Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 189: Thank Her
Delphinia sat on the edge of the bed, her delicate fingers brushing through the silky fabric of the blanket on her lap. The faint traces of exhaustion still lingered in her pale complexion, her body still recovering from yesterday’s incident.
Evander stood by the doorway, already dressed in a tailored navy suit. His sharp features were clouded with concern, his dark eyes fixed on Delphinia as if he feared she might faint again at any moment.
"You’re staying home today." His voice was low but firm, leaving no room for arguments.
Delphinia looked up at him, her brown eyes soft with silent understanding. She didn’t protest, simply giving a small nod. "Okay."
Evander’s tense shoulders eased slightly, though the worry in his eyes didn’t waver. He walked over, his fingers brushing gently against her cheek. "I just want you to rest... at least for today."
Delphinia leaned into his touch, her eyelids fluttering shut for a moment. "I will."
He exhaled quietly before placing a lingering kiss on her forehead. Then, without another word, he straightened and turned toward Ashton, who had been standing quietly near the door with his little backpack slung over his shoulders.
"Ready, champ?" Evander asked, trying to inject a lighter tone into his voice.
Ashton nodded, his eyes flickering toward Delphinia. "Why isn’t Delphinia taking me today?"
Evander glanced at Delphinia before crouching down to Ashton’s eye level. His large hand ruffled the boy’s soft hair. "It’s been a while since I dropped you off, don’t you think? I missed it."
It wasn’t entirely a lie—he did miss moments like these. Ashton’s bright smile, the small conversations on the way, the feeling of holding his little hand as they crossed the street. But the truth behind his decision sat heavier in his chest.
Ashton grinned, his small teeth peeking through. "Okay, Daddy."
Evander felt a small flicker of warmth in his chest. He stood up and cast one more glance at Delphinia. "I’ll be back soon."
She nodded with a faint smile, watching them leave. The house felt strangely quiet as the door closed behind them.
The drive to school was peaceful. Ashton chatted about his friends and what they were learning at school, his little voice filling the car. Evander listened, occasionally offering a word or two, but his mind kept drifting back to Delphinia.
When they finally arrived at the school, Evander parked the car and stepped out, walking around to open the door for Ashton. The little boy hopped down, adjusting the straps of his backpack. Evander took his hand, ready to walk him toward the gate.
"Hello, you two."
A feminine voice echoed from behind them.
Evander’s steps halted. His body stiffened, recognizing the voice before even turning around. He slowly turned his head, his dark gaze falling on the figure standing a few feet away. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
Lydia.
She was dressed head-to-toe in black—a wide-brimmed hat casting a shadow over her face, large sunglasses obscuring her eyes. The oversized coat hung loosely on her frame, almost swallowing her whole. Yet despite the attempt to disguise herself, she stood out more than ever, drawing curious glances from nearby parents.
Evander’s jaw clenched, but he said nothing.
"Hi..." Ashton’s small voice broke the silence, his greeting barely above a whisper.
Lydia crouched down, her lips curving into a small smile. "Hey, sweetheart... ready for school?"
Ashton nodded, his little fingers tightening around Evander’s hand.
Lydia’s smile wavered before she straightened, her gaze flickering toward Evander. "Where’s Delphinia?"
Evander’s dark eyes remained cold, his expression unreadable. "It’s my turn to take Ashton to school today. And you?"
Lydia let out a soft chuckle, adjusting her sunglasses. "I see... What am I doing here?" She tilted her head slightly. "Isn’t it obvious? I wanted to see my son off to school too."
Evander’s eyes flicked over her from head to toe—the heavy disguise, the way she shifted on her feet as if nervous of being recognized. He knew she was trying to stay hidden, but ironically, her outfit only made her more noticeable.
"Oh." His voice was flat, offering nothing more.
Lydia crouched down again, brushing Ashton’s hair away from his forehead. Her voice softened, adopting a more motherly tone. "Do your best today, okay? Listen to your teacher... and don’t forget to eat your lunch."
Ashton glanced at her, uncertain. "Okay..."
Evander’s hand reached out, gently ruffling Ashton’s head. "Go on, champ."
Ashton nodded, sparing one last glance at Lydia before turning and walking toward the school building. Both Evander and Lydia stood in silence, watching the little boy disappear through the gates.
"He’s all grown up," Lydia murmured, her voice tinged with something between pride and regret.
"Yeah." Evander’s voice was clipped, eyes still fixed on the school entrance.
He turned on his heel, ready to head back to the car—but before he could take a step, a slender hand reached out and grabbed his wrist.
Evander froze.
The touch sent an immediate wave of revulsion through him. His muscles tensed, and in the next second, he jerked his arm back, breaking free from her grasp.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Lydia’s lips curved into a faint smile, though there was a flicker of something bitter in her expression. "Still hostile toward me, huh?"
Evander’s eyes narrowed, his jaw tightening. "What do you want, Lydia?"
"I just wanted to thank you..." Her voice was soft, almost sweet. "For letting me be a part of Ashton’s life again."
Evander’s dark gaze locked onto hers. The coldness in his eyes could have frozen the sun. "Don’t thank me," he said slowly. "Thank Delphinia. None of this would have happened if it weren’t for her."
Lydia’s smile faltered, her fingers curling into her palm. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The distant chatter of parents and children filled the air around them.
Evander didn’t wait for a response. He turned and walked to his car, the faint click of his shoes against the pavement echoing behind him.
Lydia stood where he left her, watching as the black car pulled away from the curb.
Inside the car, Evander gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles white. His gaze flicked toward his hand—the one she had touched.
Disgust curled in his chest.
He clenched his fist and rubbed his palm against his thigh as if trying to rid himself of the sensation.
Lydia’s touch lingered—like a stain he couldn’t wash away.
