A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 98: System Is Back Online
The next day, Liz was still unavailable, which had Serena a little annoyed, but she continued her day as normal. Theo prepared breakfast while she went to go check on the wild birds.
One was dozing in the nesting area, but the other two were already wandering around the garden. They were cautious around her, so Serena was careful not to disturb them as she changed their water and added more vegetable scraps from breakfast into the food bowl.
There were some wild bird droppings in the coop and Serena’s nose twitched at the smell, making a mental note to clean the coop up after lunch. She needed to get some more clean straw and find some grains for the wild birds.
If she could even find grains around this time of the year. Even if she couldn’t, she needed to find another food to diversify the wild birds’ diet. Once she was done, she headed back to the hut to see Kiro was now awake and washing his face.
She cleaned her hands before joining Theo by the fire. Breakfast was soon done and the trio quickly ate and then cleaned up. After Theo left with Jason, Serena got her basket ready.
She was preparing to harvest some more vegetables and search for some grains for the wild birds. She’d then gather some more cotton in the afternoon. Kiro decided he wanted to join her in the afternoon and Serena agreed to it.
The pair of siblings then headed to the village center, Serena using the excuse to drop Kiro there as a way to meet with Emma, so she could ask the rabbit beastwoman about getting more strips for the baskets.
Thankfully, the beastwoman was sitting in her usual spot and after chatting for a bit, they agreed to exchange seven large baskets worth of strips for two baskets of long, orange squash.
The rabbit beastwoman originally offered to do it free of charge, but Serena wasn’t hearing it. She demanded paying Emma for the strips and so they settled on Serena paying her with two baskets.
It wasn’t completely fair in Serena’s eyes, but the rabbit beastwoman refused any more, saying she wouldn’t take advantage of Serena because she was struggling with so few males around.
Serena didn’t really agree with that, thinking her and Theo were just fine at the moment. However, the other villagers didn’t seem to think that way.
Not wanting to waste time arguing, Serena soon headed out, promising to pay Emma half a basket everyday across four days since it would take some time for all the strips to be made. She’d get them in parts too.
It took her a few minutes of walking to find the long, orange squash patches and Serena immediately set to work harvesting them. She was halfway through with filling up her basket when a new system notification appeared.
[System Rebooted]
[Thank you for your patience. 200 coins have been added.]
Serena furrowed her eyebrows at the message, thinking that it was about time that this nonsense ended. The coins were clearly hush money to ignore what happened.
Not that Serena would. She would need to be more careful in future. That was once she figured out how much information had been blocked. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Liz popped up a moment later, appearing in its blue snake form wrapped around her upper arm. Serena gazed at the system for a second before she decided to just bite the bullet.
"What happened?" Serena asked, going back to harvesting squash.
"System error." Liz answered vaguely, making Serena frown despite sort of expecting that answer.
"What kind of error?" Serena probed. "Do you remember what we were chatting about? Can you recall anything?"
Liz opened its mouth to speak, closing it again before it finally said, "Yesterday’s logs have been lost due to a bug. More information is not available."
"Hah..." Serena shook her head.
So, not only was all that precious intel removed from Liz, but so were its memories from yesterday. And all thanks to the bug called the system creator not wanting her to learn the true nature of the system.
It kind of made her wonder if her theory about Liz’s soul being the original owner was true. Of course, even if that theory was true, it made her wonder how a story from her world seemed to exist in real life.
There were so many things she hadn’t thought about and now they were beginning to create a pile of unanswered questions. Which was annoying Serena to no end.
She took a deep breath to calm herself from the raging thoughts. If there was one thing she’d learnt from her time exploring unknown planets, it was being patient.
She couldn’t rush this and needed to wait for the right chance to strike. For now, she could get intel from Merinda now that Liz was useless. Grow in strength and get to a level where she could access more information.
"Is something the matter?" Liz asked curiously.
"Hmm... Oh, it’s nothing." Serena answered, turning her attention back to the blue snake. "Could you just locate where any grains are within this forest? Oh and make sure they can be eaten by wild birds. Other foods they eat will be good too."
"Understood." Liz said as its eyes flashed for a second. "Currently searching area.... Please wait...."
It was cheating a little making use of the system’s locating feature, but it wasn’t like she was going to use it any other time. Might as well make use of it and reduce her time searching for things.
As Liz went to work searching for the grains and food Serena had requested, Serena continued harvesting some more long, orange squash.
Just as she filled up her basket, Liz suddenly spoke up, "Search completed."
A second later the system world map popped up and zoomed in on the forest area Serena was currently in. Much of the area was still dark since she hadn’t explored it and her current location was marked.
And about two kilometers south from her current location was the location of the grains she wanted.
