A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 150: A Walk Through The Forest
The two walked silently through the forest, Serena occasionally stopping to harvest different vegetables and herbs. As she harvested them, Serena would hand the plant over to Theo to put in her basket which he was carrying.
However, the tiger beastman would always stiff the plant beforehand, taking note of what it looked and smelt like. Especially the herbs. That way he could easily harvest any he came across while out hunting.
They would sometimes pass by rabbit beastmen out foraging by Serena purposely went deeper into the forest than normal, using this chance to work on that exploration mission of hers.
However, Theo soon noticed that they were heading quite deep into the forest and remarked, "Is this how far you normally go?"
"Not usually..." Seerena answered honestly, handing him the herb she just harvested before straightening up. "But I thought I’d take the chance today since you’re around. After all, you can easily handle any problems we might face."
Theo pursed his lips at that, the back of his neck going a little red. He had to admit that he was flattered by her words, glad she trusted him enough to protect her from danger.
But another part of him was a little upset about Serena purposely putting herself in possible danger because she knew he would protect her. It just didn’t sit well with him.
"Something wrong?" Serena asked, gazing at his frozen form.
Theo shook his head and sighed, "Not really... I just think that you shouldn’t put yourself in danger. Anything could go wrong."
"I suppose that’s true." Serena mused. "But I’m not completely useless."
As she spoke, she retrieved her bone knife from her subspace, showing it to Theo. The tiger beastman gazed at it, blinking a couple of times as he processed what just happened.
He still had a hard time fully understanding this whole thing with the Beast God. Not that Serena didn’t explain herself, she answered his questions when he asked, but it was still something that he needed to wrap his mind around.
Especially when Serena hid her ability so well he almost forgot about it. It was almost scary too.
"While that may be good for ambushes... A bone knife won’t do much harm against a monster or desperate rootless beastman." Theo said, eyeing the weapon in her hands. "Also it looks like it’s starting to wear out."
Serena examined the bone knife closely, noting the edge was beginning to get dull. It had been getting harder to use which was why she was only using it when she cooked, opting to use her claws when harvesting.
However, she hadn’t realized it had gotten this bad. And by the looks of it, she would probably need to get a new one soon or find a way to sharpen it.
"Looks like I’ll need to repair it or get a new one." Serena mused, glancing back up at Theo as she returned her knife to her subspace.
Theo watched the knife disappear and murmured, "I still can’t get used to that ability... What is it even?"
"Um... sort of a summoning ability and a storage one combined. I can summon anything I have in this storage space of mine." Serena answered, not sure how else to explain the ability to Theo.
It wasn’t like she could exactly take him inside the subspace to show it to him. Her subspace level was too low for that last she checked.
As expected Theo looked a little confused by her words. "A storage and summoning ability?"
"Like this." Serena sighed, picking up a leaf before sending it to her subspace. A moment later she retrieved it. "Think of it like a big invisible basket that holds my stuff until I need it."
"Oh..." Theo said. "I suppose that’s quite useful... Do you have anything else stored in this ’basket’?"
"Mostly just food because stuff doesn’t go bad in it. I also have some clothing for winter, a few items from my former tribe, tools from the Beast God." Serena answered, counting each item on her finger. "Oh and salt."
She retrieved one clay jar of salt, watching Theo’s jaw drop at the sight. She patted the jar and said, "I have two more of these... But that’s between the two of us."
"I don’t think anyone would believe me even if I told them." Theo muttered. "How in the world did you get so much salt? Not even the wealthiest beastmen in the city have that much at once. Maybe half that jar... And you have three..."
"It was a gift from the Beast God for completing a mission." Serena stated, sending the jar back. "I get different things for each mission."
"So what do you get for having cubs with the priest?" Theo suddenly asked.
Serena went still at the question. After a moment of silence, she answered softly, "I get one wish..."
Now it was Theo’s turn to go quiet. He wanted to ask what Serena wanted so badly that she’d do something for a wish granted by the Beast God. But that look in her eyes told him that he was venturing into dangerous territory.
Serena just started being honest about everything and he didn’t want her to close off again.
"I see..." Theo finally said. He then glanced up at the sky, noting it was getting late. "We should probably get a move on. We’ll need to head back to the village soon to prepare dinner."
Serena nodded her head in understanding, a little glad that he didn’t ask more about the wish. Because she wasn’t even sure where to begin explaining that one.
They went back to harvesting a few more herbs and vegetables before Theo handed Serena the almost full basket. She shouldered it while he shifted into his beast form, so they could get to the village quicker.
Serena got on his back and soon they were off. Once they were much closer and Theo could catch the scent of rabbit beastmen, Theo came to a stop. Serena got down and Theo shifted back into his human form taking the basket from Serena.
They then headed back to the village, walking side by side until their fingers were almost brushing against each other.
