Chapter 50: Opened Secret

Mike knocked on Tolu’s office and poked his head inside.

"Hey, baby. Can I come in?" he asked. She looked up from her laptop and cocked her head to the side. There was a small smile on her face.

"Yeah, sure," she said after a long moment. Mike walked in and closed the door behind him.

He cleared his throat. "Look, I just want to apologise. I was... wrong. I made you feel like I was still in love with Lara. But I am not. You are the only woman for me, and you know that. My reaction was just...I hated seeing her pregnant, is all. She means nothing to me. I am sorry," he said quietly.

There was obvious sincerity in his voice, and he looked slightly sheepish as he stared at Tolu.

Tolu’s smile broadened at his words, and she stood up. She walked towards Mike with her hands outstretched, and he fell into her hug without missing a step.

"It’s fine, darling. I owe you an apology too. I am sorry for not trusting you. For doubting the love and affection you have for me. Lara is the devil’s tool that is sent to keep us apart, and we should not allow her to win. It’s fine. We’re good," she said sweetly.

The tense muscles in Mike’s body immediately relaxed at her words. He had thought that he would have to keep pleading before she accepted his apology, but apparently not.

They held each other for a long while before Tolu stepped away from the hug.

"Since everything is settled, what do you say we will go out for dinner later tonight?" she asked.

"Sure. What’s the celebration?" he asked in return. Tolu shrugged, but there was a spring in her step as she walked back to her desk.

"Nothing much. Just...cheers to finally getting rid of useless things once and for all, I guess?" she said casually.

Mike’s brows furrowed into a slight frown. That statement was oddly specific, and a terrified chill ran down his spine.

But a part of him was too scared to ask her if she meant anything by what she said. She seemed to be in a good mood, and Mike was not willing to change that.

Tolu can be very very cruel whenever she is mad.

And right now, Mike was not in the mood to deal with her pissiness. So he pushed that terrible feeling that was crawling up his spine away and smiled at her.

"Anything you want, baby. Anything you want," he said.

She beamed at him and he walked out.

But no matter how much Mike tried not to think about it, his thoughts kept going back to Lara.

The most prominent question in his head was: Who was responsible for her pregnancy?

~~

Tolu was ecstatic.

Even if Mike had not apologised, she would have forgiven him. Because what was there not to forgive, really?

Nothing mattered anymore. It didn’t matter if Mike was still hung up over Lara, because Tolu now had a real plan to get rid of that woman once and for all.

To even make things better was the fact that Tolu would not be working alone anymore. She had the full backing and support of the richest and one of the most influential women in the entire country.

Lisa Rodney.

A slight wave of jealousy slammed into Tolu as she recalled everything that the woman had told her.

Lara had managed to snag the perfect man for herself. It was unfair to hear that Curtis was apparently in love with that bitch.

Why had Tolu not been the one to catch that man’s attention?

It was not as though Lara was prettier or better than she was. She was just lucky.

But now, Tolu was ready to take that luck away from her. It didn’t matter if she was with Curtis now, she would not be with him for much longer.

Because Tolu and Lisa had a plan, and that plan had been set in motion.

There was no way Lara was going to get out of the trap already laid for her.

No way.

Satisfaction rolled through her, and there was a smile on her face as she continued to work.

~~

The next day, both Mike and Tolu ran into Lara again in the elevator.

Lara rolled her eyes as they walked in, but there was some sort of determination in her shoulders as she held their gazes.

Mike avoided looking at Lara, which suited her just fine. She was not willing to deal with his nonsensical attitude.

Tolu however, stepped up to Lara. There was a weird, dangerous gleam in her eyes, and it made Lara shiver slightly.

Her ex best friend looked crazy, like a manic. And a large part of Lara wondered why and how Tolu had even been her best friend in the first place.

"You work here now," Tolu said. It was not a question. It was an affirmation.

Lara said nothing. She was determined not to entertain either of them.

Tolu was not discouraged at all. She only moved closer and continued to speak.

"You finally realised that spreading your legs around is the only way for you to get a job? Took you long enough, to be honest. I have always waited for you to come to your senses about your mediocre skills. Welcome to the dark side," Tolu said, and there was a mocking edge to her words.

Lara stiffened at the implication in Tolu’s words.

"Not everyone is a slut like you, Tolu. So shut the fuck up and leave me alone," she snapped.

Mike froze at the exchange, but he still did not interfere. Tolu’s smile only grew wider.

She leaned closer to Lara until they were inches apart, and then she whispered, taking care not to let Mike hear what she was about to say.

"Stop pretending to be a saint, Lara. You are a slut and you know it. How else could you have gotten pregnant with Curtis Rodney?"

Lara’s heart stopped beating. Her eyes grew as wide as saucers, and her blood stopped flowing in her veins.

Her jaw dropped open.

How the hell did Tolu figure out her secret? Lara tried to backtrack.

"What nonsense are you talking about, Tolu?" she said, trying to keep her voice from shaking.

"Stop trying to pretend, you bitch. I already know the truth, and there is nothing you can do about it."

It was too late. Lara’s secret was out in the open.

The elevator dinged and stopped. Tolu reached out and patted her stomach.

"Have fun while you still can, Lara. Because that safe haven you thought you found, it is going to crumble

around you soon enough."
