to start. Not to mention he feared voicing some of those questions. Because he was scared that he wouldn’t want to hear the answer.
"That’s fair enough..." Serena stated. "This is a lot to take in all at once. Take your time going through everything and let me know if you have any more questions... Um... Liz won’t be around though. This is kind of a one time thing."
They had to get permission from the Beast God and he barely agreed to it. Mostly because it was a headache for the Beast God to reverse the invisibility thing he had on Liz.
"That’s fine." Theo said.
He went quiet, wondering if he should ask Serena. Their relationship had definitely changed with this new factor and it made him wonder if he could change the fake into real.
But he quickly chickened out of it. Now wasn’t the time to be thinking about those kinds of things. Serena had dropped a bomb shell on him and he needed some time to properly think through things.
"Alright then... My time is up." Liz declared suddenly. "I’m going to go."
Theo numbly nodded his head, a little distracted by his own thoughts. Liz soon disappeared from Theo’s sight and wrapped itself around Serena’s upper arm.
It then murmured, "Are you that dense or acting that way purposely?"
Serena knew what the system was talking about, but didn’t answer. She had noticed the shift in Theo and his words from earlier had confirmed her suspicions. However, she felt she was ready to deal with them.
She wanted to be ignorant about it all.
But that wasn’t fair to Theo. She had to make it clear to him that even if she took the priest as a mate, things between them wouldn’t change. They couldn’t change.
Sighing, Serena ran a hand through her hair and murmured, "Theo, I know you need some time to process everything, but I need to make something clear. I don’t plan on making you my real mate."
