Chapter 232: Buried Truths

The soft chime of porcelain cups meeting their saucers filled the air, blending with the gentle hum of conversation in the lavish sitting room. Delphinia sat across from Elaine, sipping her tea as she listened to the older woman recount a humorous story about Evander and his friends. The past few weeks had brought them closer, and Delphinia had come to appreciate the warmth Elaine freely offered.

"So?" Elaine prompted with a teasing glint in her eyes. "What do you think of Evander’s friends? Did they pass your test?"

Delphinia chuckled, setting her teacup down. "They were... interesting."

Elaine laughed. "Interesting? That’s a very polite way of saying they’re a handful."

"I didn’t want to be rude," Delphinia admitted with a small smile. "But yes, they certainly are a lively bunch. I can see why Evander enjoys their company."

Elaine nodded approvingly before a serious expression crossed her face. She stirred her tea absentmindedly, her gaze lowering. "You know... your mother should be here, too," she murmured, her voice tinged with sadness. "She would have loved to see you happy like this."

Delphinia’s smile faded slightly. She had thought the same thing countless times. "Yeah," she said softly, "I wish she was here, too."

The image of her mother at the table, smiling warmly at her, flickered in Delphinia’s mind. But she was all gone now—lost to time, lost to the cruel hand of fate. Her mother had passed away long before this Chapter of her life had begun, long before Delphinia had found herself here, with a husband and a new life ahead of her.

But even though the pain of losing her mother never truly faded, Delphinia couldn’t help but smile softly to herself, a bittersweet warmth filling her heart. She would have loved it here, she thought. She would have loved to meet Evander and Ashton, and to see how far I’ve come. She’d be so proud, I think. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Elaine exhaled, her fingers tightening around her cup. "If not for that snake Helena, she would be."

Delphinia blinked. "What do you mean?" she asked, tilting her head slightly, her voice cautious.

Elaine suddenly looked nervous, as if she had revealed something she wasn’t supposed to. She hesitated, her eyes flickering to Delphinia before she let out a quiet sigh. "I shouldn’t have said that," she muttered, shaking her head.

Delphinia leaned forward. "Elaine," she said firmly, "please tell me. What do you mean?"

Elaine hesitated a moment longer before finally relenting. "Helena used to be your father’s secretary," she admitted, her voice laced with disgust. "They had an affair."

Delphinia felt her body stiffen. "An affair?"

Elaine nodded. "Your mother found out. She was already fragile, you know that. But the betrayal, the stress... it took a toll on her. Her health deteriorated even further." She paused before continuing in a softer tone. "And she was pregnant with you at the time."

Delphinia felt the air leave her lungs. "What?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Your mother fought so hard to bring you into this world," Elaine continued, her own voice thick with emotion. "She loved you, Delphinia. She wanted you. But the strain was too much. And then... she was gone."

Delphinia sat frozen, the weight of Elaine’s words pressing down on her. She had spent her whole life believing that she was the reason her mother had died. Her father had told her that, reminded her of it every chance he got. And yet, here was the truth—a truth he had kept from her.

Her hands clenched into fists on her lap.

"That bastard," she whispered, her jaw tightening.

Elaine reached out hesitantly. "Delphinia... I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have—"

"No," Delphinia cut in, shaking her head. "Don’t apologize. I’m glad you told me."

Elaine sighed. "Your father was a fool. Cheating on your mother with someone like Helena? It was a downgrade in every possible way." Her lips curled in disdain. "What love? If he truly loved your mother, he wouldn’t have cheated in the first place, no matter how cunning Helena was."

Delphinia felt her throat tighten. Her entire life, she had carried the burden of guilt, believing herself to be the cause of her mother’s death. But the real culprit had been living his life without remorse, letting her suffer under the weight of his lie.

She had always known that her father wasn’t perfect—no one was.

But cheating? The idea felt so foreign to her. She had always seen him as a man of principle.

But that image of him was shattered now, and in its place was something darker. A man who had betrayed her mother, shattered their family.

How could he choose someone like Helena over Mom? The question kept circling in her mind, one that she couldn’t seem to answer.

She abruptly stood up, causing Elaine to look at her in alarm. "Delphinia?"

Delphinia didn’t respond. Her heart pounded in her chest as she strode toward the door, her mind clouded with fury and determination.

"Delphinia, where are you going?" Elaine called after her, but she didn’t stop.

"Mr. Andrews!" Delphinia’s voice rang out as she reached the front of the house, her heels clicking against the marble floor.

The driver appeared instantly. "Yes, ma’am?"

"Get the car ready. Now."

He hesitated, glancing toward Elaine, who had rushed to the doorway. "Where shall I take you, ma’am?"

Delphinia’s expression was cold and unwavering. "To the Harrington estate."

Elaine gasped. "Delphinia, wait! Don’t do anything reckless!"

But Delphinia ignored her. She climbed into the back seat, her grip tightening on her purse as she stared straight ahead.

"Drive."

Mr. Andrews nodded and pulled away from the estate, the car rolling down the long driveway.

Delphinia sat in silence, her emotions churning violently within her.

Her father had lied to her.

He had made her believe she was responsible for something that was his own fault.

And now, she was going to confront him.

No more lies.

No more guilt.

It was time for the truth to be laid bare.
