Chapter 221: A Warm Welcome and Unexpected Calls

The ride home had been peaceful, but the real surprise awaited them when Evander and Delphinia stepped into their house. The warm glow of the living room lights was still on, and there, curled up on the couch with his eyelids drooping heavily, was Ashton. The little boy looked as though he had fought a hard battle against sleep and barely managed to keep his head up.

Evander exchanged a glance with Delphinia before they both walked over to him.

"Ashton?" Delphinia knelt beside him, brushing his tousled hair away from his face. "Why are you still awake, sweetheart? It’s way past your bedtime."

Ashton rubbed his sleepy eyes and yawned widely before blinking up at them. "I wanted to wait for you. I didn’t get to say goodnight earlier. And..." He turned his gaze to Delphinia’s stomach and placed a tiny hand there. "I wanted to say goodnight to my new sibling too."

Delphinia’s heart swelled at the sweet gesture, and she smiled tenderly, placing her hand over his. "That’s very thoughtful of you, Ash. Your sibling is lucky to have an older brother like you."

Evander chuckled, scooping the boy up effortlessly in his arms. "Alright, little man, let’s get you to bed before you fall asleep right here on the couch."

Ashton nodded sleepily, resting his head against Evander’s shoulder as they walked up the stairs to his bedroom. Once they reached his bed, Evander gently laid him down while Delphinia pulled the covers over him. Ashton’s drowsy eyes flickered open just a little, and he reached for Delphinia’s hand.

"Goodnight, Delphinia. Goodnight, Dad," he murmured before his small hand moved to rest on her stomach once more. "Goodnight, little brother or sister. I can’t wait to meet you."

Delphinia felt her throat tighten with emotion as she kissed Ashton’s forehead. "Goodnight, Ashton. Sweet dreams."

Evander ruffled his son’s hair before standing up. "Sleep well, champ."

With that, Ashton let out a soft sigh, finally giving in to exhaustion. Evander and Delphinia quietly left his room, closing the door behind them, their hearts warm from the unexpected moment.

As they walked to their room, Delphinia let out a soft sigh, a warm smile playing on her lips. "Ashton is really sweet," she murmured, glancing up at Evander. "He’s such a good kid."

Evander smirked, clearly pleased with the statement. "Of course he is. Just look at who he takes after," he said, flashing her a proud smile.

Delphinia chuckled, shaking her head. "Oh? And who would that be?" she teased, though she already knew the answer.

Evander placed a hand over his chest dramatically. "Well, obviously, his incredibly charming and intelligent father."

Delphinia rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the amused smile on her face. "Mmm, yes. Because being humble is one of your greatest traits."

"Absolutely," Evander replied smoothly, his lips twitching. "But, to be fair, he’s got his mother’s kindness too. You saw how he hugged you tonight, right?"

Delphinia hummed in agreement, her fingers idly brushing against the fabric of Evander’s sleeve as they walked side by side. "Right. So, that makes him a combination of both of us," she mused, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "The best traits of his father and his mother."

She turned to him, her eyes filled with warmth, and without another word, she leaned up and pressed a light kiss to his cheek.

The next morning, the peaceful silence of the bedroom was broken by the sharp ringing of Evander’s phone. He groaned, blindly reaching for it on the nightstand while Delphinia, still half-asleep, buried her face into the pillow.

"What...?" Evander muttered groggily as he answered the call. His voice was hoarse from sleep. "This better be important."

Delphinia barely registered his conversation, only hearing his occasional grumbles and unimpressed responses before the call ended. Just as Evander exhaled and shifted to pull her back into his embrace, the phone rang again.

Evander cursed under his breath before answering once more. "What now?" His tone was less patient this time, and Delphinia could hear the low, amused voice of the person on the other end.

By the time the second call ended, Delphinia knew sleep was impossible. She turned over, her voice laced with curiosity. "Who was it?"

Evander ran a hand through his tousled hair and sighed. "Just my friends. Apparently, they saw the news about us attending Kai and Adalaine’s wedding and found out about our marriage from there. Now, they want to meet you."

Delphinia stretched, rolling onto her side to face him properly. "Well, that makes sense. Of course, they’d want to meet me. They must be curious. And I’m sure the news spread like wildfire. I can imagine reporters just dying to write about us."

Evander smirked, brushing his fingers against her cheek. "Yeah. Seems like our marriage is their new favorite topic."

She chuckled softly. "Why don’t we invite them over this weekend?"

Evander raised a brow. "Are you sure? You don’t have to meet them if you don’t want to."

Delphinia laughed. "Oh, come on. Are they dangerous or something?"

Evander tilted his head in mock thought before answering, "Yeah. Probably."

Delphinia rolled her eyes playfully. "I’ll take my chances. Besides, it’ll clear up their curiosity and stop them from pestering you."

Evander sighed in mock defeat. "That’s a good point. Alright, I’ll invite them."

She rested her head against his chest and then thought of something. "How about I invite Valerie too?"

He ran a hand down her back, his voice warm. "That’s a good idea."

Delphinia smiled to herself, feeling more at ease. She wanted this gathering to feel balanced, to have at least one friend of her own there. It would make things feel less overwhelming.

As she snuggled closer to Evander, she couldn’t help but think about how much had changed in her life. A few months ago, she would have never imagined waking up in the arms of a man who loved her so completely, planning a gathering with his friends as his wife. Life had taken unexpected turns, but she had finally found happiness.

She closed her eyes, already anticipating the weekend ahead. It was going to be interesting, to say the least.
