Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 164: Rejection
Evander leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly as he tapped his fingers against the polished surface of his mahogany desk. A sip of his coffee, now lukewarm, did little to shake off the lingering thoughts from the weekend.
It had gone well—better than he expected. Ashton had visited Lydia’s workplace, and despite his initial concerns, everything had gone smoothly. Delphinia had reassured him that Ashton had been comfortable, even entertained, by the experience. Evander had spent most of the night reflecting on it. He should be relieved, and yet, there was an unsettling feeling gnawing at the back of his mind.
His thoughts were interrupted when the door creaked open, and Hugo stepped in, his usual composed expression intact. The man carried a tablet in one hand, already prepared to brief him on the day’s schedule. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"Sir, good morning," Hugo greeted, adjusting his glasses as he approached the desk.
Evander straightened up, rolling his shoulders. "Morning. What’s on the agenda?"
Hugo cleared his throat, standing tall as he held the tablet. "But before that, sir, didn’t you notice something different about me?"
Evander arched a brow, looking at him from head to toe. His gaze moved slowly, analyzing every detail like he was trying to solve a puzzle.
"...Hair?" he guessed.
Hugo shook his head.
Evander leaned back slightly, arms crossed. "New tie?"
Another shake of the head.
Evander exhaled through his nose, squinting now as he observed Hugo with a level of scrutiny that made the man shift slightly. Hugo remained composed but subtly adjusted his glasses with his fingers.
Evander’s gaze immediately landed on them. "Oh. Right. Glasses." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "What, is your eyesight really bad now?"
Hugo adjusted them again, this time with a hint of satisfaction. "No, I just thought I’d try a different style. It looks good on me, doesn’t it?"
Evander tilted his head, as if considering it. "Well... it’s pretty useless."
Hugo blinked. "Excuse me?"
Evander smirked slightly. "I mean, sure, you look smart, but inside? Not so much."
Hugo let out a sharp breath, shaking his head. "How cruel."
Evander shrugged. "I’m just stating the truth." Then, with a pointed look, he added, "Now, can I actually know my agenda for today, or are we going to keep talking about your sudden fashion experiment?"
Hugo huffed, tapping the tablet with practiced ease. "Oh, right, yes. Your schedule—"
Hugo scrolled through his notes. "You have a board meeting at ten, followed by a lunch appointment with Mr. Sterling to discuss the expansion project. After that, a briefing with the legal team regarding the new contracts." He paused briefly, his eyes flickering over something on his screen before continuing. "And a meeting with the PR team at four."
Evander nodded along, his mind already shifting into work mode. "Sounds manageable."
Hugo hesitated then. His lips parted, then pressed together as if debating whether to continue.
Evander frowned at the strange behavior. "What?"
Hugo let out a small sigh before speaking. "Kai Robinson has requested an audience with you."
For a moment, silence hung between them. Then Evander’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening. His grip on the armrest of his chair turned knuckle-white.
"What?" The single word was laced with disbelief and irritation.
Hugo shifted his weight, clearly expecting this reaction. "He was quite persistent," he admitted. "If I had to guess, I’d say it has something to do with the Royal’s. He’s unable to secure it as a wedding venue."
Evander scoffed, the corner of his lip curling up in disdain. "Oh, so the bastard wants to talk his way in?" His voice dripped with sarcasm. "Tch. Not gonna happen."
Hugo merely nodded, as if he had predicted as much. "Shall I send the usual rejection?"
Evander waved a hand dismissively. "Tell him I’m busy for the next few months. Hell, tell him I’m busy for the next few years." He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. His expression hardened. "I don’t want anything to do with that man."
Hugo laguhed before nodded. "Understood." He made a note on his tablet before glancing back up. "I assumed this would be your answer, but I wanted to confirm before sending a response."
Evander exhaled sharply, shaking his head. "You already knew what I’d say, Hugo."
The older man allowed a faint smile. "True. But it never hurts to be thorough."
Evander scoffed before turning his gaze to the window, watching the city below. He could feel the familiar surge of anger bubbling in his chest. Just hearing Kai Robinson’s name was enough to sour his mood.
He loathed that man—despised him for everything he had done to Delphinia. The way he had mistreated her during their marriage, the way he had humiliated and discarded her like she was nothing. Even now, the thought of it made Evander’s blood simmer with rage. Kai had been a selfish, unfaithful bastard, and Evander wanted nothing more than to ensure he stayed as far away from Delphinia as possible.
Hugo cleared his throat, pulling Evander from his thoughts. "Will there be anything else, sir?"
Evander exhaled through his nose before shaking his head. "No. Just make sure that rejection gets sent out as soon as possible."
"Of course." Hugo turned to leave but hesitated near the door. "If I may, sir... do you think he’ll try another approach?"
Evander narrowed his eyes. "Probably. But it won’t matter. He’s not getting what he wants."
Hugo nodded once before stepping out of the office, leaving Evander alone with his thoughts once again.
Evander clenched his jaw, his fingers drumming against the desk. He knew this wouldn’t be the last time he’d hear Kai’s name. The bastard had a way of lingering like a bad stain—one that refused to fade.
His scowl deepened. The last thing he wanted was for Kai Robinson to resurface in their lives. And he would do everything in his power to make sure that if Delphinia ever had to see that man again, it would be on her own terms—not because Kai willed it.
