A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 16: Love happened to me

"Love happened to me. That thing called love is a plague,a disease and a putrefying illness that is capable of blinding the eyes, paralysing the sense of reasoning and strong enough to inject its victim with the venom called stupidity that has no cure.

That was what happened to me. It’s love that plagued me and ruined me, leaving me with a wounded heart that would never heal soon" Lara responded, her tears giving way.

She sniffled and wiped her tears with a tissue. The atmosphere within the car suddenly went silent except for Lara’s sniffle.

"I’m sorry" Kayla Davis apologised. She didn’t expect that Lara had this to say about love. Love has injured her innocent mind and left deep holes and scars behind.

But she was simply unfortunate in love. Real love still exists. Sweet love, filled with romance and appreciation. There are moments of misunderstanding but they will be sorted out with love.

Doesn’t love conquer all errors?

They arrived at a booth. Kayla ordered for drinks but Lara insisted on not taking anything else besides a glass of wine. Her reason was, she just had lunch shortly before they ran into each other.

Meanwhile, at this moment, Rodney was working out things. He realized that Lara was divorced because she was cheated on by her husband. And the woman he cheated on her with, was a close acquaintance of hers.

Further investigation revealed something vital. He couldn’t believe his eyes. But why would that dude do that to his wife? Doesn’t he love her at all?

Her experience was a little similar to his in some ways. But then,was that the reason she became mannerless and rude? An orphan who was raised by her grandmother.

And her grandma also died recently, obviously after being fired by him. Anyways, that’s not his business. What he is interested in, was having custody of his baby when he is born.

Bodyguards were to constantly stalk her and protect her. No harm should come to her and thereby affecting his unborn child. He needs to know details about her every day.

But something is important. He needs to see that woman again. Without hesitation,he ordered Lazarus Doe to find out her whereabouts.

In that state of mind, Rodney’s phone chirped. Without glancing at it,he knows who the caller is: his mother.

"Mum," he said as soon as he answered the phone. It’s been two weeks since he last saw his mother. She’s probably checking on him.

"How’re you son?" Lisa Rodney asked. It’s been two weeks and she hasn’t spoken to her son. But now that there’s an important issue the family has to discuss, he needs to be around.

"There’s going to be a family dinner tomorrow. Ensure you come around. Laura will be here too, along with her husband and daughter" Lisa informed.

Laura was Curtis best friend and sister before she got married. Being the only kids of the family, the two love each other very much. And that love got extended to Laura’s husband Frederick Biden.

"Alright mum, I should be there" Curtis responded. He hadn’t seen Frederick since he returned from Spain. It’s nice to be with his family again.

"...you mean that dude cheated on you with Tayo? Oh gosh! I feel like seeing them both and scratching their faces, huh..." Kayla was furious.

What on earth is wrong with that bitch, how can she do that to Lara, having affairs with her friend’s husband and even getting pregnant in the act?

"Let’s forget about those bunch of betrayers. Let’s talk about you Kayla. How’s Joel and you darling?" Lara asked, seeming brightened up.

"We’re doing fine together. We’ll be getting married soon and that’s why we returned to Michigan. He’d gotten a better offer with a company and simultaneously, I got hired by Millennium entertainment center as its chief designer..." Kayla explained.

Lara immediately connected it. It’s Curtis Rodney’s company who hired Kayla. In order for her not to feel uncomfortable,she didn’t mention to her that she got hired and fired the same day she resumed.

"Congratulations to you both. I’m so happy for you" Lara chimed, taking Kayla’s hands, giving it a soft squeeze. She knows they both would make a great couple.

Joel is a great guy, well cultured and doting on Kayla. She’s happy for her. They chatted for so long that Lara momentarily forgot that she was feeling unhappy about her lunch with Dr JJ Smart when she met Kayla.

"Finally now that you’re out of that shithole you mistook for a marriage, you’ve gotten it right?" Kayla asked, excitement washing over her.

She’s more than certain that with Kayla’s beauty and brain, coupled with being a working class woman,she would attract suitable men to her.

In no time, she’ll find a lover that would clear her doubts that love isn’t a plague but a feeling of bliss. She’ll be glad she left that idiot and wished she’d done that earlier.

"I don’t have a job yet. But I’ve been submitting applications to some companies and I have drafts that I would be willing to sell" Lara responded.

"Oh no!" Kayla felt disappointed but quickly she continued "I’ll help you get one soon. I’ll arrange for interviews for you at the millennium entertainment center and other places where our services are highly prioritized.."

"All right thanks" Lara appreciated. But if it’s Curtis Rodney’s company or any among his companies,she wouldn’t be attending the interviews.

That night, Lara couldn’t sleep. She was happy that she met Kayla and her heavy heart became lightened. But how about Dr JJ Smart?

Is she really going to jail because of the baby in her belly? Is she going to lose her practicing license and still serve jail terms? Is that how brutal that dude is?

Such a young man has no sympathy at all? Maybe she should abort the pregnancy after all and end it. Maybe she doesn’t need to go for an insemination again, hanging out with some random men in a club wouldn’t be a bad idea.

A one night stand would save her all this trouble with Curtis Rodney. She would sleep over it and decide what she would be doing next.

That night, Curtis Rodney was by the balcony of his mansion smoking. He would puff his cigarette and watch it writhing away.

How can a woman with such an undignified past, carry his baby in her belly? And to know that she doesn’t feel intrigued to bask in the euphoria of his generous offer, amazes him.

Does he need to give her a higher offer? Does she really deserve it? Maybe there’s only one option for her, she either accepts it willingly or finds herself bending to it against her will.

He is Curtis Rodney, the business mogul in Michigan. No one dares him,no one has the temerity to turn down his offer and no one ever did except this siren.

With a final decision, he made up his mind to see her one last time. She either accepts his generous offer, or crawls back to him begging to be given a chance.

Next morning, Lara woke up with a smile. Still laying in bed,she decided that come what may, abortion is not an option. She saw two kids running towards her. They’re so cute and adorable. She hugged them in a beautiful embrace and then she woke up.
