Chapter 237 -237: Li Shirui Wants to See the Attending Doctor
“Xiao Fen told me,” Xi Wanlin threw herself in front of Mr. Xu, looking very anxious, as if Mr. Xi had contracted a serious illness, “Dad, where do you feel unwell? Is it just back pain?”
As she finished speaking, tears streamed down her face, causing Li Shirui to feel quite embarrassed; for one, she thought the act was overdone, and secondly, she felt there was no need for such a display between father and daughter.
Mr. Xi felt the same way, always sensing that his eldest daughter’s flattery was a bit too much.
“Dad only has back pain and it’s nothing serious. Staying in the hospital is optional. The reason for the hospitalization is that I’ve not been busy lately, and some work can be dealt with here,” Xi Huarong reassured Xi Wanlin.
Xi Wanlin glanced again at the card above the bed, which listed the attending physician. Although the signature was messy, it was discernible as Su Meixi’s.
“Dad, is the Military District Hospital up to par? Why don’t we go to a better hospital, or transfer now? We can seek treatment in Guang City, or even go to Jing City or Hu City.”
If it were someone like Xi Huarong, international travel wouldn’t be an easy option; otherwise, Xi Wanlin would have suggested her father go abroad for treatment.
Xi Huarong laughed, “It’s just back pain; it will be fine with some treatment in a few days. There’s no need to make a fuss, and besides, why isn’t the Military District Hospital good enough? The doctors here are very capable.”
“I heard from Xiao Fen that the attending physician is her life-saving benefactor, about my age. How could someone so young possess any real medical skills?” Xi Wanlin said with a sneer.
Xi Huarong’s expression darkened.
He thought about the way Su Meixi’s hands felt against his back, her gentle touch, and the calm and careful way she had handled the acupuncture treatment. How could such medical skills be considered subpar?
He scolded his daughter, “Does medical skill have much to do with age? Even if it does, does that mean young doctors should not have the chance to treat patients? If everyone only goes to the older ones, what about the younger doctors?”
Usually, Xi Wanlin maintained a formal relationship with her parents, pretending to be obedient, so they rarely reprimanded her. But unexpectedly, because of Su Meixi, her father put his foot down for the first time.
She felt wronged but had no choice but to agree with her father, “Dad is right, my thinking was too narrow.”
After a while, she asked again, “Mom, have you met Dr. Su yet?”
“No, she’s been busy. I’ll come to meet her during the ward round tomorrow morning.”
…
Xi Wanlin spent another sleepless night, waking up early in the morning.
She sat in the living room, keeping an eye on Li Shirui’s bedroom, wondering what she could do to prevent the meeting between Li Shirui and Su Meixi, like the last time she had fallen down the stairs to intervene.
Li Shirui, needing to go to the hospital early, also woke up very early.
Seeing Xi Wanlin in the living room, she couldn’t help but ask, “Linlin, why are you up so early?”
“Mom…” Xi Wanlin suddenly thought of a plan and immediately smiled, “Mom, aren’t you going to see Dad in the hospital? Let me drive you there.”
“Aren’t you going to work?”
“I’ll go to work after I drop you off.”
“Alright then, I’ll just go prepare some breakfast for your dad.”
She had already told the housekeeper the night before to make breakfast a bit earlier.
While the housekeeper and Li Shirui were occupied with the takeout box, Xi Wanlin quickly went to the garage and siphoned off most of the fuel from the car, leaving just a shallow layer.
By the time Li Shirui came out with the breakfast box, Xi Wanlin was already in the car, calling out to her, “Mom, hurry up and get in.”
Li Shirui got into the car but felt something was off. On closer inspection, she realized that Xi Wanlin hadn’t put on makeup today.
This was unlike her usual style; she’d always meticulously groom herself every day.
Noticing Li Shirui staring, Xi Wanlin felt a twinge of guilt, “Mom, what are you looking at me for?”
“Why didn’t you put on makeup today?”
“Oh, I was just so worried about Dad being in the hospital that I forgot,” replied Xi Wanlin.
