Chapter 37: Not necessary

Lara gasped at his words.

Curtis knew that she was about to object to his proclamation, but he wasn’t about to give her a chance to start speaking and definitely refusing again.

So he turned to Lazarus Doe and issued a command. "I want each and every single piece of her belonging to be cleared out of the mini villa before an hour is up."

Lazarus nodded, and Lara, who was still too stunned to speak, stared at Curtis with a dazed look on her face.

Curtis turned to Benny next.

"Whenever I am not around, please make sure you’re with her every single hour. I don’t want even a single hair on her body to be in pain. Is that understood?" he asked the woman.

The nanny nodded. Then he turned to his stubborn, beautiful and pregnant contracted wife.

"Get in the car, Lara."

"But..."

"If you say one more word, believe me, you’re not going to like what I will do to you next. Get. Into. The. Fucking. Car."

There was so much force in his words that Lara snapped her mouth shut. And she walked back into the car.

When she realised that Curtis was driving her back to the hospital, she shook her head and clapped her hands together in a rude manner.

"You’re very insufferable. My Goodness, it’s like talking to a damn wall."

He didn’t look back at her as he responded.

"Glad to see that your mouth has been unsealed. See, the thing with you is that you don’t understand. I am doing everything for you. For the babies. I need them to be safe. You have to understand," he stated, and a hint of desperation slipped into his voice.

Lara sighed. She understood him. She really did. But some times, most times, Lara thought that he was too much.

When they got to the hospital, the nurses were surprised to see them again.

But Curtis paid them no heed. He led a tired Lara to the doctor’s office.

The doctor smiled at their entrance.

"Mr. Rodney. Always a pleasure to see you again," the man greeted. Curtis nodded back and stated his business.

"Doctor. It has been brought to my attention that my wife will be experiencing something referred to as morning sickness. I figured out that it’s normal, but I need you to tell me some do’s and don’ts about it. Don’t miss out on any detail," he ordered.

The man, without mincing words, started to speak. He patiently explained to Curtis that Lara must not be allowed to do any strenuous work. She should satisfy each of her cravings as the pregnancy dictates, and there should be a lot of bed rest.

Curtis listened attentively, and when the doctor was done, he led Lara back into the car.

They drove back home, and true to his words, Lazarus Doe had moved each and every one of Lara’s belongings into Curtis main villa.

"Come on. Let’s get the babies inside," he called out to her. Lara hesitated for one small, tiny moment.

"Curtis. You don’t have to do this," she insisted, trying to change his mind.

Curtis held out his hand and shook his head.

"Those babies are my life, Lara. And I have told you times without number. You will do whatever I want as long as they are in you."

Knowing that she has been cornered, she said nothing and followed him inside.

And from that day onwards, Lara was spoilt rotten by her contracted husband.

Curtis started to think more and more about Lara. She occupied his mind so frequently that he started staying back at home to watch over her.

The morning sickness got worse, and his worries multiplied. He nagged her to the extent Lara started taking our her anger on him, but he stayed.

One midnight, Lara woke up crying. Curtis, who was virtually working on his system, heard the sound and immediately rushed to her room.

"Heyy. What is wrong? Why are you crying?" he asked softly.

Lara said nothing. She had no explanation for why she was crying, only that she felt too emotional and was unable to keep it in.

Curtis sat down at the edge of her bed and asked her again.

"Is there anything you want me to get for you? Please stop crying. You are making me worried."

"Just go away," Lara whined.

The pregnancy was affecting her entire demeanor, and she was starting to have terrible mood swings.

Lara knew that she didn’t mean what she said by asking him to leave. But she was a woman with two growing babies inside her, and her emotions were a mess.

"Don’t ask me to leave you alone. Not when you’re like this. What can I do to help? Should I take you to the hospital?" he insisted.

At the sound of the hospital, Lara’s tears intensified. Anger trickled into her body, and she raised tears filled eyes to him.

"Is that all that you know? Going to the hospital every damn second? I don’t want to go to the hospital, okay? I want ice cream. And pizza with pepperoni. I also wanted strawberry shortcake, and a can of soda. That is all I want. Is that too much to ask for?" she yelled, her tears sliding down her face much faster than before.

"It’s okay. I’m sorry. I am so sorry. I won’t take you to the hospital. And I will get you everything that you want. Just stop crying, okay?" he pleaded.

Lara just wailed harder, and Curtis, determined to stop her tears, strode out of his room. He dialed Lazarus Doe, and in a few minutes, his bodyguard arrived in the house.

Without minding that it was in the middle of the night, Curtis ordered Lazarus to get every single thing his wife requested for.

As his bodyguard saluted and left, something started to dawn on Curtis.

The man realised a painful truth. That he would do anything as long as it made Lara happy.

He wanted to convince himself that he was doing it because of the babies.

But Curtis knew better. He knew that everything he was doing was because he was gradually falling in love with her.

Curtis Rodney was falling in love with his accidental surrogate.
