Abyss Summoner-Chapter 154 - 151: Busy Days
Lu Wei opened his eyes.
His eyes were deeply sunken, gray in color. The long-term lack of nutrition had transformed his appearance somewhat, making him look like he was addicted to drugs, his features severely distorted.
It’s hard to imagine the harrowing experience he had just been through.
Beside Lu Wei was a little girl around ten years old. She appeared somewhat frail, clutching the blanket tightly as if she was trapped in a nightmare of some kind, her nose twitching in a way that made one feel pity.
Lu Wei could never forget the condition they were in when they arrived at [Order]. His sister’s thin little face was covered in dust, her eyelids swollen with dark circles, her tiny hands also scraped in many places, oozing a bit of blood, yet she didn’t cry out in pain or hardship, only trembling with her frail shoulders, steadfastly following him.
"Everything will be fine."
Though the young man was equally haggard, his eyes were exceptionally bright, his tone filled with determination. He believed in miracles, believing in what his parents used to say about human effort.
Lu Wei was just a seventeen-year-old kid in peaceful times, the prime age for schooling, yet now, he was one of the wanderers in this disaster.
The apocalypse was ruthless. During an Insect Race attack, their parents were devoured by insects, while Lu Wei managed to escape with his young sister, living a life of constant drift ever since.
In this predominantly death-gray environment, the siblings’ dependency was the only driving force for survival.
In moments of extreme despair, humans can turn into madmen. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
During their escape, two men even tried to assault his young sister. Lu Wei killed them, first slicing one’s throat with a knife, then deeply stabbing the other’s chest.
Blood stained the young man’s hands red.
Hunger, despair, pain enveloped Lu Wei’s heart. Food was becoming scarcer, more anomalies lurking around, just as he was on the verge of collapse, [Order] appeared beside him.
For Lu Wei, it’s hard to imagine all that’s happened in recent days. Not long ago, they were living hand-to-mouth; now, they lived in warm shelters with food to fill their stomachs. It all seemed unbelievably surreal.
Though the food wasn’t very good and the accommodation just partitioned dormitories, compared to the days engulfed in death and despair, it made him greatly satisfied.
Order has many rules.
No going out after ten at night, avoid drinking raw water when possible, clothes must be washed weekly—rules abound, over ten in total, inevitably making people feel a bit cumbersome.
Yet survivors learned to adhere to these rules within a very short time.
Food was too precious.
For those who couldn’t even eat properly not long ago and witnessed countless suffering and death, these rules were nothing.
They didn’t lack freedom.
The camp didn’t restrict their activity range, of course, except certain special places, like Chen Feng’s residence, and the playground behind the academy.
The playground was a forbidden zone, surrounded by a row of simple walls, though one couldn’t see what was happening inside, Lu Wei often heard strange sounds coming from within.
Skeleton camp.
Skeletons were produced inside, walking around like humans, wandering the camp every day. At first, this terrified Lu Wei, but once familiar, one would find these skeletons had no interaction with humans. Rather than being undead, they were more like robots on an assembly line.
Capture insects, disassemble insects.
In a certain sense, skeletons were one of the city’s Guardians.
Everything about [Order] was established by rules.
There are many types of work.
Rebuilding houses, mending clothes, cooking and odd jobs—the worst, joining the logistics group to clean up daily waste. Though the logistics group’s food was less compared to other jobs, saving a bit would suffice for daily consumption.
In this unfamiliar yet vibrant environment, survivors witnessed many novel yet superior systems.
The environment was changing.
They, too, were undergoing transformation.
For these refugees, it was Chen Feng who bestowed a so-called dignity upon them. In this scenario, Chen Feng’s prestige grew daily; some even took him as a belief, starting to worship sincerely.
Lu Wei was one of them. No matter how ruthless or cold-blooded Chen Feng was, to Lu Wei, it was this ruler who led him out of his miserable life and gave him a chance to restart.
Here, there were many widely known stories about Chen Feng — Summoner, formidable warrior, killer of insects, destroyer of cannibalistic supermarkets. Lu Wei was familiar with each tale. Chen Feng was the backbone of this city, supporting a firmament, sheltering everyone within.
Belief.
Though he had never met him face-to-face, Lu Wei admired this legendary figure to the extreme.
Lu Wei’s job was rebuilding houses.
His task was to carry bricks and lime. Alongside the daily food distributed by the camp, after finishing a day’s work, he could receive two steamed buns occasionally, even a whole egg.
These foods were enough to satisfy him and his sister.
The setting sun indicated the end of the day’s work. Lu Wei took the day’s earnings and headed back home.
He didn’t have to worry about his sister facing danger—assault in the camp was a serious crime; even if one couldn’t control themselves anymore, they would choose to resolve it in a secluded corner, never harming those around them. Besides, patrol officers were everywhere in the camp, holding weapons, patrolling the streets. Any sign of violations would prompt immediate action.
Safety.
Compared to the harsh, chaotic outside, here seemed like a paradise.
A commotion came from the side of the road.
Dozens of people gathered, seemingly discussing something exciting. Discussing so lively, occasionally exclamations burst forth.
Lu Wei frowned slightly; Order strictly prohibited such hubbub. Someone had made it clear when they arrived. Yet now, this group was clearly somewhat carefree—what matter had them so unruly?
With curiosity, Lu Wei stepped forward, parted the crowd, finally seeing the news pinned on the announcement board.
Chen Feng was forming a Personal Guard squad.
Those selected would have the chance to have their family allocated better houses, with food supplies doubled. Most crucially...
Each Personal Guard could receive five pounds of insect meat weekly.
Meat!
Lu Wei’s eyes flickered, utterly captivated by this announcement.
