Chapter 525: 233 release to the sea
"Welcome to the morning show of Hui Saka, today most of Yaha Star is sunny, thanks to the Planet Ring’s precise control of the climate, directing the rain clouds to where they need to be..."
Catherine looked at the military communicator in her hands, where a lifelike robot was speaking vividly on the small screen.
"Captain, it’s just a fake identity, what’s worth watching?"
Teasing came from a teammate nearby.
Catherine glared at the speaker, her eyes sharp behind the Golden Mask.
Bryant said gently beside her, "Even though his appearance has changed, he is essentially the same person. What’s really surprising is that he would apply to join the Supermodified people."
On the rare occasion that the teammates gathered to rest, they began to talk:
"The Director said he joined us using this bionic machine, right? It’s just a formality then."
"I still don’t quite understand what the White Ghost really wants. Does he aspire to become one of the Empire’s Great Nobles? Or is he trying to escape his previous predicament to be recognized by the Empire and awarded?"
"Yes, the White Ghost was already at the pinnacle among the transformed people; him voluntarily removing his mask was unexpected."
Bryant squinted and smiled, "That’s why you are not as clever as the White Ghost."
"Are you all just hanging around?"
Catherine frowned, "Meeting summary, prepare for meal, and after eating, return to your respective areas to patrol."
"Yes! Captain!"
"Bryant, you come with me to patrol first, let them have a rest."
"Thanks, Captain!"
Bryant squinted and smiled, hands behind his back, following Catherine as they boarded the same Armored Hover Car and ascended over the city.
Patrolling was usually dull and boring, Bryant used his spiritual power to sense the surroundings while Catherine occupied herself with an e-book.
Catherine opened a few projection screens, carefully observing the city that had just been ravaged by war, glimpsing many refugees among the ruins.
"Bryant, what do you think, is the Empire planning to completely obliterate the Suri Federation or establish a puppet regime?"
"It depends on what the Empire needs," Bryant said slowly, "If it’s about making an example through force, they’ll probably obliterate it, relocating these people to a developing planet on the Empire’s border for enslavement education. If it’s the resources here, then a puppet regime."
"Do you pledge loyalty to the White Ghost now?" Catherine suddenly asked.
Bryant shook his head with a smile, "I only pledge loyalty to myself."
"The higher-ups asked me that," Catherine said, "Hui Saka was new to Yaha Star when we first encountered him, which means we were in contact with the White Ghost from the beginning."
"Captain, during your initial report you omitted the detail that I had controlled you for three days."
Bryant spoke unhurriedly:
"Don’t worry, Captain, I didn’t do anything to you, just kept you anesthetized and asleep, that chip in your head that blocks psychic control was truly troublesome.
"The higher-ups questioned me too, and I answered fully. I didn’t know back then that Hui Saka was the White Ghost, so I didn’t guard against him. I just treated him as a perfect piece of art, planning to categorize him.
"That’s all."
"The death of Number Three Disassembler..."
"Captain," Bryant turned his head towards Catherine, "Since the higher-ups have blurred the details of that matter, we shouldn’t dwell on it. Everybody loves the White Ghost now, ignoring the previous details, and accepting him is correct."
Catherine leaned back in the leather seat, speaking indifferently, "I’m just worried that the White Ghost and you together might create a catastrophe beyond remedy."
"A catastrophe? The White Ghost does not wish to adversarially confront the Empire; he too is a part of the Empire," Bryant said with a smile, "Besides, the organization is now more worried about your relationship with the White Ghost, not mine."
"Me?" Catherine pointed to her nose, hidden behind the mask, "What kind of relationship do I have with the White Ghost?"
"A relationship from dating."
Catherine raised her hand to her forehead, faintly at a loss for words.
That was only a mild flirtation; personal feelings always took a back seat to her work, and her job was to be a sharp blade in the hands of the Empire, she...
Ding Ding!
A prompt sounded from the personal communicator, and Catherine instantly completed the reading of the message.
[Hui (Ghost’s Substitute): I heard from Director Riva that you would be returning for the evaluation?]
[Catherine (Captain): I haven’t received any news.]
[Hui (Ghost’s Substitute): Maybe we could meet up then? I went to great lengths to clear my identity just to have a proper date with you, Captain Catherine.]
[Catherine (Captain): Only a Ghost would believe a ghost’s tale.]
[Hui (Ghost’s Substitute): I swear on my charm, and if you didn’t refuse, that means you have accepted the date invite. Bring some military oil, I need to lubricate my joints. I will prepare a gift for you, how about a dance?]
[Catherine (Captain): Let your real self perform the dance.]
[Hui (Ghost’s Substitute): No problem, a video is still feasible.]
"Psh," Catherine tossed the communicator aside, but soon picked it back up and typed a line of text.
[Catherine (Captain): I’m working, chat during breaks.]
[Hui (Ghost’s Substitute): Work hard, work hard, record several sections at once, then you can skive off for a few more days.]
Catherine scoffed with a laugh, her eyes always carrying a hint of light.
