Chapter 94: Thrown out

Lara felt as though her entire world was at the edge of a cliff, and that it was about to fall.

Dizziness slammed into her, and she wavered where she stood.

She gaped at Lazarus.

"What...what did you just say?" Lara asked. Her voice was small and quiet, and her vision blurred as she stared at the bodyguard.

Lazarus took a stop closer to her.

"I’m sorry, ma’am. The doctor said that they had done everything they could do for him. And that all we can do right now is to wait. The doctor added that waking up is left to him," the bodyguard explained.

Lara felt as though she was falling.

How could that have happened? What if he never woke up again?

What if he...died?

Fear and Panic wrapped around Lara, and she suddenly found it hard to breathe.

"What...what room is he in?" she asked. Her voice was cracked, and tears threatened to slide down her face.

But Lara swallowed the tears and stood her ground.

She shouldn’t think bad things. Curtis was going to wake up. The coma would fade away as soon as possible, and her husband was going to be all right.

Lazarus mentioned the ward room, but Lara had no idea where it was.

So the bodyguard offered to take her there.

Silence stretched between them as they walked and Lara’s heart pounded in her chest as they got closer to the ward.

He was going to be fine. He had to be, there was no other choice.

If he didn’t wake up, Lara didn’t even want to think about how her life would turn out.

So she pushed the thoughts of death away and focused on the fact that he was still alive and still breathing.

Lazarus stopped before what looked like a private ward, and he gestured towards the door.

"Here he is, ma’am. Would you like me to go inside with you or do you want to be alone?" he asked.

Before Lara could answer though, the door opened from the inside and Laura, Curtis’s sister, walked out.

She paused at the sight of Lara and the bodyguard, and she quickly stepped out of the ward and closed the door behind her.

"What are you doing here?" the woman asked. Lara narrowed her eyes on Laura.

"What do you think I am doing here? I am here to see my husband, Laura. Please step away from the door and let me in," Lara stated calmly.

Laura glanced at the door and stepped forward. She cleared her throat before she spoke again.

"No, you don’t understand. My mother is in there," Laura stated.

Lara raised her eyebrows at her husband’s sister.

"Yeah? And so? I just want to see how my husband is doing. Your mom doesn’t have to leave. We can both stay with him," Lara objected.

Laura shook her head, looking slightly exasperated.

"She is not going to let you in there," she said.

Lara scoffed at the words.

"And why, exactly, will she do that?"

Laura was frustrated. She wished she could explain to Lara that her mother had made up her mind to ensure that Lara doesn’t see Curtis at all.

But before she could say anything again, Lara stepped forward and held her gaze.

"I don’t know what game you’re playing right now, but I don’t care. Please, step away from the door and let me in," Lara quipped.

Her voice was firm and unyielding, and Laura realised that Lara wasn’t going to believe whatever she said.

Curtis’s sister ran a hand through her hair and sighed.

"Fine. Don’t say I didn’t warn you," she stated and stepped away from the door.

Lara turned to face Lazarus, who was still standing quietly in the hallway.

"You can leave if you want to, Lazarus. I think I am going to spend some time here," she said.

The bodyguard gave her a curt nod. Lara smiled at him, opened the door, and stepped in.

Lisa was sitting on a chair placed at the side of Curtis’s bed, and the old woman looked up at the sound of Lara’s footsteps.

Lisa’s eyes narrowed as she stared at Lara.

"What do you think you’re doing here?" she asked.

Lara stopped walking. Her brows were furrowed in confusion, and she tried to figure out why the hell Lisa was asking such a stupid question.

"What kind of question is that? Of course I am here to see my husband," Lara responded sharply.

Lisa shook her head.

"Oh no. I don’t think that’s going to happen. Get out," she snapped.

Lara’s confusion deepened.

"What do you mean? Why should I get out? My husband is sick and in a coma. I should be in here with him," She said sharply.

Lisa gently let go of her son’s hand and stood up. She took several steps towards Lara, and Lara saw deep seated rage mixed with hatred in the woman’s eyes.

"Stop calling him your husband! He is not your husband. And you are not his wife. You’ve ruined his life enough, Lara. Please leave. Leave this hospital room and leave his life. Let him recover in peace. He doesn’t need you. He won’t want you again by the time he wakes up. Stop wasting your time and leave. Get out."

Each word was delivered so cruelly that it hit Lara harder than she expected.

She took a step back from Lisa, but her hand curled into fists.

"You can’t stop me from staying with him. I don’t care what you believe. Curtis is my husband. I will stay by his side until he wakes up and nothing is going to stop me!"

Lara’s words were firm and resolute, but Lisa was unmoved.

Curtis’s mother smirked and stepped back. Then she clapped her hands twice.

The ward door opened, and three men stepped in. They were large and muscular, and they looked dangerous.

Lisa smiled sweetly at them.

"Get this woman out of here. And on no account should she be able to walk back in here. She is not to be allowed back into this room. Ever," she ordered.

The men nodded at her words and grabbed Lara.

"What the hell do you think you’re doing? Let me go!" Lara snapped, but neither of the guys listened to her.

They threw her out of the ward, and stood before the door, barring the entrance.

Lara could only gape in astonishment as Lisa shut the door in her face.
