Chapter 40: Confrontation

Lara gasped at the sheer nerve of her mother in law. What the actual hell?

How dare this woman walk in and blatantly accuse her of cheating?

Enraged, she took a step closer, ready to give the woman a piece of her mind. Before she could do anything though, Curtis stepped in.

He grabbed his mother’s arm and firmly turned her to face him. Then he said, "I warned you, mother. I told you to leave. But you insisted on staying. And now you have crossed a line."

His words were delivered so coldly that it sent a shiver down Lara’s spine. Lisa paled at her son’s defiant expression, and she took a step back from him.

"Never in my life have I ever imagined that my own son would choose another woman over me. But it is happening. Right before me. My life is over. I can’t believe this," she said, shaking her head at Curtis.

Curtis, who was done with her bullshit, refused to be moved by her words.

"Leave," he said coldly.

"Even when I tell you that she’s cheating on you, you still decide to stay with her?"

Curtis’s jaw ticked.

"I asked you to leave, Mother."

Lisa’s lips trembled.

"You can do better than this. Better than her. That child in her belly is not yours. Has never been. You have to listen to me," she insisted.

Curtis’s anger crested a wave, and he exploded.

"I am the father of the children in her belly! They belong to me, as she does. I don’t know, and I frankly don’t care about whatever bullshit you and the rest of the family thinks about me, but I am man enough to take care of my fucking love life. Now leave me the fuck alone and stop trying to dictate my life!" he yelled in her face, and veins threatened to pop out of his head.

Lara stepped closer to him and gently placed a hand on his arm. He looked so dangerous, so pissed in that moment that even Lara was scared of him.

But his mother, Lisa, was stunned. She looked at him long and hard, as if she was just seeing him for the first time.

She took a step closer to her son. There were no tears in her eyes anymore, and her resolve was evident on her face.

"You’ll regret this, Curtis. You’ll regret it so much, and when you do, I will be there to rub it in your face. I will be there to tell you ’I told you so.’ I will mock you. I will laugh in your face with not even an ounce of sympathy. And then I will turn my back on you. Just like you already have turned on your family because of a common slut."

Then she turned away from him and walked out of the room.

Silence stretched between Curtis and Lara, thick and almost visible. Lara was at a loss for words, and Curtis...Curtis was so mad that he wanted to break stuff.

He had never felt this enraged before. His blood boiled dangerously, and he knew he had to leave.

Staying with Lara might bring her to harm and he wasn’t willing to cause her any pain, either physically or emotionally.

Lara cleared her throat to speak. "Curtis..." she started to say, but he was too far gone in his head to pay her any heed.

Without saying one more word, he turned around and walked away from her. Lara gaped at the suddenness of his actions.

She had expected him to at least say something, anything. But he had just walked out on her.

A mixture of disappointment and fear slammed into her. She wasn’t sure what he was thinking about.

Did he really believe that she was cheating on him? Did he speak to his mother like that just to save face from getting embarrassed?

Did he see her as a cheater?

Lara scoffed. That was impossible. Even though their agreement was fake and not real, she would never stoop as low as sleeping with another man.

Not while she was pregnant with his — their — children. Not while she had made a deal with him.

It would be utterly terrible of her to do such a thing.

But what if he actually believed his mother’s words?

Lara cursed inwardly. If he did believe those lies, then he would definitely turn her life into a living hell.

Knowing the man she signed a contract with, she was in deep trouble if her thought process turned out to be true.

She needed to do something about it before it was too late. She needed to let him know that she would never do such a thing.

Lara ran out of her room. Where could he have gone?

Her mind raced as she called his name fruitlessly. Turning into the living room, she was relieved to see Lazarus Doe.

Curtis’s bodyguard gave her a small nod as he saw her.

She stopped running and stood before him.

"Where is he?" she asked, not bothering with any pleasantries.

Lazarus raised his eyebrows.

"Who are you talking about, ma’am?" he asked.

Lara stamped down on a wave of anger.

"Don’t you dare play dumb with me right now, Lazarus! Where the fuck is Curtis? Where did he run off to?" she snapped.

Lazarus Doe sighed.

"I’m not sure you want to go to him right now. He is in a really terrible mood," the bodyguard cautioned.

"Just shut up and tell me where he is," she quipped.

Knowing that she won’t back down, Lazarus gave in.

He told her where Curtis was.

And without saying another word, Lara grabbed the car key he was holding and dashed out of the house.

She couldn’t let Curtis believe that she was cheating on him.

Because she would never.

Without thinking through what she was doing, Lara started the car and began to drive.

Lisa, on the other hand, felt thoroughly humiliated. Never in her entire existence had she imagined what just happened to her.

Curtis had always been a good child. He listened to his parents. He did whatever they asked him to do. He was careful. He never took the wrong steps.

But all of that seemed to have changed in him. He had embarrassed and insulted his own mother because of a woman.

Lisa’s ego was bruised beyond repair. She couldn’t take what just happened like that.

She had to fight back. She had to deliver her son from the evil witch that was controlling him.

And to do that, Lisa knew what she had to do.

She had to get rid of Lara. Make sure she never exists again.