Li Shirui was still a bit skeptical.
She felt her daughter had been overdoing it lately.
But she didn’t ask further, instead telling Xi Wanlin to start driving.
However, halfway there, the car came to a halt.
“What’s going on?” Li Shirui asked.
Xi Wanlin glanced at the fuel gauge, then apologized, “Mom, I forgot to refuel yesterday. It’s strange, I clearly remember I already did. How come there’s no fuel?”
Li Shirui clutched the insulated food container, looking gloomily at Xi Wanlin.
Xi Wanlin was not the careless type; it was impossible for her to forget to refuel.
Could she have been preoccupied with something lately? Could it be a tiff with Li Hengze?
She glanced out of the car window. They were in the city center and it was rush hour for work—forget about hailing a cab, even getting on a bus would be impossible.
“What do we do now? Is there time to refuel?” Li Shirui asked.
Xi Wanlin replied, “It’s possible, but we’ll need to have someone deliver the fuel. I’ll call my secretary to bring some over.”
After saying that, Xi Wanlin made the call. The person on the other end said they could deliver, but it would take some time.
Delivering fuel like this was something Li Shirui had never encountered before.
Li Shirui got out of the car and looked around. Just then, an Audi car parked behind them. Seeing this, she walked over elegantly, then asked politely, “Excuse me, do you use 95 octane gasoline?”
The young male driver inside, upon seeing the dignified Li Shirui, sensed she was no threat, and asked, “Auntie, what do you need?”
“It’s like this, our car ran out of fuel and we’re in a hurry to get somewhere. I wonder if it would be possible for you to give us a little? I can pay you double.”
Li Shirui rarely drove and had no idea if it was possible to borrow gasoline.
It turned out that the driver actually had some spare fuel and was willing to sell some to Li Shirui, even kindly filling it up for her.
Xi Wanlin was speechless and just continued driving to the hospital.
The hospital was crowded in the morning, with many cars queued at the entrance. Xi Wanlin, on an impulse she couldn’t explain, suddenly pressed the accelerator and rear-ended the car in front of her.
The driver of the car in front immediately got out, pointing at Xi Wanlin, “How do you drive? How did you manage to hit me when everything was fine?”
Xi Wanlin replied angrily as well, “It’s clearly your fault; how can you blame me? If you hadn’t braked so abruptly, would I have hit you?”
Li Shirui looked at Xi Wanlin, somewhat puzzled.
Her daughter was usually so steady and careful; why was she experiencing so many issues today? Especially being so unreasonable?
Li Shirui got out of the car and walked over to the driver to apologize, “I’m really sorry, my daughter mistook the brake for the gas pedal. Don’t worry, I’ll compensate you. We can settle privately, let me know how much you want.”
Seeing Li Shirui’s good attitude, the driver decided to take advantage of her, “Pay me three thousand.”
“No problem, give me your account number,” Li Shirui said.
Xi Wanlin was not satisfied, “Mom, why are you paying so much? We can call the traffic police and let the insurance handle it.”
Li Shirui looked at her daughter complexly, “With so many cars behind us, what is this blocking them supposed to mean?”
After Li Shirui paid the driver, she went into the hospital carrying the food container.

Xi Wanlin checked the time; it was already 9 a.m. The time for rounds must have already passed.
She hurried to park.
…
Su Meixi was late today.
It was all because of Gu Wei. Last night, when she was washing her hair, she asked him to set the alarm clock. However, he didn’t hear her clearly and thought she asked him to get the bird’s nest from the stew pot. She wondered about it at the moment, but since she was also consuming bird’s nest for health reasons, she didn’t question it further.
When Gu Wei saw she wasn’t up at the usual time in the morning, thinking she was off, he didn’t wake her.
She got up and scolded him, then had him drive her to the hospital entrance, from where she rushed in.
Arriving at the inpatient department, just as the elevator door was about to close, she hurried over.
The elevator doors closed then reopened, revealing a face approaching her sixties but still full of grace.
