Chapter 144: No Worries

The ride home was quiet, but not uncomfortably so. Delphinia stole glances at Ashton from time to time, trying to read his expression. She had been worried—worried about how he felt after meeting Lydia, worried that he would withdraw into himself, but to her relief, he acted like nothing had changed. He sat behind them, looking out the window, his fingers absentmindedly playing with the hem of his shirt.

Delphinia let out a quiet breath, her fingers resting lightly on her lap as she gazed out the window. Though the meeting had been awkward, it wasn’t anything unexpected. Lydia had been polite—too polite, even—but there was always an underlying tension in her words. Delphinia could feel it, sharp like a knife just waiting to cut through the fragile peace they had managed to maintain.

Still, nothing bad had happened. That was what mattered.

She shifted her gaze back toward Ashton. He looked calm, unaffected even, but he had always been good at hiding his emotions, at keeping things to himself. It was something she had learned over time—just because he wasn’t saying anything didn’t mean he wasn’t feeling something.

But what was he feeling now?

Was he happy to see Lydia? Conflicted? Did he feel torn between them?

Delphinia wished she could ask, but she didn’t want to push him. He had wanted her there, had asked for her to come along, and that had been enough for her.

She leaned back against the seat, forcing herself to relax.

Maybe she was overthinking things.

Things had gone as smoothly as they could have. There had been no fights, no harsh words exchanged. And while the atmosphere had been thick with unspoken emotions, it wasn’t something that couldn’t be worked through.

Yes, it had been awkward. But it was always going to be, wasn’t it?

This wasn’t the kind of situation that could be resolved in one meeting. Relationships weren’t that simple—especially not one as complicated as this.

When they arrived at the Harrington estate, Ashton immediately went upstairs to his room, leaving Delphinia and Evander alone in the living room. The weight of the day still clung to Delphinia, but the warmth of home made it easier to breathe. She turned to Evander, expecting him to say something, and she wasn’t wrong.

"What did she want to talk to you about?" he asked, his voice calm but laced with a hint of tension.

Somehow, Delphinia had expected this. She had known the moment they arrived at home that Evander would want to know. He probably kept quiet earlier because Ashton was around.

She still remembered the sight of him and Ashton waiting outside the car—not inside, but leaning against it, as if the tension in their bodies wouldn’t allow them to sit still. Evander’s face had been particularly telling, his usual composed expression marred by something she rarely saw on him—worry.

Even now, as he stood before her, his posture was relaxed, but his eyes betrayed him. There was a hint of unease lurking beneath the calm facade he wore so well.

Delphinia raised an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Oh? I can see you’re worried."

She hadn’t meant to tease him—well, maybe just a little. But more than that, Delphinia simply wanted to ease the mood, to make Evander feel less on edge. He was always so composed, so in control, yet she could see the tension he tried to hide. She didn’t like seeing him this way.

Evander scoffed, crossing his arms as he leaned against the couch. "Of course, I’m worried. That woman is unpredictable. She could’ve said something to hurt you."

Delphinia tilted her head slightly, her eyes soft. "Don’t worry. She only said things that were to be expected."

Evander’s gaze sharpened. "Like what?"

"That she was jealous of me for being close to Ashton," Delphinia said simply. "And she thanked me for taking care of him."

Evander clicked his tongue. "Well, at least she knows how to say thank you. That’s rare for her."

Delphinia chuckled. "You sound surprised."

"Because I am," he admitted. "Lydia isn’t the type to acknowledge her mistakes. But then again, it’s hard not to when the proof of her neglect is standing right in front of her."

Delphinia exhaled softly. "It’s complicated for her, I think. She wants to fix things, but she doesn’t know how."

"That’s not your problem to solve," Evander said firmly, stepping closer to her. "She’s the one who made the choices that led to this. Not you."

Delphinia looked up at him, meeting his intense gaze. "I know. But I also know that Ashton is still a child who shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of tension. If there’s a way to make things easier for him, I want to do that."

Evander sighed, his fingers brushing against her wrist. "You really are something, aren’t you?"

Delphinia smirked. "I’ll take that as a compliment."

He let out a chuckle, his hands moving to her waist as he pulled her closer. "It was one."

Delphinia rolled her eyes but smiled. "Flirting with me now, are we?"

"Always," he murmured, his lips hovering near her temple before pressing a lingering kiss there. "It’s my duty as your husband."

She laughed softly, her hands resting against his chest. "Then I suppose I should let you fulfill your duty."

Evander smirked. "You should."

They stood there in silence for a moment, wrapped in each other’s presence, before Evander finally pulled back slightly. "Are you sure that’s all Lydia said?"

Delphinia hesitated for just a second, but she quickly masked it with a reassuring smile. "That’s all."

Evander studied her face, his sharp eyes searching for something, but Delphinia held firm. She had decided not to mention Lydia’s parting words—that she could never replace her as Ashton’s mother. There was no point in bringing it up. What good would it do? It was better this way.

As Evander wrapped an arm around her waist, leading her toward the staircase, Delphinia pushed the thought away. Some things were better left unsaid.
