Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 191: A Mother’s Care
The house was wrapped in silence, the kind that only came when no one else was around. Delphinia sat curled up on the living room couch, a light blanket draped over her legs. The soft rays of the afternoon sun filtered through the sheer curtains. A half-read book rested on her lap, but her eyes hadn’t moved across the pages in quite some time.
Evander had insisted she rest for the day—no errands, no chores, not even picking Ashton up from school. He had already arranged for Elaine to bring him home, leaving Delphinia with nothing to do but simply stay put. At first, she wanted to refuse, not wanting to trouble Elaine. But when Evander calmly said, "What’s so wrong with a grandmother picking up her own grandson?"
She had no choice but to fall silent.
The quiet around her should have felt peaceful, but instead, it left her feeling strangely out of place. Her hands fidgeted on the blanket, eyes glancing at the clock every now and then. Time seemed to stretch endlessly. The house without Ashton’s laughter or Evander’s steady presence felt far too empty.
It wasn’t long before the faint sound of a car door closing outside broke the stillness. Delphinia’s heart gave a small leap, and she quickly set the book aside. Moments later, the front door clicked open.
"Delphinia!" Ashton’s voice rang out brightly, followed by the hurried patter of small feet.
Delphinia pushed herself up from the couch just in time to see Ashton dash toward her. His little arms wrapped around her waist in a tight hug.
"You’re home," she whispered, her arms coming around him, pressing him close. The familiar warmth of his small body against hers filled her chest with relief.
"I missed you," Ashton mumbled against her stomach, squeezing her tighter.
A tender smile curved on Delphinia’s lips. She smoothed his messy hair and placed a soft kiss on top of his head.
"I missed you too, sweetheart."
The sound of heels clicking softly against the marble floor followed behind him. Delphinia lifted her gaze to see Elaine standing by the door, her warm brown eyes fixed on the two of them with a gentle smile. She was dressed elegantly as always, a silk blouse tucked into perfectly tailored pants, her pearl earrings catching the sunlight.
"Thank you for picking him up, Elaine," Delphinia said softly, brushing a few strands of Ashton’s hair out of his face.
Elaine walked further into the room, her arms folding across her chest. There was something tender in her gaze, but a flicker of worry lingered behind it.
"I heard what happened yesterday," Elaine said, her voice calm yet careful.
Delphinia’s heart sank. She hadn’t expected Evander to tell anyone, least of all his mother. Her fingers instinctively curled around the hem of her shirt, guilt creeping up her chest.
"I’m fine," she quickly assured. "It wasn’t anything serious."
Elaine’s eyes softened, but there was no missing the concern etched on her face. Slowly, she closed the distance between them. Without warning, she wrapped her arms around Delphinia, pulling her into a gentle embrace.
Delphinia’s breath caught. For a moment, she stood still—surprised by the sudden gesture—before her body slowly melted into the hug. Her hands gripped the back of Elaine’s blouse, her heart fluttering in her chest.
"You scared us," Elaine murmured softly. "You’ve been pushing yourself too hard lately."
Delphinia swallowed the lump rising in her throat. The warmth of Elaine’s embrace felt so foreign—yet so achingly familiar. It had been years since anyone had held her like this—with such gentle care, like a mother would.
"I... I didn’t mean to," Delphinia whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "It’s not because of the party. You didn’t put any pressure on me... please don’t think that."
Elaine pulled back slightly, her hands resting on Delphinia’s arms. Her brow furrowed, searching Delphinia’s face.
"Still," Elaine said softly, "I’m sorry if I added to your burden in any way."
Delphinia’s eyes widened, panic flickering in them.
"No, please—don’t apologize," she said, shaking her head. Her voice trembled slightly. "You’ve done nothing but treat me with kindness... I promise you, what happened won’t happen again."
Elaine’s gaze held hers for a long moment, as if trying to gauge the truth behind her words. Then, with a small smile, she reached out and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind Delphinia’s ear.
"It better not," she said softly. "I don’t want to see my daughter fainting again."
Delphinia’s heart clenched at those words—my daughter.
Her throat tightened, and she quickly blinked back the sudden sting in her eyes. For so long, she had walked through life without knowing what it felt like to have a mother’s love—not since her own mother passed away. But now, standing here with Elaine’s warm hands on her shoulders, she felt something she hadn’t realized she had been missing for so long.
She swallowed hard, trying to steady the sudden rush of emotions swelling inside her.
"I’ll be careful," she promised, her voice barely above a whisper.
Elaine’s smile softened, her fingers squeezing gently against Delphinia’s arms. "Good."
A small silence settled between them. Ashton’s distant voice echoed from upstairs as he played in his room. Delphinia glanced away for a moment, biting her lower lip to stop the tremble. The warmth of Elaine’s touch lingered on her skin, leaving behind something fragile... something she hadn’t dared to hope for.
Care.
Love.
A mother’s care.
She had never thought she would find it again—not in this lifetime.
Elaine gave her arms one last gentle squeeze before letting go. She smoothed down her blouse and took a small step back, her usual composed smile returning.
"Now, how about I make us some tea?" she offered lightly, as if nothing had just happened. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
Delphinia’s heart ached—not out of sadness, but from the overwhelming warmth that wrapped around her chest. She quickly nodded, forcing back the lump rising in her throat.
"That would be lovely," she whispered.
Elaine gave her a knowing smile before heading toward the kitchen.
Left alone in the living room, Delphinia slowly sat back down on the couch. Her hands pressed lightly against her chest, feeling the steady thrum of her heart beneath her palms.
A small, wobbly smile broke across her lips.
It’s really good... to have a mother who cares.
