Chapter 235: Warm Embrace

The ride back home was silent. Delphinia stared out the window, her fingers absently rubbing at her temple, as though trying to physically soothe the storm raging inside her. Evander sat beside her, his presence steady and reassuring, but he didn’t speak. He didn’t ask questions. And for that, she was grateful.

She knew Elaine had likely called him in a panic, fearing where she had gone and what she had done. And judging by the way Evander had been waiting outside the Harrington estate, she could guess that he had anticipated this outcome. He knew her too well.

When they finally arrived home, the car had barely come to a full stop before Delphinia spotted Elaine pacing in the front yard, her arms crossed, a worried expression marring her usually calm face. She was walking back and forth, glancing toward the driveway every few seconds, looking utterly restless.

The moment the car door opened and Delphinia stepped out, Elaine rushed toward her. Relief flashed across her face, followed closely by frustration.

"Why on earth did you bolt off like that?" Elaine scolded, her hands moving to grip Delphinia’s arms lightly, her gaze sweeping over her as though checking for any injuries. "You really went to your father’s house, didn’t you?"

Delphinia let out a small sigh, lowering her gaze. "Yeah. I did. And I’m sorry for making you worry."

Elaine narrowed her eyes at her, as if debating whether she should continue reprimanding her. But then, her lips pursed, and she said something that caught Delphinia off guard.

"You should have taken me with you!" Elaine declared, throwing her hands into the air. "We could have knocked some sense into Robert together! Or better yet, we could’ve both given Helena a proper beating."

For a moment, Delphinia just blinked at her. And then, laughter bubbled up in her throat, escaping before she could stop it. It wasn’t forced or hollow—it was genuine, a much-needed break from the emotional weight she had been carrying all day.

She hadn’t expected that kind of response at all. She’d assumed that after everything that had happened, she’d be met with a scolding. She’d prepared herself for lectures about being reckless, for having confronted Robert without considering the consequences, for not thinking things through. But instead, Elaine had responded with laughter, a spark of humor that almost felt like a weight lifting off Delphinia’s chest.

Elaine huffed, clearly still annoyed, but her lips twitched slightly as if pleased that she had managed to make Delphinia laugh. "I’m serious, you know," she muttered. "That woman is long overdue for a reality check."

"I know," Delphinia replied, shaking her head with amusement. "I’ll keep that in mind for next time."

Elaine clicked her tongue. "There better not be a next time."

Right.

She didn’t want to face them again. She didn’t want to be in that house again, standing across from her father, who had done so much damage. And most of all, she didn’t want to feel that raw, reckless impulse ever again. The kind that had pushed her to confront them, without thinking, without any real plan in place.

No more.

There would be no more meetings with Robert and Helena. She could feel the bitterness creeping up again, the urge to ask why they had done it, to scream at them for the years of lies. But she had done that already, hadn’t she? And nothing had changed.

With one last glance at Delphinia, she exhaled, as if deciding to let the matter go. "Alright. I should go home before I decide to drag you back to that house myself," she said before turning toward Evander. "Take care of her, okay?"

Evander gave a small nod. "Always."

With that, Elaine gave Delphinia one final pat on the shoulder before heading toward her car. As soon as she was gone, the lingering air of tension dissolved, but Delphinia could still feel the exhaustion settling into her bones.

She barely took a step toward the house before Ashton came running down the hallway, his small footsteps hurried and eager. He stopped just in front of her, his big, round eyes filled with concern.

"Delphinia?" he asked softly. "Are you okay?"

Delphinia’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands, which had been hanging limply at her sides, instinctively reached for him, brushing his dark curls gently.

"Yes, sweetheart," she reassured him, her voice softer than before. "I’m fine."

Ashton’s small hands reached up, his little fingers curling around her wrist in a soft grip. He looked up at her with such an earnest expression that for a moment, Delphinia felt her heart tighten.

He must really sense that something’s wrong.

Ashton didn’t seem fully convinced, his lips pressing into a small pout before he suddenly threw his arms around her waist, hugging her tightly. The warmth of his small body against hers was grounding, steadying the tremor in her heart.

Without hesitation, Delphinia bent down, wrapping her arms around him in return. The simple act of holding him close was enough to make some of the tightness in her chest ease.

And then, before she could pull away, she felt another presence behind her. Strong arms encircled them both, pulling her and Ashton into a firm, protective embrace.

Evander.

Delphinia’s breath hitched as she felt the warmth of his body pressed against hers, the solid weight of him anchoring her in place. He said nothing, simply resting his chin lightly atop her head as he held them both, his presence unwavering, steady—safe.

For a moment, Delphinia closed her eyes, allowing herself to melt into the embrace. It felt like a shield against the chaos of the world outside, a barrier that nothing could break through.

As she stood there, wrapped in the arms of the two people who meant the most to her, a thought crossed her mind.

Everything would pass.

She was strong. And this? This was nothing.

With that, she allowed herself to relax, feeling—just for a little while—that she was exactly where she needed to be.
