Chapter 47: Chapter 45: Impostor

The night was deep and silent.

No!

To be precise, it was a night with no one around. The once bustling streets had completely become a ruin, now a paradise for monsters.

Zombies.

Standing before Chen Feng was a zombie. Its skin was deathly pale, like it had been immersed in water for a long time, covered with tumors all over, densely packed, giving an extremely nauseating feeling.

Bronze Level.

Unlike ordinary zombies, this one was brimming with a formidable power. Clearly, it was an evolved zombie.

It was rather strange; the zombie stood there, motionless as if it were looking at something.

Chen Feng turned slightly, glanced forward, and his pupils dilated instantly.

A little girl.

At this moment, a little girl was crouching in front of the zombie. She wore a floral dress, as if she were afraid of the zombie, with her head and arms curled together.

However, she was also facing away from the zombie, her body trembling as if in fright, looking extremely pitiful.

Chen Feng didn’t think much. He rushed forward in a swift stride.

His original intent was to test the power of the Flame Sword. With a zombie right in front, there was no reason to hold back.

Chen Feng’s palm first turned crimson, then a small flame appeared, billowing, and in just a second, it turned into a brilliantly red longsword.

This sword, entirely made of flame, exuded intense heat, making the surrounding air extremely dry, as if water vapor were evaporating. Yet, Chen Feng seemed oblivious, as if he couldn’t feel the fire’s presence.

As if sensing something, the zombie suddenly turned around!

Good heavens!

What a face that was!

Its eyes were gouged out, nose cut off, ears sliced away, with no distinguishable features left on the entire face. It was filled with an ordinary kind of terror.

Unlike bugs and beasts, the types of zombies were more diverse and bizarre.

Sinking Corpses, Iron Armor Corpse Demons, Stalkers, Tongue Monsters, Blood Corpses...

Especially post-evolution, zombies undergo significant changes. Their appearances become stranger and their abilities exceptionally eerie. Like the Exploder, whose bloated appearance houses combustible gas. When threatened or killed, it detonates, comparable in power to five dynamite sticks.

The zombie before him had clearly had its features deliberately disfigured. Would a Bronze Level zombie allow someone to carve up its face?

Or, had it been mutilated, its features cut off when it was human?

Chen Feng’s gaze was cold. Whatever the zombie had experienced was of no concern to him. What he cared about was the power of the sword in his hand.

Stride forward.

Holding the Flame Sword, Chen Feng’s eyes filled with a fearless spirit. There were no fancy moves, just wide and sweeping strikes, aiming directly for the zombie’s neck.

Surviving in the apocalypse.

There’s no need for complicated maneuvers. Whether against humans or beasts, targeting weaknesses yields unexpected results.

Eyes, neck, chest, groin.

Dirty tricks?

In this world now, such words don’t exist. During combat, the goal is to kill the opponent in the fastest, shortest, and most effective manner, which is Chen Feng’s pursuit of combat style.

"Groar..."

The zombie roared, its entire body like a boulder crashing towards Chen Feng, covered in those nauseating lumps, close enough to smell the odor of decay.

The zombie raised its fist, swinging at Chen Feng’s head!

Though it had no eyes, it didn’t hinder the zombie’s actions. Having evolved to Bronze, it had some Perception Ability.

Watching the incoming fist, Chen Feng suddenly grinned, his white teeth resembling some ferocious beast.

He abruptly raised his hand.

"Pssh!"

A piercing sound as Chen Feng’s longsword plunged directly into the zombie’s chest. That wasn’t all. Upon contact, the zombie’s chest turned completely black; its innards were incinerated. If it were human, this alone would have been fatal.

"Groo..."

The zombie seemed unprepared for this, its freedom restricted, it could only emit a whimpering sound.

"Too weak."

Through the longsword, Chen Feng’s gaze turned grim as he swung downward forcefully!

Tear!

The zombie’s chest to lower body split open, spilling its innards onto the ground. How sharp, a simple action cleaved a Bronze Zombie in two.

"The kind of disgusting creatures I hate the most!"

Almost simultaneously, Chen Feng lunged forward, his right hand thrusting the sword toward the zombie’s head!

The zombie hadn’t even reacted when its skull was split open, its head tearing with a pop, blood and brain matter spilling out, staining the ground crimson!

Dead!

This zombie, which reached Bronze, impervious to bullets, died so easily at Chen Feng’s hands. It hadn’t even used many of its abilities.

Like the Awakened, evolved zombies also had a few trump cards. If Chen Feng guessed right, the zombie’s ability related to the lumps on its body. Those lumps, a black-purple color with a foul odor, no doubt contained a potent Poison. In combat, if the zombie detonated some lumps, they would be hard to guard against.

But now...

It didn’t even have the chance to explode; Chen Feng killed it with two strikes.

Bronze against silver, this was never a fair fight.

Chen Feng glanced at the Flame Sword in his hand, a gleam in his eyes. The blessing from the Blazing Demon was even more formidable than he imagined. Cutting through a Bronze Zombie’s body was as easy as slicing butter, truly a deadly weapon.

If sneaking up on a similarly ranked opponent, unless they were a defense-type Awakened, they couldn’t possibly escape unscathed!

Oh!

There’s still one more person.

Clearing his thoughts, Chen Feng remembered the little girl nearby and walked over to her.

A few steps brought Chen Feng in front of the little girl.

The little girl still had her back to Chen Feng, her body trembling, obvious fear still gripping her. Perhaps she heard footsteps behind her and slowly began to turn...

Her skin was white, borderline sickly. As she turned, starting with her jet-black hair, then her forehead, soon her cheeks would be revealed to Chen Feng...

Bang!

Just as the little girl was about to fully turn, Chen Feng kicked straight at her head, sending her staggering, flying backward.

Tear!

That wasn’t all. Chen Feng swung his right hand, severing the little girl’s legs completely. Due to the Flame Sword, the wounds instantly cauterized, blood not even flowing out.

The little girl slumped on the ground in a bizarre position, her legs severed, face down, motionless, as if dead.

Chen Feng’s expression was emotionless.

"Click!"

A crisp sound echoed. The little girl first twisted her neck, then shakily propped herself up with her knees.

She slowly turned around.

No!

To be precise, only her head turned around.

Her body remained facing away from Chen Feng, but her head twisted to face him. Her eyes were devoid of whites, entirely black like tunnels—deep and chilling—and her face already rotting, maggots wriggling visibly at her nose and ears.

How...

How could there be any trace of humanity left?
