Chapter 125: A Night Interrupted

The ride home after dinner was quiet. Ashton had been quieter than usual, and although Evander kept his eyes on the road, Delphinia could tell he was concerned. She watched Ashton through the rearview mirror, her heart aching at the sight of his small figure slouched against the car door.

Once they arrived home, Ashton went straight to his room, muttering a soft "goodnight" as he disappeared down the hallway. Delphinia and Evander exchanged a look before heading to their bedroom.

Delphinia closed the door behind her and sighed, running her fingers through her hair. "Something is definitely bothering him," she said, leaning against the dresser. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Evander popped open a few buttons on his shirt, his gaze locked on her with intensity. "You think so?"

"Of course," Delphinia replied, folding her arms. "Maybe he’s thinking about Lydia again. You should ask him, Evander. Maybe he wants to see her but doesn’t know how to say it..."

Evander stepped closer to her, brushing his hand against her cheek to make her stop rambling. His touch was gentle, and his thumb stroked her skin in slow circles. Delphinia blinked up at him, startled by the sudden tenderness.

"I really like it when you worry about Ashton," he said softly, his deep voice carrying a warmth that sent a flutter through her chest.

"What are you saying?" Delphinia asked, her cheeks warming. "Of course I care about him. He’s my child too."

Evander’s thumb continued its slow circles on her cheek, his dark eyes fixed on hers. There was a softness in his gaze that made Delphinia’s heart stutter.

"That’s one of the things that makes me like you even more," he said quietly, his deep voice carrying a warmth that sent a flutter through Delphinia’s chest.

Delphinia blinked, caught off guard by the tenderness of his words. But she wasn’t about to let him win this moment so easily. Her lips curved into a teasing smile as she tilted her head slightly. "Oh? And how much do you like me, Evander?"

He chuckled, the sound low and rich, as his hand shifted to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. "More than I probably should," he murmured, leaning in just a fraction closer.

Her cheeks warmed, but her teasing tone didn’t falter. "That sounds like a very vague measurement," she quipped. "I might need something a little more specific."

Evander’s grin widened, a playful glint in his eyes. "Specific, huh? Let’s see... enough to get distracted by you in the middle of a serious conversation. Enough to think about you far more often than I should. How’s that for specific?"

Delphinia felt her pulse quicken at the sincerity beneath his playful tone. She arched a brow, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Hmm, I think you’re still holding back."

He leaned closer now, his voice dropping to a near whisper as his gaze locked on hers. "If I told you just how much, Delphinia, I’m afraid you might never let me live it down."

Her breath hitched, and for a moment, her resolve wavered under his intense gaze. But then, she smiled again, her voice soft but steady. "You’re right—I wouldn’t. But that’s a risk I think you should take."

Evander laughed, the sound warm and full, before his expression softened further. "Then maybe I’ll have to show you instead."

Before Delphinia could say anything else, he leaned in, capturing her lips in a soft, tender kiss. Her breath hitched, but she quickly melted into him, her hands finding their way to his chest.

Their lips moved together, the world outside their room fading into nothingness. Evander deepened the kiss, his hand sliding to the small of her back to pull her closer. They broke apart briefly, their breaths mingling as they stared at each other.

"Evander..." Delphinia whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Evander didn’t reply. He kissed her again, this time with more urgency, walking her backward until her back pressed against the door. His hand reached behind her, and with a quiet click, he locked the door.

Delphinia’s eyebrows knitted together as she realized what he was doing. "Evander—"

"Shh," he murmured against her lips, his smirk returning. "No interruptions."

Her words melted away when his lips met hers again, the kiss deepening with passion. Evander’s shirt was the next to go, his toned chest gleaming faintly under the soft bedroom light. He guided her to the bed, his hands firm yet gentle as he lowered her onto the mattress. Delphinia gasped as he leaned over her, his weight pressing her into the soft fabric of the bedspread.

He kissed his way from her lips to her jaw, then down her neck, leaving her skin tingling. Delphinia’s hands roamed over his bare shoulders, her heart pounding as she felt the muscles flex under her touch.

Just as Evander’s lips brushed against her collarbone, a sharp knock at the door shattered the moment.

Evander froze, his lips hovering just above her skin. For a moment, they both stayed still, listening.

The knock came again, louder this time.

"Just ignore it," Evander muttered, his voice low and frustrated. He moved to kiss her again, but the knock persisted.

"Evander..." Delphinia whispered, her voice filled with worry.

"Whoever it is, they’ll go away," he insisted, his lips brushing against hers once more.

"Daddy? Delphinia?" Ashton’s voice called from the other side of the door, small and hesitant.

Delphinia immediately sat up, gently pushing Evander back. "It’s Ashton," she said, her tone laced with concern.

Evander groaned, rubbing his hand down his face. "Of course it is," he muttered under his breath before sitting back on his heels.

Delphinia straightened her dress and climbed off the bed, her heart still racing from the interrupted moment. She opened the door and found Ashton in his pajamas, his little hand curled into a fist. "Hey, Ashton, why aren’t you asleep yet?"

He glanced up at her with wide, uncertain eyes. "Can I... can I sleep with you guys tonight?
