A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 90: The Three Missions (1)
Before Serena could ask for more information about the three missions Liz had found for her, Kiro and Theo returned from the river. She quickly whispered to Liz that they would talk later before she turned her attention to them.
Theo had brought her a bucket of water to wash up because the sun was setting soon and by then the water would be icy cold. Serena was grateful for the water and quickly took a whore’s bath inside the hut while Theo took over cooking.
Once she had thrown out the dirty water, dinner was finished cooking. Theo served up food and they had dinner and enjoyed some leisure time after cleaning up.
"I think tomorrow I’ll go catch some wild birds." Theo mused aloud after Serena put Kiro to bed. "I saw some nests the other day, so there should be a few lingering around."
Serena took a seat next to him in front of the fire and nodded her head in understanding. Then a thought suddenly crossed her mind.
"Theo, do you mind if I come with you tomorrow?" Serena asked. "I’d like to see them in their natural habitat for myself. See what their nests look like and stuff."
That was a lie, but she couldn’t exactly tell Theo that she wanted to come along so she could try hunting one on the sly for her mission. After all, one wild bird was all that was left to get.
Theo furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "Why do you want to go? I could easily just bring you a nest to examine."
"But it’s not the same." Serena retorted. "Come on. We can even take Kiro with us. I bet he’s eager to go hunting again. I don’t mind watching him while you get the wild birds."
Theo didn’t seem convinced at her words, but he agreed to let her come anyway. By now, he was used to Serena getting herself involved in strange activities. What was a little bird catching in her books anyway?
She’d done weirder things before.
They chatted a bit more with Theo planning to go hunting in the afternoon to get more prey for the cold season while Serena would see if she could find any cotton plants. She’d take Kiro with her this time.
Mostly because she was feeling a little guilty about neglecting him so much at the village center while she went off to do other things. The cub was pretty understanding about her often leaving him alone, but Serena didn’t think it was a good idea to keep doing that.
She needed to give him more attention and perhaps use this time tomorrow to teach him more things. After all, there was no education system in this world.
Well, that wasn’t exactly true either.
The cities had some kind of education system. Specifically amongst the priests living there who went through special training and many learnt to read and write on stone.
Because part of their divine duty was keeping records for the future. Of course as it was meant to be divine, reading and writing were strictly only to be done by priests and city kings. Anyone else doing it wasn’t looked well upon.
Serena thought it was dumb, but she could see the logic in it. Information and knowledge was kept among a select few bloodlines allowing them to control a lot of things.
It was the same as healers hoarding their knowledge to themselves as well as with other valuable crafts. Everyone used their knowledge to help benefit their family lines only.
Rabbit Village was a rare case where beastmen were more willing to share knowledge between themselves. But that could also be seen as more of a community effort to keep their clan alive in this harsh world.
Serena doubted they’d be so open to sharing things with her if she wasn’t a part of this village and helping them out too. Then again they were genuinely nicer people compared to her who only looked at the benefits of things.
Still, perhaps she should get some education system in place. Not now, maybe once their city was more stable, but sharing knowledge amongst everyone would be for the better.
She understood the need to hoard it for power, however, it would slow down development in her eyes. Possible geniuses in different fields might never be discovered if there wasn’t some kind of spark that led them down that route.
Besides, they’d lead better lives with some basic knowledge and it would change how things were done in this world. She was already destroying the natural power hierarchy.
Might as well take every other system along with it. That’s what whoever created Liz wanted anyway. So, she might as well go big with it.
That being said, it would take a bit of time before she could get to that little side project, so for now she needed to teach Kiro herself. Give him the tools he needed to live life independently in the future.
Because she wasn’t going to be around forever. There were other things she needed to do.
Theo and Serena soon retired for the night and once Serena confirmed Theo was sleeping, she finally entered her subspace to find Liz lazing around there. The blue snake had gone to the subspace during dinner, getting bored with Serena.
It had quickly realized that Serena would just tune its chatter out and keep her attention focused on others. Which led to it sulking here. Serena only knew how to use it and had no intention of being friendly with it.
"Alright, we’re alone now." Serena murmured, taking a seat next to the snake. "You can tell me about these missions you found."
Liz let out a hiss before it muttered, "Your first mission will be to increase your exploration percentage on your world map to five percent. You’ll be rewarded 1000 coins and coordinates to a great discovery."
Serena frowned at the last part. Increasing her exploration percentage was fine, she was bound to do it anyway with all the traveling she was doing. The coins would definitely be a bonus.
However, she didn’t really like that other reward. It sounded more like extra work for her future self. Not to mention, Liz was purposely not being clear about the actual ’discovery’.
Was it really something great? Maybe for the world, but definitely not for her.
"Can you not tell me what this great discovery will be?" Serena asked the system.
Liz shook its head. "That information is currently unavailable. However, this discovery will help with your city planning in developing new things. That is all the information you can be provided with."
Serena pursed her lips. So, this wasn’t just some random mission like she thought. It was purposely targeted at her city project. Perhaps it was some kind of important raw material she needed.
It would explain why she needed coordinates. The discovery was likely a physical object. A stone quarry maybe? She’d only seen wood and clay around with large boulders mostly around the river.
She hadn’t really seen much stone around and considering how things were built here it wasn’t often used. Maybe just for some tools that the rabbit beastmen used. It was why she was looking into making bricks instead.
Transporting large quantities of stone around would not be a great option for them logistically and safety wise. Especially when the distance was unknown and they’d have to go looking for it first.
And stone wouldn’t be an easy thing to find in a heavily forested region. It was easier to find in more mountainous areas like the original owner’s former home.
Then it hit her. Metal.
She hadn’t thought of it much, but there was little to no metal used in this world. She’d mostly read about copper or bronze being used and the original owner also had some memories of them too.
However, it was mainly for jewelry for high ranking beastwomen to show wealth because of the amount of work it took to find and make the metal into something. Of course, this was within the forest region.
From what she remembered copper and bronze were found more in the eastern and northern regions of the Beast Continent. Of course, there could be some ore here, but it was likely no one had found it yet.
And with that kind of knowledge safely guarded like healing knowledge she doubted any rando could understand that they were stumbling across metal ore. Or even know how to make use of it.
However, if that knowledge was more widespread it could lead to more metal development. And considering how human history went when metal became more commonly used. Well, it was both good and bad.
But she was going to look at the benefits. They could develop much better tools for farming as well as other things for daily use. Weapons were an option too, but Serena wasn’t sure if introducing more weaponry was a good idea.
Then again it could give the rabbit beastmen a better fighting chance against predator type beastmen and perhaps further down the line help with hunting monster hordes.
But she was getting ahead of herself.
This was only if the coordinates were a location to metal. And if it was then she’d still need to find a way to obtain it and then manufacture it. Something she had little knowledge on.
But even if it wasn’t metal like she hoped, it was still worth the risk. She was bound to do the requirements too complete the mission anyway. Might as well get some rewards for it.
"Alright then." Serena finally said. "I’ll accept this mission."
