A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 98: A chance to see him
Lara tried not to cry as she held her husband’s cold, unmoving hand.
"I am so sorry, Curtis. I...I didn’t mean to...I only wanted the corn dogs. And I...if I had known something like this would happen, I wouldn’t have made you stop for those damned corn dogs. I am so sorry, my love," she whispered.
Tears stung the back of her eyes, and she rapidly blinked them away. Curtis would not want her to cry for any reason, and even though he was the current cause of her tears, she was still trying not to cry.
A part of her wished that his hand would at least move, squeeze hers back. She also wanted him to open his eyes, smile at her and tell her that he was okay.
But his body had betrayed him, and all he could do was lay there, unconscious and unaware of his environment.
"I miss you so much. Please fight back and come back to me, my love. I love you," she said.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket.
Lara sighed as she brought it out, and it was a text message from Laura.
The message read: "You need to leave that room, now. My mother is on her way back."
Lara pushed back a wave of annoyance at the text. She wasn’t mad at Laura for sending her that message.
No. She was pissed at her mother in law for making her sneak around just to see her husband.
Lara stood up and leaned down to kiss her husband on the forehead.
"I’ll be back to see you, Curtis. Your mother is being a bitch, but I’ll find a way and come back," she promised and walked out of the ward.
Laura was walking down the hallway, and she gave a curt nod at Lara, not waiting to talk.
The moment Lara turned a corner, she heard Lisa’s voice.
Lara’s heart pounded in her chest. If Laura had stooped to talk to her, then Lisa would have caught them.
As Lara slowly made her way back to her ward, her mind spun with thoughts.
Why was she running away?
And from Lisa, of all people?
Lara knew that Curtis’ mother was aware of the fact that if Curtis was awake, she wouldn’t be the one sitting next to him.
Lisa knew that her son wanted nothing to do with her as long as she hated Lara, and yet here she was, abusing her power and stopping Lara from seeing her husband.
Lara slowly stopped walking. The more she thought about those things, the more she remembered all of the horrible things Lisa had done to her, the more anger burned in her veins.
How dare Lisa try to stop her from seeing Curtis?
How dare she try to act like a mother now, after days of constantly trying to harm her son’s wife?
Before she could think about it, Lara whirled around and started to march back to Curtis’s ward.
Lisa had no right to stop her from seeing her husband.
And Lara was sick of being scared of her mother in law.
The bodyguards at the door did not stop Lara as she walked into the ward, and Lisa’s eyebrows flew upwards as she took in Lara’s sudden appearance.
Curtis’s mother stood up, and her eyes were wide with anger as she stormed towards Lara.
"What do you think you’re doing? Get out!" she snapped.
Laura and Adrian stood up too, but neither of them stepped closer.
Lara held her mother in law’s gaze coldly, and her jaw tightened with resolution as she responded.
"No."
Lisa scoffed. "No? You are not allowed here and you know it. Now get the hell out if you don’t want to get thrown out again," she threatened.
Lara took a step closer to the other woman.
"And why am I not allowed here? I have every right to be in this hospital room and you know it. So no, I will not leave. And I will not be thrown out," she countered.
Lisa sneered, and the expression made her look very unpleasant.
"I am Curtis’s mother, and I will do whatever is best for my son. Right now, he is in a coma. He needs me to be here for him, to take care of him. He doesn’t need a useless gold digger who is here for everything but his well being," the woman snapped.
Her words settled around Lara, and she exploded.
"FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, I AM NOT A GOLD DIGGER. I AM CURTIS’S WIFE. WE ARE LEGALLY MARRIED FOR FUCK’S SAKE. WHY IS THAT SO HARD FOR YOU TO BELIEVE?" she yelled.
Lisa threw her hands in the air and yelled back at Lara.
"BECAUSE I HATE YOU. I HATE YOUR GUTS AND I THINK YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF MY SON. I HATE YOU SO FUCKING MUCH."
Laura gasped from where she stood, but neither Lara nor Lisa spared Curtis’s sister a glance.
Lara smiled at Lisa’s words.
"You hate me? That’s okay. But you know what? Your feelings towards me don’t matter. Because guess what? Your son loves me. He is head over heels in love with me and would do anything for me. And you know this. So no matter how much you yell in my face, that fact is not going to change. Never."
Lisa’s jaw ticked and she opened her mouth to talk, but Lara wasn’t done yet.
She stepped closer towards Curtis mother and leaned in to whisper into her ears.
"You want me to leave? Fine. I will leave. But when Curtis wakes up and sees you by his side. He will look around for me. And when he doesn’t find me, my husband will ask you where I am. I am sure you already have a well crafted lie ready to tell him, but he will come home. And he will meet me.
Curtis will ask me what happened, Lisa. And I will tell him the truth. How you threw his heavily pregnant wife out of his ward. How you threatened me to stay away. He will listen to me, and that lie you tell him? The lie will fade away. And Curtis will be very very pissed. You are already on his bad side. But when that happens, it will get worse."
Lara leaned back and smiled at Lisa.
"And I am sure you wouldn’t want that to happen," she said sweetly, turned around, and walked out of the hospital room.
