Chapter 58: Don’t push me away

It has been two weeks since Lara was poisoned, and she still wasn’t awake.

Curtis spent every waking moment with her. She was placed in a VIP ward, so he took all his baths in the ward’s hospital rather than going all the way home.

Lazarus brought clothes for him straight from the house, as well as his laptop. Curtis did not work the way he used to, but he checked on stuff from time to time.

The rest of his attention however, was on his wife. His still, unconscious wife.

Curtis was worried with each day that passed. He badly wanted her to wake up, to speak to him. To smile at him.

He wanted her to wake up and act sassy like she used to. He missed her so much even though he spent every waking hour beside her.

He missed Lara so much that his heart has been in a constant state of longing.

But more than ever, his love for her deepened. She was, without mincing words, the absolute love of his life.

Curtis hadn’t realised how much he depended on her, how much he thought about her, until now.

He had no idea how much he loved her, until he held her hand in the hospital ward, waiting for her to wake up.

The door opened and a nurse stepped in. She smiled and nodded at Curtis as she walked towards the bed.

"Hello, Mr. Curtis. You have a visitor," she stated.

Curtis turned his attention back to his unconscious wife.

"Send whoever it is away," he said, his words and voice coming out in a dismissive manner.

"She asked me to tell you that she’s your... mother," the nurse stated again.

And Curtis felt a pang of anger at her words. Of all the people he didn’t want to see at all, his mother was definitely one of them.

His lips stretched into a thin line.

"Tell her to get lost. I don’t want to see anybody," he quipped.

The nurse looked uncomfortable, but she said nothing else. Instead, she nodded and walked out.

Curtis heaved a deep sigh. His mother had been trying to reach him for days now, but he didn’t pick any of her calls.

Why should he, after what she did?

She wasn’t worth even the smallest silver of Curtis’s attention.

The door opened again, and Curtis had to suppress an annoyed sigh. He turned to face the door with a sharp retort ready on his tongue.

But when he came face to face with his mother, his anger surged.

"Hello, Curtis," Lisa said with a small smile. Curtis stood up.

"I thought I made it pretty clear to the nurse that I wanted you to get lost," he said, and there was a sharp edge to his voice.

Lisa sighed and stepped forward.

"Come on, darling. Don’t be ridiculous. I am your mother. You can’t speak to me in that manner," she said softly.

Curtis’s expression didn’t change.

He stared into his mother’s eyes with cold, rage filled eyes.

"Get out, Lisa," he deadpanned.

She gasped softly at the sound of her given name.

"Stop this madness, Curtis. I understand that you’re mad. You are hurt and you are angry and you feel betrayed. And your feelings are very valid, my love. Just...stop icing me out, okay? What I did was wrong, and I know that. But she’s fine. She is alive and that should be all that matters. Please, my son. Forgive me."

Lisa’s words were delivered with so much sincerity that a lesser man would have been convinced.

But not Curtis.

He snarled and took a step closer to his mother.

"Stop icing you out? All that matters is that she is alive? Are you even listening to yourself, Mother? Can you even...you know what? Get out. Get the fuck out of this place," he snapped.

"Don’t. Don’t push me away, my son. I came here to comfort you. I am your mother, no matter what happens. You are going to have to forgive me."

It seemed as her patience was limitless, but Curtis wasn’t having none of her bullshit.

"Get out," he yelled. Lisa ignored him and cocked her head to to stare at the door.

"You can come in now," she called to whoever was there.

The door opened and someone stepped in.

Amanda.

Curtis’ anger erupted. His jaw tightened with rage, and he took a threatening step towards the woman.

"Get out," he snapped.

Lisa stepped before him, protecting Amanda.

"Don’t be rude, Curtis. You owe that woman an apology," she quipped back at him, and he whirled his head to face her, disbelief evident in his expression.

"What?"

Lisa went on.

"You had her arrested. That was bad conduct on your end and you should apologise to her right now."

Curtis was about to lose his shit.

"If you don’t get the hell out of my sight, I am going to do things to you that will make you regret ever knowing me. Get your filthy self out of this place. Now!"

He was yelling now, and Amanda started to tremble.

Lisa stood up to her son.

"She is just here to help! You have been staying in this ward for weeks! I know you want to look after that woman but you need someone to look after you too! That is what she is where for! To provide a helping hand!"

Curtis roared and rammed his hand into the nearest wall.

Lisa took a shocked step away from him.

"She is not that woman! My wife is not to be referred to as that woman! Her name is Lara and I am absolutely, madly in love with her!"

He took a deep breath and went on.

"And you tried to kill her. You had her poisoned, so don’t you dare walk in here to give me bullshit about how you are my mother. No sane mother would want to kill the woman her son’s heart beats for! My heart beats for Lara. She’s the only one I want, and there is nothing you can do about it. And I meant it when I said that I want nothing to do with you. NOTHING. I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!"

Lisa was shell shocked. She had never been spoken to in that manner before, and especially not from her son.

Her lips started to tremble as tears slid down her face, but Curtis ignored her. He turned to face Amanda.

"And as for you, even if you were the only woman left in a virus infested world, I would not look at you twice. I’ll rather die single and alone than to be with someone like you, Amanda. So get the hell out of my face. I never want to see you ever again!"

The silence that descended over the room was filled with tension.

Curtis turned back to face his unconscious wife, only to find Lara staring at him with wide eyes.

Lara was awake, and she had heard every single word he just said.
